The production team's bus jolted along the bumpy dirt road, heading toward an unknown filming location.
"This road is impossible to drive on. The production team must be doing this on purpose," complained Li Xue from the back seat, as she pretended to be elegant while fiddling with her meticulously done nails, her eyes darting around nervously.
Chen Xue, sitting next to her, chimed in, "Exactly! There’s no signal here; what are we going to do if our phones die?" She shot a sideways glance at Lin Lu in the front row, her gaze carrying a hint of barely concealed hostility.
Lin Lu seemed oblivious to Chen Xue's look, staring out at the desolate scenery outside, lost in thought.
Suddenly, the bus lurched violently, shaking fiercely as passengers gasped in alarm.
"What’s happening?"
"Did we get a flat tire?"
"Driver, pull over quickly!"
The driver’s face turned pale as he gripped the steering wheel tightly, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as he struggled to maintain control. After a tense moment, the bus finally came to a shaky stop by the roadside.
"I'm really sorry, everyone. It seems there’s been some kind of malfunction with the bus. We need to contact the production team to send another vehicle," the driver said, his voice trembling.
The cabin erupted into chaos as everyone began to complain.
"What? How long are we going to have to wait?"
"We're out in the middle of nowhere with no signal; how can we contact anyone?"
"The production team is so unreliable!"
Lin Lu furrowed her brows as she opened her phone, and indeed, there was no signal.
"Everyone, don't panic. Let's assess the situation first," Lin Lu said as she stood up, her tone calm and composed.
She walked over to the driver to inquire about the situation.
"It seems the brakes have failed, and this road is too remote; there's no phone signal," the driver said, sounding dejected.
Lin Lu nodded in understanding.
Having grown up on an island, she was no stranger to such emergencies.
"Everyone, please stay calm. I'll go ahead and check the situation," Lin Lu said before opening the car door and stepping out.
Yan Liming watched Lin Lu's retreating figure with a hint of concern in his eyes. He was about to get up when he felt Lin Xuemin's hand press down on his shoulder.
"I'll go take a look. You stay here with everyone," Lin Xuemin said before also standing up and following her out.
Lin Lu walked along the rugged mountain path, observing her surroundings.
Dense woods lined the roadside, and in the distance, she could faintly see the rolling peaks.
She took out a compass and a map from her backpack, carefully determining her direction.
At that moment, Lin Xuemin caught up with her.
"Xiaolu, how's it going?"
"Brother, you're just in time. Help me look for a water source and a place to set up a temporary shelter nearby."
"Okay." Lin Xuemin nodded, and the two of them walked deeper into the woods.
"Brother, look!" Lin Lu pointed to a depression at the base of a nearby cliff. "It looks like it could provide shelter from the rain."
"Let's go check it out." Lin Xuemin quickened his pace to catch up.
They passed through a patch of low bushes and arrived at the base of the cliff.
"This place is good, sheltered from the wind and sunny, plus it's spacious enough to accommodate everyone," Lin Xuemin said as he looked around, nodding in satisfaction.
The depression at the base of the cliff was about ten square meters, with a relatively flat and dry ground. The overhanging rock wall provided natural cover, making it an ideal temporary shelter.
"Brother, let's split up," Lin Lu said as she took an Entrenching Tool from her backpack. "You go chop some branches nearby to build a simple shelter while I check over there for a water source."
"Alright, be careful." Lin Xuemin took the Entrenching Tool and turned to walk into the woods.
Lin Lu walked along the base of the cliff to one side. After a short distance, she heard the sound of trickling water.
Excitedly, Lin Lu took out her water bottle from her backpack and filled it with cool spring water.
"With a water source and shelter, we can manage for a while," Lin Lu thought to herself as she turned to head back.
As the sun set in the west, the sky gradually darkened.
In the clearing at the foot of the mountain, a simple shelter had been constructed, covered with thick branches and leaves to shield against wind and rain. Beside the shelter, a bonfire blazed brightly, its light illuminating the tired yet hopeful faces of those gathered around.
Lin Lu sat next to the fire, poking at it with a stick, the flames dancing and reflecting on her calm profile.
"Xiaolu, you are amazing!" Li Xue exclaimed, sitting beside her with admiration in her eyes. "If it weren't for you, we would probably be sleeping out in the wilderness tonight."
"That's right, Xiaolu, you're truly our lifesaver!" another female guest chimed in.
Lin Lu smiled lightly. "It's nothing; I just did what I was supposed to do."
"You’re too modest," Chen Xue said with a half-smile. "If your brother wasn't Lin Xuemin, would you have been able to find water and shelter so quickly?"
Lin Lu turned to Chen Xue, her gaze steady. "Even without my brother, I could have done it just the same."
Chen Xue opened her mouth to respond but was interrupted by Li Xue. "Alright, alright, since we rarely get together like this, let's not talk about that."
"Xiaolu, are you tired? Do you want to rest for a bit?" Yan Liming asked with concern.
"I'm fine; you should rest first," Lin Lu replied, shaking her head as she continued tending to the fire.
Yan Liming wanted to say something more but ultimately remained silent, simply sitting there quietly with his gaze fixed on Lin Lu.
