Xiangyang High School, Class One.
The first day of school.
As a transfer student, I successfully entered this prestigious high school.
I am not very good at math; in fact, I can say I know nothing about it.
So when the teacher assigned a bunch of math problems for us to solve, I was dumbfounded.
I stared at the math test paper in front of me, unable to utter a single word.
Just when I didn't know what to do, a pleasant voice rang in my ear.
"I'll teach you."
I looked up and met the beautiful peach blossom eyes of my deskmate, Gaoyuan.
Gaoyuan had a faint smile on his lips as he leaned closer and quietly asked me, "Which problem don't you understand?"
"This one." I pointed to the second-to-last question on the test paper.
Gaoyuan glanced at it and then picked up a pen, quickly writing on my draft paper.
As he wrote, he explained to me, "Actually, this problem is very simple; it just has a different format. You just need to think of it this way..."
His voice had a soothing quality that gradually calmed my previously anxious heart.
I focused intently on the draft paper, listening to his explanations one by one, and my eyes began to light up little by little.
"So that's how it is," I said in realization as I looked at him.
The surrounding students noticed how close Gaoyuan and I were and began to whisper among themselves.
"Look, that transfer student is really close to Gaoyuan."
"Could they be a couple?"
"Maybe; they look good together."
Listening to their discussions, my face turned red. I secretly glanced at Gaoyuan and noticed that his ears were a bit red too.
The bus stopped at Xiangyang No. 1 Middle School. I got off and walked to the station, looking around. My aunt said she would wait for me at the station, but where was she? Time passed slowly. I checked my phone; it was already six-thirty. My aunt had not shown up. I pouted in frustration, just about to leave on my own when a girl around my age appeared in front of me.
"You must be Li Wan," she said after glancing at me. "My mom has something to do, so she asked me to take you to your new home." The girl was quite pretty, with a small face and big eyes, tall in stature, but her expression seemed a bit impatient.
She grabbed my suitcase and led me to the third floor of a small building. "This is the house I used to live in; my mom said you can stay here," she said as she took out a key and unlocked the door.
She pushed the door open and stood at the entrance, speaking in a flat tone, "Come in." I followed her inside. The house looked quite spacious, very clean, with furniture neatly arranged.
"Your room is over there," the girl pointed to a room at the end of the hallway. I nodded and dragged my suitcase over.
When I opened the door, I found the room simply decorated with a bed, a desk, a chair, and a wardrobe. On the desk were photos of my parents. They looked young and happy in the pictures, but I had no memory of them. After spending some time in the room, I stepped back outside.
The living room was empty, and I could hear the sound of running water from the kitchen. I walked to the kitchen door and saw a girl washing cups.
"Do you need help?" I asked.
She glanced at me and shook her head. "No, you can just go watch TV."
She seemed to dislike me a bit. Feeling a little awkward, I decided to go back to my room and pulled out my phone to scroll through the news.
At that moment, a message popped up in the WeChat group. It was from Xin Hua's class group. Xin Hua was a good friend from my previous school, and she was the one who was most reluctant to see me go when I transferred.
Wang Hua: "Li Wan, you just left like that, and I'm so sad."
Several classmates chimed in below.
"Yeah, Li Wan, our class will be much less fun without you."
"Li Wan, do you remember the dress you wore at the last art festival? You looked amazing in that dress!"
This message was followed by several laughing emojis.
I felt a bit embarrassed and replied, "Stop joking with me."
"I'm not joking; you really are beautiful."
"Exactly, you looked stunning in that dress."
"Li Wan, when will you wear it again for us to see?"
