Chapter Sixty-Seven: Liu Family Village
After the old lady left, Team Leader Wang couldn't hold back any longer and hurriedly asked me what that Ghost Granny was all about.
I told them about Ghost Granny asking for my help, which left them startled. Clearly, they thought what we encountered tonight was too shocking.
Team Leader Wang said, "Are we really going to find a good feng shui spot for that Ghost Granny?"
I nodded and said, "We must fulfill our promise to the ghost; otherwise, she will haunt us for the rest of our lives."
Upon hearing this, Team Leader Wang shivered and then said that after we finish the current case, we would go find a resting place for Ghost Granny.
I smiled wryly, thinking that our trip to Liu Family Village was off to a rocky start. We were still on the way, hadn't even seen a glimpse of Liu Family Village yet, and already had attracted quite a bit of trouble. I wondered what other issues awaited us when we finally arrived.
While I was lost in thought, Team Leader Wang asked me what we should do next—should we continue on?
I replied, "The promise I made to help Ghost Granny wasn't in vain; she also pointed out that we have entered the Ghost Market."
"Ah?" This scared everyone. The name Ghost Market sounded terrifying enough.
In fact, I was also startled when I heard this. The Ghost Market only appears in extremely sinister places; it's like a market for ghosts where all spirits gather. If living people carelessly stumble into the Ghost Market, it could spell disaster for them.
After I explained this, Team Leader Wang and the others looked even more worried and seemed ready to turn back.
I chuckled and said, "There's no need to be afraid. That Ghost Granny also mentioned a way to get out. She said if we take seven steps with our eyes closed, we can leave the Ghost Market."
Team Leader Wang asked me, "What does 'take seven steps with our eyes closed' mean? It sounds like an insult."
I couldn't help but laugh and explained, "What it means is that as long as we close our eyes and walk forward seven steps, we'll be able to exit the current Ghost Market."
Everyone looked enlightened after hearing this, and then I asked everyone to close their eyes and take seven steps forward before opening them again.
After walking seven steps with our eyes closed, we opened our eyes and indeed found ourselves out of the Ghost Market.
What lay before us was no longer a wide road, but a narrow stone path overgrown with weeds taller than a person. Seeing this, we couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, thinking we had finally made it out.
At that moment, a police officer who was still shaken asked me what would have happened if we hadn't known to close our eyes and just kept walking forward in the Ghost Market.
I said, "Perhaps we would have wandered inside for a lifetime and never found our way out."
Hearing this, everyone gasped in shock, clearly frightened by my words.
Indeed, I wasn't lying to them. When I was young, I had heard my grandfather say that once you enter the Ghost Market, if you don't know how to leave, you will be trapped inside forever. There is no day or night in the Ghost Market because the place where it appears is a junction of yin and yang, a place half in shadow and half in light, filled with heavy yin energy. Therefore, if living people wander around carelessly in the Ghost Market, they can easily stumble into the path of the underworld.
However, now that we had made it out, this could be considered a stroke of luck amidst misfortune. At this time, one of the police officers remarked that it was unexpected that the Ghost Granny was actually kind enough to save our lives.
I smiled and said, "So, doing good deeds while alive is not a bad thing; planting good seeds will surely yield good fruits. If we hadn't agreed to help the Ghost Granny find a new resting place, she wouldn't have pointed us the way out."
Everyone nodded and promised to take care of the Ghost Granny's resting place when the time came.
With that, we set off again. This time I led the way once more, and after that, we didn't encounter any more troubles along the way; only occasionally did some night birds take flight, startling everyone who was already on edge.
After about half an hour of walking, we arrived at Liu Family Village. It was already late at night. As soon as we entered the village entrance, we saw desolation and decay all around us. A full moon hung high in the sky, casting light on weeds taller than people everywhere. Amongst the dense weeds stood dilapidated haunted houses that were on the verge of collapse. The entire village looked lifeless and eerily silent!
Although the ruined houses in the village were overgrown with wild grass, the bluestone path within the village was quite bright. As I walked along the Bluestone Path deeper into the village while glancing at the houses on either side, suddenly I noticed that one of the Dilapidated Houses had its door open by itself. The creaking sound of the door opening was jarring in the stillness of the night.
Now everyone was quite frightened because there were no residents in this village; how could a door open by itself?
