Chapter 71: The Horror of the Morgue
About ten minutes later, I finally arrived at the City Bureau. Team Leader Wang, who had received the call, was waiting for me outside the door. When he saw me, he came over and thanked me for my diligent help.
Seeing that Team Leader Wang could still say such polite words, I felt relieved; at least it meant that the female corpse hadn't caused any trouble.

Nowadays, government offices are like this; regardless of how many staff there are or whether so many floors are necessary, their office buildings must be very grand. Perhaps this is to make them seem superior?
The homicide division's office was located on the second floor. The entire building was dark, with only the first floor still lit. Team Leader Wang told me that he had left three detectives to guard the corpse in the morgue while the others took the bodies of five comrades to the funeral home.
The morgue was situated behind the office building, adjacent to it, in a standalone single-story structure. As Team Leader Wang spoke to me, he led me toward the back of the office building...
Just as we had taken a few steps, a gunshot suddenly rang out from behind the office building! The sound echoed loudly in the quiet night, instantly shattering the tranquility. Both Wang and I were startled and shouted that something must have happened at the morgue!
We immediately ran toward the morgue. As we ran, Team Leader Wang drew his service weapon while I hurriedly took out several talismans from my bag and gripped a copper coin sword in my hand.
Upon reaching the morgue, we saw two detectives lying on the ground, while another detective sat on the ground with a terrified expression, his trembling hands tightly gripping his service weapon, clearly shaken.

I rushed forward to check on the two fallen detectives and found that one of them was already dead, with four or five large wounds on his neck and a pool of blood on the ground. The other detective lying on the ground was still struggling, clutching his stomach with a grimace of extreme pain.
At this moment, the door to the morgue was wide open. Looking through the open door, I saw three movable beds inside, all empty. On one of the beds lay a piece of white cloth used to cover corpses.
My heart sank as I realized that my worst fear had come true—the female corpse had escaped again.
Team Leader Wang couldn't believe what was happening before him. He shook the deceased detective but received no response. He then checked for a pulse and helplessly rushed to the struggling detective, asking how he was while frantically dialing emergency services on his phone.
The injured detective's face was pale and devoid of color as he clutched his stomach and could barely speak. From his appearance, I knew he must be gravely injured.
At this moment, Team Leader Wang turned back and shouted at the seemingly uninjured but visibly frightened detective, "Xiao Li, are you okay? What exactly happened? Where is the female corpse?"
The detective named Xiao Li was still trembling from fear, unable to recover. Have you ever seen someone shivering all over even in the scorching heat? "What? The corpse came back to life!" Although Wang had mentally prepared himself, he was still taken aback. He said, "How could a corpse come back to life? Are you saying that Old Zhang was killed by the corpse?"
Xiao Li immediately began to cry. He nodded and said, "Yes, it came back to life, just like a zombie in a movie. It ran straight out and killed Brother Zhang in an instant. Xiao Liu was also seriously injured. Our guns were completely useless against that thing. I... I thought I was going to die this time too!"
No wonder they were so terrified; any normal person would be unable to handle such a scene. It should be noted that last time, a forensic doctor was scared to death because of the female corpse, which shows how horrifying it was. A corpse coming back to life and being able to kill someone in an instant, with guns having no effect on it, would certainly instill fear and helplessness in anyone. It turned out that just over ten minutes ago, Xiao Li, Brother Zhang, and Xiao Liu were sitting on a bench outside the morgue keeping watch. Since they had made a trip to Liu Family Village earlier that night, everyone was tired and sleepy, and before they knew it, all three had dozed off.
Not long ago, they suddenly heard a woman's laughter coming from inside the morgue behind them, which startled all three awake. They could tell from each other's expressions that they had all heard the woman's laughter. So Brother Zhang asked Xiao Li and Xiao Liu if they had figured out where the laughter was coming from.
At that moment, both Xiao Li and Xiao Liu were still groggy from sleep and hadn’t clearly heard where the sound came from; they only felt strange because the laughter was piercingly sharp, drilling into their hearts and making them uncomfortable.

Brother Zhang, the oldest among them, scolded Xiao Liu for being foolish and said there couldn't be so many ghosts; there was only a corpse inside—where would a ghost come from?
Xiao Liu replied that there couldn't be anyone else in the morgue besides a female corpse that had been dead for quite some time; how could there be laughter coming from inside?
Indeed, since the morgue is a place for temporarily storing corpses and has refrigeration equipment to prevent decomposition, it resembles an ice cellar. The entire morgue is sealed with no windows—only one door guarded by the three of them. However, they had been standing guard outside without letting anyone in; after all, who would willingly enter a place meant for dead bodies?

Brother Zhang scolded Xiao Li for watching too many zombie movies. Just then, there was another noise coming from inside the morgue—a series of creaking sounds that sounded like something moving on the gurney where bodies are placed.
The commotion this time was intermittent, making it clearer to hear; the sound was coming from the morgue. At that moment, Xiao Li suggested calling someone for help.
Old Zhang said not to panic; if they called everyone over and found nothing inside, where would they put their faces? Then, Old Zhang pulled out his sidearm and told Xiao Li and Xiao Liu that with this in hand, he could shoot even a ghost to pieces. He then instructed Xiao Li and Xiao Liu to wait outside while he went in to take a look.
At that time, Xiao Li and the others didn’t feel there was any danger. Just as Old Zhang said, they had guns in their hands. They were only worried about ghosts and felt scared. So when Old Zhang asked them to wait outside while he entered alone, Xiao Li and the others didn’t try too hard to dissuade him, allowing Old Zhang to enter the morgue by himself.
Xiao Li and Xiao Liu stood outside the morgue with their guns drawn, aiming at the door, while Old Zhang reached out and opened the door to the morgue, slowly stepping inside!
However, just as Old Zhang stepped into the morgue, he saw a white shadow flash by; suddenly, a woman appeared right in front of him. Who else could this person be but the female corpse?
Old Zhang was so frightened that he shouted because the female corpse was standing right in front of him, too close for comfort. He wanted to turn and run, but it was already too late. Xiao Li saw the female corpse suddenly open her blood-red eyes and reach out to grab Old Zhang by the neck. Her sharp fingers pierced into his throat, and blood gushed out like a fountain…
Xiao Li and the others were stunned; seeing Old Zhang fall straight back onto the ground, they opened fire on the female corpse.
However, when the bullets hit her body, it was as if they had struck a rotten bloodstained bag; she showed no reaction at all. At that moment, the corpse lunged directly at Xiao Liu, kicking him far away. Xiao Li was so scared that he fell onto the ground, watching helplessly as the corpse passed by him and jumped over the wall to escape…
When we heard the gunshots and rushed over, the female corpse had just fled. Looking at Xiao Li who was still in shock and at the two lying on the ground, I couldn’t help but sigh heavily; I had arrived too late!
After Xiao Li recounted what happened, he anxiously asked Team Leader Wang: “Captain, what should we do now? Our people can’t handle it at all.”
Team Leader Wang comforted Xiao Li briefly before asking me: “Sir, what do you think we should do? How could that corpse come back to life on its own?”
