Chapter Fifty-Two Night Terror 0

This building has a total of eighteen units, with a basement level below ground. Currently, only the sixth and eighth floors are rented out to other companies for office use, while the other twelve floors are completely vacant, making the entire building feel very desolate and lacking in any liveliness. 0

We first went to the sixth floor and took a look around. Although it was daytime and there was a company operating on that floor, it still felt chilly inside, as if a cold air enveloped me. 0

Not finding anything, I took the initiative to ask Mr. Zhu to go directly to the fourteenth floor. According to what he had said earlier, the first woman who committed suicide by hanging did so on the fourteenth floor, and the Master he hired to exorcise spirits also died on that floor. Therefore, that floor should be the most likely place to discover any issues. 0

Mr. Zhu was taken aback and then asked me if it would just be the two of us. 0

I replied, "What’s there to be afraid of? It’s daytime." 0

After thinking about it, Mr. Zhu agreed that nothing should happen during the day, so he took me directly up to the Fourteenth Floor. 0

Strangely enough, as soon as we stepped into the corridor on the Fourteenth Floor, I felt an even stronger chill here; clearly, the Yin Qi was denser than on the other floors. 0

I began checking each room one by one while Mr. Zhu, feeling scared, closely followed behind me without daring to leave my side. 0

After inspecting all the rooms, I found that aside from the heavy Yin Qi, there were no signs of any ghosts. Although ghosts typically do not dare to cause trouble during the day, there was no sunlight in the rooms, and given how thick the Yin Qi was, logically speaking, if there were any ghosts, they should be hiding within this floor. 0

Perhaps because it was daytime, they were hiding away; in any case, I did not see any ghosts in the building. Therefore, I decided to return for now and come back later at night. 0

Knowing from my daytime inspection that the building had extremely heavy Yin Qi, I didn’t dare to be careless. After returning to Mr. Zhu's home, I drew several Spirit Talismans to prevent repeating what happened with that previous Master. After all, I was still unfamiliar with this building and had no idea how many ghosts were inside or what kind they were. I really didn’t want to recklessly put my life at risk. 0

Time passed quickly, and around eleven o'clock at night, I set out for the building. This time Mr. Zhu voluntarily followed me again. I asked him if he wasn’t afraid. He said that if this building wasn’t dealt with quickly and rented out, he wouldn’t be able to pay back his bank loan interest; thus, he would only have one option left—jumping off a building. So if he was going to die anyway, he might as well face it without fear. 0

I gave a wry smile and didn’t refuse him; after all, having more people meant more company. 0

Although the building is located in the city center, it is now deep into the night, and the streets are deserted except for the dim streetlights. Especially in front of the building's plaza, it is shrouded in darkness, and a chilling breeze sweeps through, causing a few pieces of paper to flutter up, creating an eerie atmosphere. 0

In this area, all the surrounding buildings are brightly lit, yet this particular building stands out in its darkness, feeling so out of place. Indeed, according to Mr. Zhu, the reason the companies in this building continue to rent office space here is that the rent is more than half cheaper than elsewhere. However, there is a strict rule for the companies renting here: no overtime work. At five o'clock in the afternoon, all employees must leave the building, and after that, not a single person can be seen inside. Aside from two security guards in their fifties, if anyone else were to be seen, one would have to seriously question whether they were human! 0

This time, it was not Mr. Zhu leading me; instead, I was leading him. Standing across from the empty plaza of the building, I glanced at it. My eyes traveled from the first floor up as I counted the floors: one, two, three... thirteen, fourteen. When my gaze landed on the Fourteenth Floor, I noticed a woman in white leaning against the window, staring at us with a mournful expression. 0

I was instantly startled; my scalp tingled with fear. However, when I looked again, there was nothing visible at that window on the Fourteenth Floor—the woman in white had vanished without a trace. 0