Feeling both startled and curious, I decided to approach and take a look.
The house with the open door was a wooden structure with very few roof tiles left intact. Seeing me walk towards the wooden house, everyone followed closely behind me, gripping their guns tightly in their hands and staring nervously into the house.
Slowly, we approached the wooden house outside, and I made a "shh" gesture, prompting everyone to stop. We held our breath and listened carefully to the sounds coming from inside the house, and we could actually hear a series of "creaking" noises!
I thought to myself, could there really be something inside? With that thought, I could no longer hold back, so I quietly walked toward the slightly open door.
As soon as my foot crossed the threshold, I felt a chilling "Yin Wind" sweep through the room, causing me to shiver uncontrollably. I thought to myself that this was not good; the "Yin Qi" in this house was too thick, and it definitely concealed some "Evil Spirits."
At that moment, the same "squeaking" sound we heard outside returned, this time very clear and distinct. The sound was coming from above my head. Following the "creaking" noise, I looked up and was shocked to see seven or eight corpses hanging above me!
Those corpses suspended in mid-air swayed gently with the "Yin Wind," producing a "creaking" sound.
I suddenly felt my scalp tingle; I realized that the "creaking" sound originated from the corpses being blown by the wind, causing the hemp ropes and beams holding them to rub against each other.
Since most of the roof tiles on this wooden house had fallen off, moonlight shone directly on the faces of the corpses. When I looked at those hanging corpses, their distorted faces from hanging suddenly twisted into a grin, and their eyes popped wide open!
This scared me greatly; knowing that these dead souls were still lingering around, I hurriedly stepped back out of the threshold and urged everyone to leave quickly to avoid trouble.
We fled back onto the Bluestone Path, and I told everyone to hurry away from this wooden house. The Wang Team didn't know what was happening inside since they hadn't entered, so they followed me while asking what I had seen.
I told them that there were several corpses hanging inside, and judging by their appearance, they had already turned into "Evil Spirits."
After hearing my words, everyone exchanged glances. At this point, they wouldn't dare refute me with scientific explanations; even if I said I saw Yama or Bodhisattva, they would believe me.
After running about two hundred meters, I finally stopped and asked Wang Team where No. 7 Old House was.
Wang Team said that No. 7 Old House was still a distance ahead and then took the lead while I followed behind him.
After walking for a few more minutes, Wang Team stopped and pointed to an old house ahead, saying, "We've arrived; this is No. 7 Old House in Liu Family Village!"
Upon hearing this, I hurriedly looked forward and saw that this so-called No. 7 Old House was quite special. How was it special? Because throughout Liu Family Village, all the houses we passed were dilapidated; some had even collapsed. However, this No. 7 Old House appeared old but not ruined; it looked as if someone had been living there all along.
This old house was large; by today's standards, it could be considered a villa. It had a private courtyard that was very quaint and grand; it must have belonged to a very wealthy family back in its day!
At that moment, the red door of the old house number seven suddenly opened in front of us. We were all taken aback, and the atmosphere instantly turned icy. I thought to myself, could this old house number seven be just like the previous wooden cabin?
Thinking this, I looked inside through the open door and was surprised to see that there were lights on inside.
The entire Liu Family Village was eerily silent, dark and devoid of any signs of life, yet this old house number seven was lit up, making it feel completely out of place in its surroundings.
My first instinct was that something was off about this house, and Wang Team's first reaction was to shout, "Is anyone inside?"
After saying that, Wang Team pulled out their guns again and waved to the detectives behind them, signaling everyone to get ready to move.
Seeing that Wang Team was about to rush in, I couldn't help but worry and pulled on Wang Team's arm: "Wang Team, let's be careful. It doesn't seem that simple."
Wang Team replied, "Then Mr. Yi, what do you suggest we do?"
I knew they had come to Liu Family Village because someone had reported something suspicious. There was no way they would agree to turn back without entering the house. So I told Wang Team that I would take the lead and everyone should follow me for safety.
Wang Team accepted my suggestion and ordered everyone to follow me while instructing that if there was any danger, they must ensure my safety.
I smiled; if there really were people inside, I believed Wang Team would keep me safe. But if there were Evil Spirits inside, then their guns might as well be useless scrap metal.
Wang Team left five people outside while the rest followed me as we slowly walked into the old house number seven...
