Chapter 45: The Woman in Red
I immediately held my breath, quietly raising my head to listen to the sounds above me...
"Tap tap tap... tap tap tap..."
I heard footsteps from the attic above, and it seemed to be moving towards the stairs in front of me. I thought, could it be coming down?
With this thought, I curiously stared at the entrance of the wooden ladder leading to the second floor. The sound of movement was very clear, and it was particularly slow; each "tap" felt as if it was stepping on my heart, making it race.
The footsteps stopped abruptly at the ladder. I thought, could that thing be afraid of me and not dare to come down? Feeling puzzled, I kept my eyes fixed on the top of the ladder, constantly guessing who or what was moving upstairs.
After a while, the footsteps started again. Soon, a red shadow swayed a few times above the ladder, and with a "pop," a red embroidered shoe fell from the outer side of the ladder, landing on the first step. I focused my gaze and saw that it was indeed a blood-red embroidered shoe, sending chills down my spine.
You must understand that in this day and age, it was impossible for anyone to wear embroidered shoes, especially in a house that had been uninhabited for many years.
Then, at that moment, another embroidered shoe swayed in the air and fell down, landing on the inner side of the first step. An even more terrifying scene unfolded as I watched those two embroidered shoes alternately walk down the ladder!
One after another, with the left shoe stepping down to the next wooden step while the one behind lifted itself up as if someone was wearing those shoes going down the stairs.
As the embroidered shoes moved, the stairs creaked with a squeaking sound along with that "tap tap tap" of footsteps. My mind exploded; I realized I was seeing a ghost. I hurriedly opened my Heavenly Eye and indeed saw a ghost wearing those embroidered shoes walking!
I saw that she was dressed in bright red bridal attire, adorned with a large red flower on her head, and naturally wearing those blood-red embroidered shoes that were still moving. This was a female ghost with a face as pale as paper, her eyes wide open like cow's eyes, and a long red tongue hanging from her chin, looking extremely terrifying...
Upon seeing this woman in red before me, my heart jumped in fright; I thought to myself that I had encountered an evil spirit!
It is important to know that ghosts can be good or evil. Ghosts that appear in red after death are mostly vengeful spirits, so I dared not let my guard down. It seems this female ghost must be a Hanged Ghost; just look at her Evil Spirit appearance, she is certainly not a good entity. I made a hand gesture and glared at the female ghost, saying, "You bold spirit, instead of going to the Underworld to be reincarnated, you dare to linger in the living realm. Do you not fear that I will send your soul flying?"
Seeing that I dared to scold her, the female ghost was clearly taken aback and stopped her advance.
In Yin-Yang arts, it is believed that when Yang is weaker than Yin, Yin suppresses Yang, which is ominous; when Yang is stronger than Yin, Yang suppresses Yin, which is auspicious. The same applies in Feng Shui; Yang cannot be weaker than Yin, otherwise the house will become too Yin and lead to illness. However, there must also be some Yin present because all things in heaven and earth are composed of Yin and Yang. For example, water in a house represents wealth; although water is Yin, as long as Yang is stronger than Yin, it is auspicious. The same principle applies to ghosts: humans represent Yang while ghosts represent Yin. As long as you let the ghost feel your strong Yang energy, they generally will not dare to approach you for fear of being burned by your Yang fire. This is what is referred to as the Three Flames of the Body; as long as the Yang fire does not extinguish, one typically will not encounter unclean entities. This is also why unlucky or sick people are more likely to encounter unclean things—their Yang energy is too weak.
Similarly, if a person encounters something unclean and becomes frightened, their Yang energy will weaken further, allowing ghosts to approach them. Now, I was deliberately glaring and scolding her to make her retreat.
I originally thought the female ghost would turn and leave, but unexpectedly she suddenly revealed a fierce expression and had somehow produced a thick rope in her hand before lunging at me…
I was startled; damn it, I didn’t expect a vengeful ghost to be so fierce.
However, there was no time for me to curse now because the female ghost was about to pounce on me. The rope in her hand was aimed directly at my neck with extreme ferocity.
I spoke gently to persuade her: "Since you insist on attacking me, then don’t blame me for being ruthless." I formed hand seals and chanted: "Heavenly Spirits! Earthly Spirits! Heavenly Soldiers come forth! Jade Emperor summon your troops to display their might before me! Quickly manifest… Supreme Elder Lord! Urgent Order!"
This technique is called Divine Strike; it is also known as summoning spirits and many practitioners of Yin-Yang arts in folk traditions can perform it. This technique can invoke powerful deities from beyond the heavens who possess immense strength and are impervious to weapons. Even evil spirits must retreat upon seeing them! This Divine Strike is generally used against zombies and similar entities; although its lethality against ghosts isn't very high, ghosts cannot harm me while under its influence. Especially since the female ghost's rope was almost around my neck now, this technique would be most effective.
As soon as I finished chanting, my whole body trembled and I felt an overwhelming surge of power coursing through me. My muscles radiated a metallic taste that made me feel fearless even if someone were to strike me with a knife.
The female ghost's rope came swiftly afterward; I quickly reached out and grabbed her rope tightly. The female ghost was startled that her first attempt did not ensnare me but instead I had caught her soul-catching rope.
"Get lost!" I shouted angrily, clenching my fist tightly and punching towards the female ghost's chest.
"Bang!" My fist struck her chest with a muffled sound, and then the female ghost flew back like a kite with its string cut.
I naturally knew that this "Divine Strike" was merely a protective barrier, but relying solely on it to deal with this ghost was futile. However, even though the opponent was a spirit, killing her without reason would still be a sin. So I first shouted at her, "I am a Yin-Yang sorcerer. If you, a ghost, do not leave quickly, do not blame me for making you suffer endlessly."
To my surprise, the female ghost was completely unaware of her situation. She floated up from the ground and glared at me angrily, saying, "No matter who you are, anyone who enters this house must die!"
Hearing this made me furrow my brows. Logically speaking, she had already witnessed my power; I was no ordinary person. How could she recklessly seek death?
As I pondered this, the female ghost spoke again. She said, "Nearly ten years ago, I swore an oath to kill everyone living in this house. I have waited here for decades, and now that someone has finally entered, no matter who you are, I will make you die!"
This unreasonable ghost was a first for me, so I replied, "I have no grievances with you. Just because I live in this house, you want to fight me? Are you not afraid that I will take your life?"
The female ghost coldly retorted, "Afraid? But what of it? I was locked in this house and died a cruel death by being tied up. At that time, there were many people outside; I screamed for help with all my might, but no one was willing to enter and save me. Therefore, I vowed that anyone who enters this house must pay with their life. And today, you will not escape."
The more she spoke, the more fierce and twisted her expression became.
Now I understood; the reason this female ghost insisted on fighting me was due to her past grievances. When she was alive and someone harmed her, there were people outside who refused to help her when she cried for rescue. This led her to resolve that anyone entering the house would have to die—her resentment had never been released.
Thinking of this made me sigh; it truly seemed like the will of Heaven. Considering that this female ghost was also quite pitiful, I began to think about persuading her and told her that as long as she let go of her resentment, I would be willing to help her transcend and be reborn.
However, she wouldn’t listen at all and charged at me in anger once more.
Seeing her stubbornness made me realize that I could no longer show mercy. If I let her be, it would only harm more innocent people in the future. So I recalled the "Thunder Array" from the Yin-Yang secret arts my grandfather had taught me.
