Chapter Seventy-Eight: Sending Souls Across the Bridge
After a long time, the weeping female ghost gradually stopped, and her gaze towards her brother lost the previous resentment, replaced instead by deep self-blame.
The man said to his sister, "Sister, don't blame yourself. Brother doesn't blame you, and Father won't blame you either, because we all know you were under the influence of a bad person’s evil technique, which is why you did such things."
I also advised, "Your brother is right. It was someone else who caused your parents' deaths; it has nothing to do with you. You are also a victim, so don't be too hard on yourself."
After our persuasion, the female ghost felt much better. Although she was still sad and guilty, at least she was no longer dazed and silent. The female ghost slowly raised her head and suddenly knelt before us, begging us to find the murderer and avenge them. Seeing his sister kneel, the man also knelt down and begged alongside her.
I hurriedly told them to get up and informed them that we had been investigating the person who harmed them these past few days, so we would do our best in this matter. The Wang Team also assured them that the wicked would eventually receive their due legal punishment.
The siblings believed our words, or perhaps they knew we were speaking the truth.
Then I asked the man to take me to his corpse; I needed to help him remove the Soul Locking Needle. I instructed the female ghost to gather all the wandering souls in the village. Although she didn't know what I intended to do, she turned and left to call the other wandering souls in the village.
The man's corpse was in a cattle shed outside. The corpse was still hanging from a wooden beam in the shed. After taking down the corpse, I indeed found a seven-inch Soul Locking Needle on top of its head. After removing the Soul Locking Needle, I returned to the entrance of the old house and saw that many wandering souls had already gathered outside.
There were both men and women among them; some looked dazed while others were filled with resentment. I recognized one family among them; upon seeing me arrive, they asked what I had called them all for.
I told them that they were all killed by Liu Lao Er through Yin Yang Separation. When people die, they should pass through the Yellow Springs into the Underworld. If everyone remained here with resentment like you do, wouldn’t it create chaos? So please heed my advice and hurry on your way; we will help you take revenge for your grievances.
At first, many wandering souls were unwilling to go down, saying they couldn't accept it until they saw Liu Lao Er receive his punishment; they couldn't swallow their resentment.
I said that if you refuse to listen to my advice, I would have no choice but to go down to the Underworld and inform the Ghost Messenger. At that time, you would still be taken down below. Not only would you suffer in Hell, but I also wouldn't be able to help you take revenge.
Upon hearing this, everyone became anxious. Some were worried about suffering Hell's punishment while others feared their grievances would go unavenged. Finally, someone nodded in agreement with my suggestion; once one person agreed, another followed suit, and soon all the wandering souls agreed to leave.
In truth, I was doing this for their own good. They had already died a tragic death; lingering in the Yin Realm due to resentment as lonely souls was truly pitiful.
Later, I found some paper in the old house and made a paper bridge. Once the bridge was ready, I carried it to the village entrance and called for the Wandering Souls to hurry across the bridge!
This bridge is called the Bridge of Helplessness. Of course, it is not the same Bridge of Helplessness on the road to the Underworld; this bridge has no Meng Po and no Ghost Messenger. It is merely a medium to send souls into the Yellow Springs. As long as the souls cross this paper bridge, they will reach the Underworld and Yellow Springs. In simple terms, this paper bridge serves as a connection between the Yin Realm and the Underworld.
Those Wandering Souls might have been thinking about their grudges or feeling reluctant to leave the World of the Living, so some of them began to cry, some sighed helplessly, and others appeared dazed and emotionless.
Thus, one by one, these Wandering Souls lined up to walk onto the paper bridge...
Some had family members; they held hands, worried that they wouldn't find each other on the other side. Watching them, Wang Team sighed beside me, saying, "Ghosts do have feelings."
Indeed, ghosts do have feelings because they are just like humans. The reason they frighten people is mainly because humans fear death.
The paper bridge is about nine feet long and three feet wide. Families walked onto the bridge together. Many Wandering Souls who reached the middle of the bridge couldn't help but look back at their former homes. Although the houses were already dilapidated, their eyes revealed deep reluctance and memories of people or events they had cherished.
They knew that once they crossed the bridge, everything in the World of the Living would no longer concern them. Thus, they all sighed as they stepped forward toward the other side of the bridge. After crossing, the Wandering Souls vanished. I knew that was because they had entered the Underworld and Yellow Springs Road; that was where they were meant to go...
About half an hour later, all the Wandering Souls had finally crossed the paper bridge. Looking at the bare paper bridge and the nearby dilapidated house while listening to the eerie silence in the village, I couldn't help but feel a bit sad while also sighing with relief. Yes, they had all left; there would be no more ghosts haunting Liu Family Village. However, once these Wandering Souls reached the Underworld, would they truly be able to let go of their grudges? Perhaps they would quietly wait below for us to avenge them?
Once everything was done, I exchanged glances with Wang Team and could only see mutual helplessness and sadness in each other's eyes. I sighed and said, "Let's go back; there won't be any more reports from Liu Family Village!"
Wang Team nodded and led the detectives with me toward the village exit...
However, we hadn't walked far when suddenly lights flickered ahead. We couldn't help but wonder why anyone would come to Liu Family Village at this late hour.
Soon, those carrying torches approached us. When we saw who it was, we were taken aback—it was all city leaders! This surprised us all; why would City Leaders come here at such a late hour?
The leaders seemed to notice our confusion and informed us that thanks to our efforts, Liu Lao Er had turned himself in at City Bureau just as we were leaving. The long-buried massacre case had been successfully solved!
Upon hearing this news, we were all extremely shocked—Liu Lao Er turned himself in? How could that possibly happen? However, despite our shock, we did not doubt what the city leaders said. After our surprise wore off, we felt joy—true joy—because it meant everything had come to an end.
Then, the City Leaders told us that the media is reporting on this matter everywhere online, and even the Ministry of Public Security has called the city to commend everyone for their contributions this time. So, they came here directly to share the good news with us without waiting for us to return.
As he spoke, he waved his hand, and someone behind him handed out medals to everyone, along with large amounts of Gramps Mao. The leader said this was our reward, well-deserved.
I looked at those Gramps Mao, stacked high, and each person had at least a hundred to two hundred thousand. This made everyone feel an unprecedented excitement.
Every day holding medals and bonuses in hand, the leaders warmly shook hands with everyone and then mentioned that the car was waiting outside the mountain. Once we returned to the city, many reporters would come for interviews, so we were urged to hurry back.
Thus, we prepared to follow the leaders out of the mountain. However, at that moment, a sudden Yin Wind rushed in. I was startled and shouted that there was danger, then pointed decisively to prepare for the sudden attack from an Evil Spirit.
But when the Evil Spirit appeared, I realized it was actually someone familiar—a soaked and emaciated old lady leaning on a cane. Wasn't this the Ghost Granny we had promised to find a new home for?
Seeing Ghost Granny, I couldn't help but question her: "Ghost Granny, what are you doing? We haven't forgotten about your situation; we'll find you a new place once we return."
To my surprise, Ghost Granny raised her cane and struck me on the head, saying, "You've been possessed! Wake up! You've been possessed!"
"Possessed?" Hearing Ghost Granny say this about me left me puzzled; I didn't understand what she meant.
At that moment, however, the city leaders in front of me suddenly lunged toward Ghost Granny. I was shocked; could it be that these officials were also practitioners of Yin-Yang Dao? How could they dare to confront a ghost?
Just as I was still in shock, Ghost Granny seemed very afraid of the leaders and shouted at me, "You've been possessed! Just bite your tongue!" After saying that, she turned and fled as if flying away...
