Chapter Fifty-Three: Elevator Terror
As I ran to the fourth floor, I took out two Spirit Talismans from my bag. I handed one to Mr. Zhu, telling him to use it for protection, while I kept the other in my hand to guard against any sudden attacks from the little girl.
Upon reaching the fourth floor, it was still an unrenovated empty room, dark and eerie. The flashlight illuminated a chilling scene...
To be honest, at this moment, I absolutely believed that the little girl was a ghost. After all, there shouldn't be anyone in this building at night, let alone a little girl. The voice we heard was likely that of the girl who had fallen from the rooftop earlier; she had been playing hide and seek before her death.
Honestly, I couldn't tell if it was because the fourth floor had a heavier Yin Qi or because we knew that the little girl who was playing hide and seek with us was on this floor. Regardless, upon arriving at the fourth floor, I felt even more unsettled than on the third.
Slowly wandering through the empty fourth floor with my flashlight, I found no sign of the little girl. Even the sound of her head hitting the floor had disappeared; the entire fourth floor was eerily quiet. Perhaps it was precisely for this reason that I felt even more anxious.
But for some reason, although the sound of the girl hitting the floor had clearly come from the fourth floor when we were on the third, now that we were on the fourth floor, there wasn't a single ghostly figure in sight.
While I stood there filled with confusion, Mr. Zhu behind me said fearfully, "Sir, why don't we go to the fifth floor? There's nothing here; maybe that little girl isn't on this floor."
I shook my head and replied, "I have a feeling that the little girl is right here on this floor; she’s just hiding in some corner without moving. Perhaps she’s watching us from the shadows right now!"
Upon hearing this, Mr. Zhu shivered violently and began shining his flashlight around frantically.
I wasn't trying to scare him on purpose; it was genuinely how I felt. The girl's voice coming from the fourth floor was unmistakable, and we had run up in less than half a minute—there's no way she could have run away so quickly. Besides, she was supposed to be playing hide and seek, so she should be hiding rather than running.
With my flashlight in hand, we searched every corner of this empty floor but saw nothing at all. At that moment, Mr. Zhu suggested that searching endlessly wasn't a solution and proposed checking other floors instead.
I knew he was scared; staying too long in an empty space only heightened one's anxiety—especially while searching for this little girl. We both had an instinctive feeling that she was watching us from some corner of this floor, yet we couldn't see her. This sensation was enough to make anyone's hair stand on end.
I didn't respond to Mr. Zhu but felt a bit disappointed inside; however, I didn't want to give up just like that. Suddenly, an idea struck me—perhaps I could lure the little girl out.
So I shouted towards the front, "Little girl, stop hiding! I can see you!"
As soon as my words fell, a loud "thud thud" echoed behind us...
This startled both of us because the sound was alarmingly close. If you were to ask me how close it was, I'd say that "thud" sounded right at our heels—what would your reaction be?
To be honest, at that moment, we were both startled and quickly turned our heads to look behind us. Then we saw a little girl in a Red Dress, her head down and feet up, bouncing like a spring as she dashed away from us.
I hurriedly chased after her, but by the time I reached the hallway, the girl had already vanished.
Standing in the long corridor, I desperately searched for the little girl, wondering how she had disappeared so quickly. At that moment, Mr. Zhu nudged me, his hand trembling as he pointed to the Elevator beside me, his face filled with terror...
I glanced at the Elevator and noticed a red arrow pointing upwards above its door, while the floor number displayed was six, and that number was continuously rising. Seven, eight, nine... finally stopping at the Fourteenth Floor...
Who is in the Elevator?
This was the first question that came to both Mr. Zhu and me. Yes, who is in the Elevator? When we entered the lobby, I had seen that the Elevator was stopped at the basement level. But now, it was ascending all the way to the Fourteenth Floor. In this building, apart from Mr. Zhu and me, there were only two security guards sleeping in the lobby.
Could it be those two security guards who took the Elevator to the Fourteenth Floor?
That was absolutely impossible because they were not on patrol; there was no way they would go up to the upper floors. Moreover, two people had died on the Fourteenth Floor, and the guards were aware of that. Although those two guards were relatively brave, I believed that under such circumstances in the middle of the night, even if you forced them, they wouldn't go to the Fourteenth Floor.
Even though we all knew it was impossible for anyone to be in the Elevator, Mr. Zhu still couldn't help but ask me who was in the Elevator.
I said it might be that little girl; she went to the Fourteenth Floor!
When Mr. Zhu heard "Fourteenth Floor," he suddenly shivered and then asked me if we were going up to the Fourteenth Floor.
I thought for a moment; since we were already here, it wouldn't make sense to give up halfway. I said if he was scared, he could wait for me on the first floor while I went up alone.
Mr. Zhu shook his head vigorously and said he would rather face the Fourteenth Floor with me than go down alone.
Just as we were about to head back to the stairwell, Mr. Zhu suddenly said that the Elevator was coming down...
I was taken aback and looked at the Elevator; indeed, as he said, it was descending from the fourteenth floor.
At that moment, Mr. Zhu looked at me in panic and asked why the Elevator was coming down again and who was coming down.
How would I know why the Elevator was coming down again? I had no idea who was inside it; all I knew was to keep my eyes fixed on the Elevator...
The floors descended smoothly without any stops, continuously moving down from fourteen. At this point, neither Mr. Zhu nor I dared to breathe loudly as we stared intently at the floor display above the Elevator door.
Thirteen, twelve, eleven... six, five, four... As the floor display above the Elevator approached our current floor, we held our breath completely; we didn't dare to breathe at all, and even our hearts felt like they were in our throats. Mr. Zhu's grip on my arm tightened more and more...
Just as the Elevator displayed the number "four," in this eerily silent corridor, the Elevator suddenly made a "ding" sound, followed by a creaking noise as the doors swung open instantly...
Although I was mentally prepared and had been telling myself that the Elevator might stop at our floor, I still shuddered when I heard the Elevator's "ding," and my scalp felt like it was exploding.
At the moment the Elevator doors opened automatically, I forced myself to look inside despite the fear deep within me, only to find that the Elevator was empty—nothing inside at all...
Staring at the vacant Elevator, both Mr. Zhu and I breathed a sigh of relief; our hearts that had been in our throats finally settled. However, confusion crept into our minds. Why did this Elevator come down? Why did it stop in front of us by itself?
Mr. Zhu and I exchanged glances, both of us filled with bewilderment and fear. Clearly, these questions were ones no one could answer for us.
"Ding..." The Elevator chimed again as its doors closed automatically, but it did not descend further or rise again; it simply remained stopped on the fourth floor, right in front of us.
Just as we were about to ignore the Elevator and rush towards the stairwell, it made another "ding," and the doors creaked open once more...
This time, both Mr. Zhu and I felt a chill run down our spines as we stared at the wide-open Elevator; the atmosphere felt very strange.
Mr. Zhu said, "Could it be that it wants us to get on?"
Looking at his astonished expression, I didn't answer him; we just stood there staring blankly at each other. Could it really be that it wanted us to get on?
