Chapter 106: The Village of the Dead
Cao Qilong was somewhat surprised and took a moment to process my sudden thought. He said, "What did you say? Going to the Northeast?"
"Yes, going to the Northeast. I want to find an immortal to help me ferry to the Underworld," I nodded.
Cao Qilong was stunned for a while, then furrowed his brows and remained silent. Seeing this, I asked him, "Is there a problem, Senior Brother? If you don't want to accompany me, I can go alone; after all, I'm used to it. And you just returned from outside; it's good for you to rest in the shop for a while."
Cao Qilong hurriedly shook his head and said, "No, Shenbao, you misunderstood me. We are brothers; your matters are my matters. How could I let you go alone? It's just that Earth Immortals usually have strange tempers and look down on others. Even if you find an immortal in the Northeast, getting them to help you will be as difficult as climbing to the sky."
I understood what Cao Qilong meant. Indeed, although Earth Immortals are not true immortals, they can be even more difficult to deal with. To get them to do hard work for you is nearly impossible. If you're not careful and offend them, you might bring disaster upon yourself. After all, animals have small tempers; if they feel disrespected, they will surely retaliate and cause trouble for you for generations.
However, I was genuinely touched that Cao Qilong could say such things. It was clear he spoke from the heart; he had already regarded me as family, and indeed the only family in this world. I couldn't help but feel moved and said, "Senior Brother, thank you for being willing to help me. I understand what you said; it's just that if I don't try my best, I'll never be able to find an immortal to help me."
Cao Qilong sighed and patted my shoulder, saying, "Alright, when do you plan to set off? I'll accompany you."
I smiled and told him that I wanted to leave tomorrow.
Since we were both unattached and single, Cao Qilong readily agreed. That day we began packing our belongings, and early the next morning we closed the shop door and left Master Ma's store, heading northeast...
We didn't take a vehicle but walked instead because Cao Qilong said that whether we could find an immortal depended on fate. As we walked along the way helping others resolve their troubles and accumulating good karma, we would naturally attract opportunities from the immortals.
I agreed with his suggestion; indeed, everything is about cause and effect. By accumulating good deeds, we would surely attract opportunities from the immortals in some mysterious way. Thus, we set out on our journey once again. However, this time we were not aimlessly wandering like headless flies; our goal was clear: keep heading north until we reached the Northeast.
In the past, I traveled alone and felt lonely; this time I had a companion who could talk along the way. Although we often slept outdoors with the ground as our bed and the sky as our blanket, my heart felt less burdened than before.
As we traveled along this road, we encountered many things. I still remember that just two days after leaving the shop, we encountered something strange.
That day we arrived at a village. Feeling thirsty and tired as night fell, we decided to look for a kind-hearted person to stay with for the night.
The village wasn't large—about a hundred households—and it was quite poor; there were no brick walls or red tiles but rather dilapidated houses with black roofs made of earth. Upon entering the village, we randomly approached a house at the entrance and knocked on the door. A woman came out with a small child and looked at us curiously as strangers before asking what we wanted.
We told the woman that we are wandering gentlemen, and today we have arrived in this village, feeling thirsty and tired, hoping to ask for a cup of water.
Upon hearing this, the woman invited us into her home, brewed some tea, and then curiously asked if we could exorcise evil spirits.
We nodded and asked her why she had such a question. The woman did not answer us but hurriedly called out to her husband in the back room, saying, "Come out quickly! We have two Yin Yang Masters here; our child is saved this time!"
Upon hearing this, Cao Qilong and I exchanged glances, thinking that we had encountered someone in distress.
Before long, a man in his forties came out from the back room. Seeing us, he quickly approached and shook our hands, saying with some excitement, "Gentlemen, my surname is Wang. Today, having two gentlemen visit my home might just mean that my royal family's fate is not yet sealed."
