Chapter 37: Corpse Transformation 0

At this moment, even I, being somewhat naive, understood that the old man before me was not an ordinary corpse but rather possessed by the Paper Figurine. 0

Earlier, I had clearly seen a White Shadow enter the house, which should be the Paper Figurine. Now, there was no sign of that Paper Figurine in the room, but instead, the corpse in the coffin had risen. Considering what he said and the bamboo stick in his hand, along with the tragic appearance of the White Boss, I was certain that this was the Paper Figurine seeking revenge on the living! 0

As he approached me step by step, I could only retreat further because I did not want to become the second White Boss, impaled by a bamboo stick like a Paper Figurine. 0

The corpse, covered in corpse spots, grinned grotesquely, exuding a foul stench, while yellow corpse water dripped continuously from the edges of its black funeral robe. 0

Before long, he had backed me into the courtyard. I glanced outside the Courtyard door and saw the young siblings lying there in shock. I knew I could not retreat any further; if I left the courtyard, those young siblings would be in danger. 0

Thinking of this, despite my fear, I had to steel myself and confront him. Although I had never dealt with a situation involving a Paper Figurine possession before, I had faced ghosts. So I quickly pulled out a copper coin from my bag and recited an incantation: "Under the teachings of our ancestors, let the ghost-repelling coin bring down righteous Yang fire; passed through thousands of hands and shared by millions; let the copper coin turn and burn; above it does not burn heaven, below it burns earth; incinerate all evil spirits and demons into the Underworld!" 0

Copper is inherently Yang in nature, and since these coins have passed through many hands, they carry a strong Yang energy that can suppress evil spirits and demons. By reciting this incantation, my goal was to enhance its Yang energy. 0

After finishing the incantation, the corpse lunged at me. In a hurry, I threw the copper coin at him. However, when it hit him, he merely paused for a moment before grinning smugly and raising his hand to slap at me... 0

Seeing that the copper coin had little effect on him made my heart sink. But it was too late to regret as he was too close. Suddenly, I felt his palm strike my waist hard, sending me crashing to the Ground. 0

His hand felt as hard as a copper plate and packed immense power; it nearly knocked the breath out of me on impact. 0

Having gained momentum from hitting me, he raised the sharp bamboo stick high above his head and charged at me again... 0

This startled me. If he truly stabbed me with that bamboo stick, it would mean my end today. Without caring about my aching waist, I quickly rolled on the Ground, making my way to the other side of the courtyard. As soon as I got up from the Ground, I grabbed a long wooden bench from the yard and held it across my chest, ready to fight for my life. 0

To be honest, I was at my wit's end; using methods meant for dealing with ghosts against him simply wouldn't work. Of course, I realized that he was possessed by a Paper Figurine. The Paper Figurine might have gained some spirit but was not a ghost itself; therefore, it wouldn’t fear strong Yang energy like copper coins. However, if I could force it out of the corpse's body, then I wouldn’t be afraid of him because the Paper Figurine feared me. Even though it had gained some spirit, if I burned it, it would turn to ashes. 0

With this thought in mind, an idea struck me—yes! The Paper Figurine fears fire; that is its nature! Even though it is currently possessing a human corpse, its inherent nature will not change. While it may not fear Yang energy now, it certainly cannot be unafraid of fire! 0

Thinking of this, I hurriedly looked around and then noticed a white lantern hanging above my head. I immediately smashed the wooden stool in my hand against the lantern, causing it to fall. The candle inside instantly ignited the paper lantern. 0

Upon seeing the burning paper lantern at my feet, the corpse that was lunging at me immediately stopped and began to retreat, clearly afraid of the fire burning in front of me. 0

Seeing this, I breathed a sigh of relief; I finally understood its weakness. I wouldn't give it a chance to catch its breath. I picked up the burning paper lantern and threw it at it. Since I was very close, I hit it squarely, and the fireball exploded on its body. Then I heard it let out a "woo" as it screamed and jumped up in fear! 0

Just then, a series of footsteps came from outside the courtyard, followed by a group of villagers rushing in with hoes, ropes, and other tools, clearly called by that couple. 0

