I have encountered that woman for two consecutive days now, and I am very scared. I can't understand why she keeps haunting me.
I lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep, constantly thinking about this matter. By three in the afternoon, I finally got up from bed, had a light meal, and decided to find someone to accompany me on my drive.
As long as someone is with me, I believe that the ghost won't dare to come near. I thought of my cousin, Yang Wei. Yang Wei is quite bold; he enjoys watching ghost stories and often listens to supernatural events, claiming that he has seen ghosts before.
I don't believe people like him because if someone truly saw a ghost, they wouldn't be so calm about it. Yang Wei has helped me many times when I needed assistance the most, so I thought he would definitely not refuse to help this time.
I called him and invited him to dinner that evening. Yang Wei readily agreed. During dinner, I borrowed some money from him and recounted everything that had happened over the past two days in detail.
After listening to my story, Yang Wei was momentarily stunned before laughing and saying, "Brother Chengzi, are you telling ghost stories?"
I forced a smile and replied, "I'm serious; I'm on the verge of breaking down."
Yang Wei chuckled and said, "Brother Chengzi, you're too timid! If there really is a ghost, bring her over for me to see."
I sighed and said, "If I could bring her over, would I need your help?" With that, I raised my glass and clinked it with Yang Wei's before downing it in one go.
Yang Wei can hold his liquor better than I can; that night he drank two bottles of beer and became red-faced and talkative. Seeing the right moment, I said to Yang Wei, "Yang Wei, accompany Brother Chengzi on a drive; I'll pay you."
Yang Wei laughed and said, "Forget about the payment; but as for this ghost you mentioned, I don’t believe it—there are no ghosts in this world."
I smiled wryly and replied, "Whether there are ghosts or not will be clear once you accompany me."
Yang Wei patted his chest confidently and said, "No problem; I'll just consider it keeping you company."
After a hearty meal and drinks, Yang Wei and I returned home. That day, I was so exhausted that I slept soundly until dawn without having any nightmares.
When we went out again for the drive, Yang Wei casually took the passenger seat. My heart felt uneasy; my right eyelid kept twitching as if something was about to happen.
Yang Wei noticed my nervousness and smiled, saying, "Brother Chengzi, I have to say, you are really too timid. What are we two big men afraid of?"
I forced a smile and replied, "You don't understand, that female ghost is really eerie."
Yang Wei laughed and said, "I actually want to see just how eerie this female ghost is."
We traveled in silence.
As I expected, we didn't encounter the woman holding the swaddled baby on the way there.
Yang Wei became even more smug and said with a laugh, "Brother Chengzi, look at you scared out of your wits. There's no female ghost at all! I think you're just scaring yourself."
I sighed and said, "Maybe we'll run into her on the way back."
By the time we were heading back, it was already dark.
The moonlight was chilling, and the wind howled.
I glanced at my watch from time to time, feeling extremely anxious; I both hoped that woman would appear and hoped she wouldn't.
After all, she had already shown up twice, and I was genuinely frightened.
Yang Wei laughed beside me and said, "Brother Chengzi, look at you scared stiff; your face has gone pale."
I forced a smile and asked, "If it were just you alone, wouldn't you be scared?"
Yang Wei chuckled and replied, "What's there to be afraid of? Besides, didn't you say she wouldn't appear on the way here?"
I sighed and fell silent.
As we got closer to Sanliqiao, my heart raced.
In the distance, I saw a figure dressed in wet clothes, holding a swaddled baby, standing by the roadside and waving at us.
My heart sank suddenly as I pointed ahead and said, "Yang Wei, she's up ahead."
Yang Wei glanced over and laughed, saying, "Where? Brother Chengzi, are you seeing things?"
I forced a smile and said, "I really wish I were seeing things."
Yang Wei chuckled and said, "Look at you scared like that; if she comes out, I'll help you deal with her."
I replied with a forced smile, "Keep your voice down; she's right in front of us."
Yang Wei laughed again and said, "Brother Chengzi, are you confused? There's no woman up ahead!"
I jumped in surprise and looked up; the road ahead was empty—the woman was gone.
I broke out in a cold sweat, unsure how she had vanished.
Yang Wei laughed and said, "Brother Chengzi, are you hallucinating?"
I shook my head and said, "No, she was just standing right there."
Yang Wei chuckled again and asked, "Brother Chengzi, do you want to see a doctor?"
I forced a smile and said, "I'm fine."
As I spoke, I accelerated. The country road was narrow and bumpy, making it difficult to navigate.
I focused intently ahead, afraid of any unexpected incidents.
I had traveled this road twice before, and each time I reached this point, I encountered that woman.
Could it really be a coincidence?
Just as I was lost in thought, Yang Wei suddenly exclaimed, "Oh my God!"
I jumped in surprise and looked up to see that woman appearing again about ten meters ahead.
She stood right in the middle of the road, expressionless, holding a swaddled baby in her left arm and waving at us with her right hand.
My heart sank; I thought to myself, why is she out here again?
Yang Wei clutched my arm tightly: "Brother Chengzi, look, look..."
I nodded and said, "I see her; stop gripping my arm."
Yang Wei then realized he had overreacted and released my arm.
I quickly slammed on the brakes, trying to avoid hitting the roadside. The car swayed as we passed by that woman.
I glanced in the rearview mirror, but she was gone again.
Still shaken, Yang Wei stammered, "Brother Chengzi, was that woman a person or a ghost?"
I remained silent, filled with fear inside.