Without lingering any longer, I hurriedly led Mr. Zhu toward the building. Upon entering the lobby on the first floor, I saw two security guards sleeping soundly on the sofa next to the front desk. Hearing our door open startled them awake. Seeing us there momentarily confused them as they asked why we were there so late at night. 0

These veteran security guards do not need to patrol at night and do not have day-night shifts; they usually work an eight-hour shift during the day and come to sleep here around nine at night. 0

I smiled and said we were just checking things out and told them to go back to sleep. After taking two flashlights from the guards—one for each of us—I headed upstairs with Mr. Zhu. The elevator was parked on the basement level; this time we chose not to take it and walked up the stairs instead. 0

There were no motion-sensor lights in the stairwell; we relied solely on our flashlights for illumination. As we walked down the long staircase, all we could hear were our footsteps echoing. 0

We first checked around on the Second Floor but found nothing unusual; however, there was significantly heavier Yin Qi here at night compared to during the day. The surrounding darkness added to an unsettling feeling in my heart. 0

After inspecting the Second Floor, we proceeded to check out the Third Floor. It had not been renovated yet and was still an empty shell; because of its spaciousness, our flashlight beams seemed to stretch endlessly into the darkness. 0

As we walked forward step by step in this vacant floor, our footsteps echoed loudly with a "thud thud thud." The echo was so pronounced that it made me uncomfortable; since I was wearing cloth shoes, I stopped and turned back to Mr. Zhu who was closely following me and said, "Walk lightly; the echoes are too loud. Even if there are ghosts around, they would be scared off by us." 0

Mr. Zhu nodded in agreement. Just as I turned back to continue walking forward, he suddenly grabbed my arm. As I was about to ask him what was wrong, I noticed his expression was quite strange. He whispered softly to me: "Listen..." 0

I wondered what he wanted me to listen for when I finally realized what he meant—I heard footsteps echoing "thud thud thud." At that moment, my scalp prickled with fear because both of us were standing still; how could there still be echoes of footsteps? 0

At this point, Mr. Zhu seemed increasingly frightened as he began gripping my arm tighter and stammered nervously: "Sir... this thud thud sound has been echoing since we came upstairs—could it be that this sound has never come from us?" 0

I didn't answer him because I was still carefully listening to the "thud" sound echoing from the floor above. I didn't respond to Mr. Zhu, and he didn't ask me again. We stood there quietly, motionless, and the surrounding silence made the "thud" sound resonate even more clearly in our hearts. After a while, I looked at Mr. Zhu and said softly, "Do you think that thud sounds like something hitting the floor?" 0

When Mr. Zhu heard me say this, his face turned pale with fright. He glanced at his head and trembled as he held my arm. He pointed to the ceiling above us and said, "The sound of something hitting the floor is... it's coming from above our heads!" 0

Hearing him say this, I closed my eyes and listened closely. Indeed, as he said, the sound was not coming from the third floor but from the ceiling above us. 0

I hurriedly looked up at my ceiling and heard the sound of a head hitting the floor from a distance, slowly coming closer with each thud: thud... thud... thud... 0

After about half a minute, the sound of something hitting the floor grew louder and closer. Both of us held our breath, as if when the next "thud" came, it would directly break through the ceiling above us and a head would drop down. 0

At that moment, the sound finally reached directly above our heads: thud... 0

Looking at where the sound had reached above us, we both dared not make a sound, quietly waiting for each other's reaction. However, after waiting for a while, there was no sound at all; even the previous thudding had disappeared. Suddenly, the entire floor was engulfed in silence. 0

Just then, a little girl's voice suddenly came from above: "Big brothers, I finally found you..." 0

At that moment, we were truly frightened. I felt a shiver run down my spine, and my heart raced. Mr. Zhu was so scared that he cried out and immediately darted behind me, grabbing my arm tightly. 0

After recovering from the shock, I quickly regained my composure and exclaimed: "That little girl is on the fourth floor!" 0

After saying that, I turned around and ran towards the fourth floor with Mr. Zhu, who was trembling in fear… 0