When the villagers saw the resurrected corpse bouncing around in the house, howling loudly, everyone was either terrified or astonished, clearly unable to believe what they were witnessing! 0

I knew that if it regained its composure, our small group wouldn't be able to handle it. So I shouted at the villagers who were still in shock, "What are you waiting for? It’s afraid of fire! Go get something to light it up!" 0

Upon hearing this, several villagers quickly ran out of the courtyard to find fire weapons. Meanwhile, some villagers crouched by the wall with hoes in hand, vigilantly watching the resurrected old man. 0

Before long, the corpse regained its composure. At this point, it no longer grinned but glared at us angrily and charged forward with a bamboo stick raised. I quickly picked up a stool from the ground and threw it at him while shouting to everyone, "Quick! Tie it up with ropes! Be careful not to get stabbed by that bamboo stick!" 0

Everyone heard me and although they were all scared inside, they couldn't just ignore such an incident happening in the village. So they immediately pulled their hemp ropes apart and surrounded the corpse! 0

The corpse tried to grab those villagers who were trying to tie it up with ropes while others swung hoes at it. Before long, the corpse was entangled in hemp ropes several times over. 0

At this moment, several villagers pulled on one end of the rope tightly. Two villagers stepped forward to tie a knot, thinking that since the corpse was wrapped so many times it couldn't move. But as soon as they got close, the corpse suddenly charged at one of them, knocking him back six or seven steps and causing blood to gush from his face; he couldn't even get up. 0

Everyone was startled; they hadn't expected it to have such strength. The situation threw everyone into chaos; they couldn't believe that even after being tied up so many times it could still cause such trouble. 0

At this time there were about ten villagers divided into two groups pulling on either end of the rope. Not to mention that this was just a single corpse; even if it were a cow, more than ten people could easily bind it tightly with ropes. 0

Suddenly, that corpse became furious again. It charged straight into one side of the crowd. Although five or six villagers were pulling hard on the other end of the rope, it had no effect whatsoever; the corpse seemed immensely strong and crashed into these villagers, sending five or six of them reeling with dizziness and blood flowing everywhere! 0

I was extremely frightened and shouted for those holding onto the other end of the rope to run quickly because those on this end had become ineffective; they were only inviting death. The villagers understood this too and hurriedly rushed out of the courtyard. 0

At that moment, sparks flew into the sky as I saw those villagers who had gone to find fire returning with torches that had flames shooting up over a foot high in their hands. 0

Seeing the torches, I felt relieved. I grabbed a torch from one of the villagers and rushed towards the corpse. At that moment, the corpse was raising a bamboo stick, preparing to stab the villager lying on the ground. 0

I dashed over, swinging the torch down hard onto its body, and instantly the corpse flew back several meters. 0

The villagers with torches were not idle either; they all charged towards the corpse with their torches raised! 0

The corpse tried to dodge, but the yard was small, and now it was surrounded by the villagers. Then, more than a dozen burning torches were thrust onto the corpse all at once. 0

A strange scream echoed, and then a white shadow flashed by, passing through the wall. The corpse then fell to the ground with a thud and stopped moving! 0

I thought to myself that it was bad; I had forgotten to first splash it with cinnabar juice to seal the paper figurine inside the corpse's body, preventing it from escaping. Now that the paper figurine saw so many torches trying to burn it, it fled again! 0

Cinnabar can seal spirits. If a spirit possesses a corpse and causes it to transform, as long as you seal the corpse's seven orifices with cinnabar, it is said that the spirit cannot escape. 0

Seeing that the paper figurine had escaped, I sighed and told the villagers who were still burning the corpse that there was no need to continue; that thing had run away. 0

The villagers asked me what had caused the disturbance if it wasn't this corpse. 0

I didn't answer them directly; I just told them that a spirit had possessed the corpse and advised the head of the household to bury the deceased as soon as possible. After giving them this advice, I headed out in pursuit of the direction where the paper figurine had disappeared. 0

At this time, the night was still thick with darkness. In the dense night fog, I could only hear my own footsteps... 0
