Chapter 148 Furry Zombie (2)
To understand Zombie, it is divided into eight categories: Purple Zombie, White Zombie, Green Corpse, Furry Zombie, Flying Corpse, Uncorrupted Bones, Corpse, and Wandering Corpse. The first three types of zombies are merely color variations of the Corpse, but the Furry Zombie is different. A Furry Zombie is covered in long fur; for example, a red-furred Zombie would have red fur all over its body and would come out at night to bite people. The Flying Corpse belongs to corpses that have not decayed for a long time; these zombies usually have cultivated for a thousand years and can fly and use Spell. Uncorrupted Bones refers to certain parts of a body that do not decay after death due to spiritual infusion. For instance, a laborer who carries heavy loads on their shoulders may have their shoulder area remain uncorrupted after death. If these uncorrupted bones later absorb the essence of the sun and moon, they may become troublesome. A Corpse is a thousand-year-old corpse that cannot move; it can be considered a complete and intact version of Uncorrupted Bones. Over time, it may gradually transform into a Wandering Corpse after absorbing the essence of the sun and moon. According to "The Book of the God of Gaolao," "Old frogs can ward off Corpse." A Wandering Corpse is what is commonly referred to as a zombie or walking corpse, which lies dormant during the day but roams at night, absorbing external Spiritual Energy. It has no fixed dwelling and may eventually transform into a flying night demon!
Returning to the main point, I was quite frightened, thinking how could it possibly become a Furry Zombie?
Cao Qilong said, "What should we do now? This thing is not as simple as the Corpse King. The appearance of a Furry Zombie usually indicates a corpse-raising ground!"
What is a corpse-raising ground? The formation of such places is related to Feng Shui and also connected to the legendary year and month of Tai Sui. These areas have dense underground Yin Qi, where the water does not move, and there are no winds or water—what is known as a dead zone. This is not superstition; there is indeed scientific discussion about corpse-raising grounds. In these areas, the soil's pH balance is extremely unstable, making it unsuitable for organic growth, thus preventing the proliferation of ants, insects, and bacteria. A corpse buried here will not decay even after a hundred years; some studies show that hair and nails can continue to grow after death due to muscle contraction revealing parts that were previously hidden in flesh. Such corpses are called Yin Corpse, representing a transitional form between a corpse and a zombie. If not handled properly, they will quickly turn into zombies, which is also mentioned in Feng Shui.
A corpse buried in a nourishing ground has the potential to become a zombie, although this probability is extremely low. However, this one-in-a-million chance should not be underestimated. It is evident that this place is likely a corpse-raising ground, causing the trapped corpses here to become mummified and uncorrupted. Previously, we had control over them with talismans, but now that the control talisman has been removed by Cao Qilong, they are naturally going wild!
I was both shocked and terrified—shocked that we could stumble into such a legendary corpse-raising ground and terrified that those Furry Zombies had discovered us and were jumping towards us.
I immediately shouted, "Quick! Put the talisman back on!"
We had no way to retreat now; we had to subdue the four Furry Zombies before making further plans. Cao Qilong was even more frightened than I was. Hearing my words, he hurriedly took out the four control talismans that had been removed earlier and rushed forward to try to stick them back on. However, just as he got close to the zombie, he was slapped away by it and crashed hard onto the ground, raising clouds of dust while crying out in pain.
Seeing this situation unfold, I realized this wouldn't work; clearly, the Furry Zombies were different from ordinary corpses. It would be difficult to stick the talismans back on like this. So I quickly took out my Peach Wood Sword and recited the Ritual Sword Incantation: "I beseech the Flying Sword Deity, descend upon this world; let no one fear me! With this small ritual sword, I shall slay all evil spirits without leaving any behind! I serve under the command of the flying sword ancestors; let my divine weapon act swiftly!"
Peach wood can ward off evil spirits and is known as "demon-subduing wood," making it an excellent weapon against zombies. The peach tree represents one of the five tree essences; thus it suppresses evil energy. The Peach Wood Sword symbolizes the sword used by sorcerers for disaster prevention and demon expulsion. In Chinese Taoist practices, they use the Peach Wood Sword. In "Investiture of the Gods," it was used by Yun Zhongzi to help King Zhou eliminate demonic energy from his palace. This small sword nearly revealed the thousand-year-old nine-tailed fox demoness Daji. In Chinese folklore, peach wood has always been an important magical tool for warding off evil.