Hearing this, Cao Qilong couldn't help but ask, "Brother Wang, what seems to be the problem? If you are facing any troubles, please feel free to tell us. If my Shidi and I can help, we will certainly not refuse."
Brother Wang nodded with a bitter expression on his face. He said, "I originally had two or three sons, but over the past few years, two of them have died. Now there is only one youngest son left. I fear that in a few days, something may happen to him as well. Therefore, I would like to ask you gentlemen for help in protecting my youngest son. I beg you."
We glanced at the child hiding behind the woman. He was about five or six years old, looking quite adorable with a round face. However, there was nothing unusual about him.
So I said, "Brother Wang, your son is very cute and appears healthy. Why do you say such things? He doesn't seem like he would have any problems."
Brother Wang sighed and said, "You gentlemen do not know; our village is different from others. Although people here may seem fine on the surface, they do not live long lives—especially children; many of them die young. They either fall ill with strange diseases or suffer accidents; it is very difficult for them to grow up. That is why I want to ask you gentlemen to take a look and see what the cause might be. I cannot lose my youngest son; otherwise, how will we old folks survive?"
"Are you saying that this is true for the entire village and not just your family?" Upon hearing this, I was somewhat shocked. If all the children in a village have short lives, then it indicates a serious problem—not something that could be caused by just one or two evil spirits.
Cao Qilong was also surprised. Seeing me ask this question, he looked at Brother Wang and waited for his response.
Brother Wang nodded: "Yes, it is true for the entire village. Adults also do not live long; many die old while specifically harming children. Therefore, every family in our village tends to have several children because some will inevitably not survive. This has been going on for a long time."
At that moment, I opened my Third Eye to look into the village. To my shock, although it was dark outside and nothing could be seen clearly, through my Heavenly Eye I could see thick Yin Qi swirling around the village.
Seeing this made me speculate that it was very likely due to the heavy Yin Qi in this village over a long period of time affecting health. First of all, children's Yang Qi is weak and thus easily influenced by Yin Qi; adults generally have stronger Yang Qi and are less affected. However, living in such an environment for an extended period would also be detrimental to adults; it would not be surprising for many to die.
Since it was now dark outside and I could only discern the heavy Yin Qi in the village but could not determine how it formed at this time, I said to Brother Wang: "How about this? Tomorrow we will help you take a look and do our best to resolve this matter."
Brother Wang felt a surge of gratitude and quickly instructed the woman to prepare dinner to properly host the two of us.
In the evening, Cao Qilong asked me what I thought about the situation.
I shared what I had seen with my Heavenly Eye, and Cao Qilong seemed surprised after hearing it. He said that if a village had such heavy Yin energy, there could only be two possibilities: one is due to Feng Shui reasons, meaning the village might be located in a place with bad Feng Shui, like a gathering of Yin energy; the second possibility is that there might be a large number of Evil Spirits in that area.
Hearing him say this made a lot of sense to me, so I asked, “If that’s the case, what should we do?”
Cao Qilong scratched his head and smiled wryly, “No matter which situation it is, it’s a big problem. We have our work cut out for us this time.”
“But we came here precisely because of these troubles. No matter how big the trouble is, we have to face it,” I said, exchanging a smile with Cao Qilong as we waited for dawn to go out and investigate.
With our plans set, we went to bed early.
However, just as we were sleeping in the middle of the night, we suddenly felt as if we were floating in the air, swaying back and forth. This sensation was indescribable; it felt like we weren’t sleeping on a bed on the Ground, but rather on a moving bed.
I immediately woke up and opened my eyes; everything seemed normal. I was certain that the previous feeling wasn’t an illusion, so I nudged Cao Qilong awake and asked him, “Senior Brother, did you feel like you were swaying in the air after falling asleep?”
Cao Qilong was initially annoyed when I woke him up, but upon hearing my question, he was startled: “Are you saying you felt that too? I thought I was just dreaming.”
I exclaimed, “This is bad; there must be something wrong.”
