Seeing my expression was off, Xu Ziheng asked me, "What's wrong?"
Ms.Xue also looked over.
"I need to go home for a bit." My heart felt heavy as I tightly gripped my phone. "It seems my dad is in trouble."
"What happened?"
I shook my head, unable to explain clearly.
Noticing my serious expression, Xu Ziheng didn't press further. After a moment of thought, he said, "Then I'll go with you."
I opened the ride-hailing app.
Since it was early morning, there weren't many cars nearby.
The fastest driver would take at least three kilometers to reach me.
While waiting for the car, Xu Ziheng leaned in to look at the photo and the message.
"Are you sure this is your neighborhood?"
"There's no way I could be mistaken."
I remembered clearly the sign at the entrance, the lit security booth, and the flowerbed on the left side of the gate.
"But if they kidnapped your father, why would they take him to your place? If it’s a threat, wouldn’t it be more intimidating to take him somewhere you can't find?"
I shook my head.
I kept staring at that photo.
My mind was in chaos.
I couldn't figure out the other person's intentions at all.
At that moment, the car finally arrived.
The taxi stopped by the roadside with its hazard lights on. The driver rolled down the window and asked, "3723?"
"That's right."
Xu Ziheng was quick on his feet and had already taken a seat in the front passenger seat.
I instinctively opened the back door and said to Ms.Xue, "You go ahead."
But she didn't get in; instead, she looked at me with a complicated expression.
It was the driver in the front seat who stared intently at the rearview mirror and nervously asked, "Uh... big brother, who are you talking to?"
I froze for a moment, realizing that Ms.Xue was a ghost and not everyone could see her.
Fortunately, Xu Ziheng reacted quickly, jumping out of the co-driver seat and sitting back in the rear seat.
Then he pretended to complain, saying, "Cough, you're really something. You get upset after being apart for a bit. Should I sit in the back with you?"
"Oh, okay," I responded belatedly.
Seeing this, the driver finally relaxed.
"Oh, you were... throwing a tantrum? You scared me! In the middle of the night, I thought it was haunted or something. What if there really is someone I can't see?"
"Don't worry, driver. We live in a society governed by law; there's no such thing as ghosts," Xu Ziheng explained with a smile.
I quickly got into the car.
Outside, the little girl flashed her figure and sat down in the Co-Driver Seat without needing to open the door.
The car started.
However, the atmosphere inside was particularly awkward.
The driver was completely unaware of the Evil Spirit sitting beside him.
From the Rearview Mirror, he glanced at me and Xu Ziheng several times, saying, "It's fine, young man. You can do whatever you want; I don't discriminate against you."
Xu Ziheng and I exchanged a glance, not quite understanding what he meant.
I could only respond casually, "Thank you."
The driver smiled and added, "Love is love, regardless of gender. There's nothing to be ashamed of."
Xu Ziheng continued to play along, "Yes, you're right."
But I suddenly snapped back to reality.
No.
Did this Driver misunderstand something strange?
I quickly tugged at Xu Ziheng's sleeve to stop him from continuing, "Alright, let's not talk about it anymore."
Perhaps my voice was too soft; he didn't hear clearly and leaned closer to ask me, "What did you say?"
But this brought us even closer together.
In the rearview mirror, Driver smiled, concealing his achievements and fame.
Damn, what is this...
I was annoyed, but I couldn't say anything.
It was a torturous journey.
The three of us and a ghost finally arrived at our destination.
Before getting out of the car, Driver waved at us, saying, "Take care and be safe."
I casually thanked him.
Then I dragged Xu Ziheng into the community, heading straight for the building where I lived.
Ms.Xue floated behind us.
The lights on my floor were off, making it hard to tell if anyone was home.
The closer we got, the more nervous I felt.
Xu Ziheng spoke up, "Let's go take a look. If something seems off, we can call the police."
I nodded and led him into the elevator.
We turned left after exiting the elevator and headed straight for my apartment.
The door was closed.
Even though I had lived there for several years, in that moment, I felt a bit scared and hesitated to open the door.
I don't know what's going on inside, how my dad is doing, or if he's hurt...
Suddenly, Ms.Xue spoke up:
"There are only two people inside."
After saying that, she vanished from sight.
She probably noticed I was too anxious and wanted to remind me.
I thanked her.
Two people—one is my dad, but who is the other?
It's the middle of the night; I can't delay any longer.
I grabbed the mop that was left in the hallway and gritted my teeth as I turned the doorknob in front of me.
"Click—"
The door wasn't locked; it opened with a twist.
The living room was pitch black.
The curtains were drawn back, allowing a bit of moonlight to seep in, illuminating the coffee table and the floor, which looked almost the same as when I left.
Where is everyone? Could they not be at my house?