In ancient times, peach wood figures were placed in homes to ward off evil spirits. During the Han Dynasty, the Peach Talisman was carved and hung at doorways, referred to as the Peach Talisman. In the Book of the Later Han, it is mentioned that "in the month of Midsummer, when all things flourish and the summer solstice brings forth yin energy, fearing that things may not thrive, one should carve a Peach Talisman six inches long and three inches square, inscribing it with five colors according to the method, to be placed at doorways." During the Song Dynasty, images of Shentu and the Two Deities were carved or simply their names were written on two door panels, also called the Peach Talisman or Door Gods, which were feared by all demons. Thus, it can be seen that peach wood is truly a "demon-repelling wood."
As soon as the peach wood sword was consecrated, several Furry Zombies lunged forward. I immediately cast a spell and raised my sword to meet them. I struck the first Furry Zombie with my sword; it clearly sensed the yang energy from the peach wood sword and raised its hands to block. However, this block was like pork meeting a hot iron rod, producing a sizzling sound as black smoke erupted, pushing it back several steps.
Zombies are formed by absorbing yin energy from the sun and moon, so the strong yang energy of the peach wood sword can counteract them. Having landed a hit, I did not dare to be careless because although the peach wood sword could intimidate them, it clearly could not easily kill them. Moreover, there were four Furry Zombies in front of me, making the situation even more dire.
With one Furry Zombie pushed back, I raised my sword again and stabbed at another Furry Zombie. Since Furry Zombies are not ghosts, their movements are stiff and not agile; thus, my sword directly pierced its chest. However, despite the black smoke billowing and the zombie howling in pain, my sword could not penetrate its body. It was evident that the yang energy of the peach wood sword was still insufficient to slay a Furry Zombie.
With the tip of my sword pressed against the zombie's chest, I did not hesitate. Seeing that the yang energy of the peach wood sword was not strong enough, I bit my fingertip and smeared my blood onto the blade of the peach wood sword, drawing a talisman of pure yang with my finger. Instantly, a golden light flashed from the blade; the Furry Zombie I had stabbed was sent flying backward and crashed several meters away.
Just as I sent the second Furry Zombie flying, I heard Cao Qilong shout for caution. Then I felt another Furry Zombie had gotten close to me. Just as I intended to dodge back frantically, I realized I couldn't run anymore because my feet were already off the ground; a pair of foul-smelling hands covered in white fur had grabbed me and lifted me off my feet.
At this moment, I was truly terrified. I wanted to struggle, but those hands were incredibly strong; I couldn't break free at all.
I turned to look; who else could be lifting me off the ground but a Furry Zombie? It exhaled a putrid breath; its long sharp fangs dripped with saliva, clearly considering me as a delicious meal.
As I looked at it, it pulled me closer to itself; suddenly we were in an intimate bear hug. Its hands gripped my shoulders tightly, rendering me immobile. My head slammed against the shoulder of the Furry Zombie; its shoulder was as hard as steel and knocked me senseless.
Of course, what scared me most was that it then opened its foul mouth wide and aimed to bite my neck. Its long fangs indicated that if it bit me even once, today would be my last day.
At this critical moment between life and death, how could I hesitate? With all my might, I leaned back and then slammed my head toward the other side of the Furry Zombie's shoulder where it was trying to bite me, narrowly avoiding its jaws.
Meanwhile, Cao Qilong was not idle either; while I was being grabbed by one Furry Zombie, he had already pounced on its back and was fiercely holding onto its head while pulling it backward with all his strength.
Just as I dodged my head to the other side of the Furry Zombie's shoulder, it opened its jaws again, trying to bite my neck. However, this time, Cao Qilong tightly held onto its head, preventing it from biting me. Taking advantage of this moment, I hurriedly raised the Peach Wood Sword in my hand and began to stab wildly at the Furry Zombie's body!
Unable to bite me and under attack from the Peach Wood Sword, the Furry Zombie let out a howl as black smoke billowed from its body. It then violently shook its head, nearly throwing both Cao Qilong and me off.
I dared not let go; after all, I had no idea how strong the Furry Zombie was. If it threw me off and I crashed against the stone wall, my brains would surely splatter everywhere.
In that moment, I shouted to Cao Qilong, "Quick! Stick on the Control Corpse Talisman!"
