Chapter Eighty-Eight: The Huang Family Haunting
Mr. Huang said that a few months ago, every night in their home, the lights would turn off by themselves. At first, they thought there was a problem with the wiring. However, when they called an electrician to check, he said there was nothing wrong with the wiring.
One time, while the Huang family was having dinner, the lights suddenly went out again for no reason. At that moment, their five-year-old son suddenly said to Mr. Huang and his wife, "Dad, Mom, why does that old lady in our house always play with the light switch? It's not fun at all; we can't even see while eating."
Mr. Huang and his wife were quite frightened because there were only three people in their family; how could there be an old lady? They scolded their son, telling him not to talk nonsense and to hurry up and eat. They then lit some candles and told their son to continue eating.
However, Mr. Huang's son seriously pointed towards the living room light switch and said, "I'm not lying; the old lady is standing right there and smiling at us..."
This scared Mr. Huang and his wife greatly. Looking at the position of the living room light switch, they saw nothing and immediately felt a chill run down their spines as cold sweat broke out. They believed their son wouldn't lie to them; he must have truly seen the so-called old lady.
Since then, Mr. Huang's son often pointed at empty spaces in the house and told Mr. Huang and his wife that the old lady had come again.
Every time the son mentioned that the old lady had arrived, the lights in the house would quickly turn off by themselves.
As this happened more frequently, Mr. Huang became a bit braver. One time, his five-year-old son told him that the old lady had gone to turn off the lights again, and sure enough, the lights went out again shortly after. At this point, Mr. Huang mustered his courage to walk over to the light switch and turned it on. Although he managed to turn on the light, it quickly turned off again with a "click" right in front of him.
This startled Mr. Huang; he realized that whatever it was was right beside him, making him too scared to turn on the lights again.
Such strange occurrences continued for over half a month until other situations began to arise in their home. First, at night when everyone was asleep, they would often hear someone knocking on the door. When Mr. Huang opened the door to check, he would find nothing outside. Sometimes, in a daze, they could also hear footsteps inside the house making "clap clap" sounds as if there were indeed another person living there, which disturbed Mr. Huang and his family so much that they couldn't sleep well.
But that wasn't even the worst part; eventually, when Mr. Huang's family went to bed with their heads facing east and feet facing west, they would wake up the next morning only to find themselves with their feet facing west and heads facing east—completely turned around.
Perhaps someone would ask, did they wake up in a daze at night and accidentally sleep the wrong way?
Yes, they wished that were the case. However, what they couldn't explain was that they were still lying with their heads at the head of the bed and their feet at the foot; it wasn't them who turned around in the middle of the night, but the bed itself!
In other words, they went to bed with the head of the bed against the east wall, but when they woke up the next day, they found that the bed had turned completely around, with the foot now against the east wall and the head at the west.
Mr. Huang was so frightened by this situation that he dared not sleep in the bed anymore. After all, who would lift a bed and move it in the middle of the night for no reason?
The bed moving by itself wasn't even the worst part; since it moved at night, Mr. Huang decided not to sleep in it anymore. Instead, he set up a mat on the floor for his family of three to sleep on. He thought this would be safe, but when they woke up the next day, they discovered that while they had all slept on one mat, one person was now in the room, another in the kitchen, and the third lying in the living room...
At this point, they dared not stay any longer, realizing that their house was haunted. They ran to a hotel for a few nights. However, thinking about how it was their own purchased home and now they couldn't return made them anxious. Finally, they sought out a Great Master. After hearing about their situation, the master told Mr. Huang that their house was a haunted place and gave him some talismans to stick on their doors and windows.
With the talismans in hand, Mr. Huang and his family returned home and followed the Great Master's instructions to stick them on all doors and windows. But once they were posted, things took a turn for the worse; Mr. Huang's son suddenly collapsed to the ground.
This frightened Mr. Huang greatly. Just as they were preparing to take him to the hospital, the child suddenly woke up. However, he was completely different from before; he grinned coldly in a way that was not typical for a four or five-year-old.
Mr. Huang shivered and wanted to ask what was wrong with his son, but the child ignored him and jumped up like a monkey from the ground straight onto a chandelier on the ceiling. Keep in mind he was only four or five years old—how could he jump so high? It was as if he were a martial arts star from a movie, flying through the air.
This leap left Mr. Huang and his wife speechless with fear. The child then jumped onto doors and windows and tore down all of the talismans Mr. Huang had just put up.
After tearing down the talismans, the child collapsed back onto the ground again. When he woke up this time, although he wasn't jumping around scarily like before, he seemed dazed and took many days to recover.
After such an incident, Mr. Huang decided to sell the house. However, every time he brought potential buyers to see it, as soon as they entered, they would turn around and leave in fright. When he chased after them to ask why they left without looking around, they would say that his house wasn't clean because there was an old lady in funeral clothes sitting on their sofa staring at them.
The house couldn't be sold, no matter how low the price dropped; no one was willing to buy a haunted house. With no other options, Mr. Huang's family had to move back home, but they were afraid to put up any talismans again, fearing it would offend the spirits and harm their family.
Thus, they had to endure the disturbances every day. There were mysterious power outages, lights turning on by themselves in the living room, and footsteps echoing through the house. Even in the quiet of the night, they could hear someone crying inside the house. What Mr. Huang and his family found most unbearable was that during meals, his youngest son would often get up halfway through eating to fetch a pair of chopsticks and a bowl from the kitchen to set at the empty spot on the dining table. When his mother asked him what he was doing, he would say it was because Grandma wanted to eat with them. Hearing this made Mr. Huang's family too scared to eat.
Living in such a state of constant fear took a toll on their mood and luck. Mr. Huang was already driven to despair by whatever was haunting their home, nearly pushed to a breaking point.
At this point, Mr. Huang wiped away a tear and said, "Brother, no, Master, can you tell me what is going on? Why is this spirit so intent on bothering our family?"
I replied, "Your house is new; have you asked if there were any accidents during its construction?"
I asked this because it sounded like his house might indeed be a haunted one.
However, Mr. Huang shook his head vigorously and said, "There were no accidents at all. I’ve inquired with many people; it used to be a residential area that was rebuilt after demolition. Nothing bad has ever happened there."
Hearing this left me puzzled.
Seeing that I remained silent, Mr. Huang grew anxious and said, "Master, if you truly know how to deal with ghosts, please have mercy and help us! As long as you can drive that thing away and stop it from bothering us again, I will be sure to thank you properly."
While I didn't care much about gratitude, encountering such a situation meant I couldn't just ignore it. So I told him, "How about this? Take me to your home now so I can see what exactly is haunting you. Then we can think of a way to deal with it. What do you think?"
Mr. Huang had no objections; seeing that I was willing to help, he nodded in agreement. I packed my things quickly and followed him back to his house...
