Chapter 20: Night in the Haunted House
After receiving the key from the Old Village Chief, we hurried to the Villa, hoping to enter before dark to investigate. After all, that Villa was quite eerie, especially considering what we had heard from the villagers about the many deaths that had occurred there. It was best not to enter at night; otherwise, we might attract serious trouble.
As we approached the Villa, Wang Qingshan suddenly stopped. His face turned pale for some reason. I asked him what was wrong, and he seemed to have seen something terrifying. He pointed toward the Villa and exclaimed in panic, "Look... the lights are on in the Villa!"
What? His words startled me. I thought, could it be that ghosts were already stirring before nightfall?
I quickly followed Wang Qingshan's gaze toward the Villa and indeed saw that one of the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor was lit up.
It was dusk; although it was getting dark, it wasn't completely night yet. Some households might just be lighting their lamps at this time. However, this Villa was different; it had been an empty house for years with no one living there. How could there be lights on?
Some might suggest that perhaps villagers had gone inside.
I considered this possibility but knew it was far-fetched. The notorious reputation of this Villa as a haunted place was well-known; villagers avoided it like the plague. Who would deliberately enter such a house? Moreover, we still had the key.
While we were fixated on the window of the Villa's second floor, suddenly a white shadow flashed behind the glass. A person dressed in white leaned close to the window and coldly stared at us.
Instantly, both Wang Qingshan and I were startled, feeling a chill run down our spines from those icy eyes!
Wang Qingshan fearfully said to me, "Is that a person or a ghost? Master, I think we should leave quickly and come back tomorrow at noon."
I looked at Wang Qingshan; he was so frightened that he didn't dare look at the Villa anymore and was trembling all over, clearly too scared to enter.
Initially, I planned to follow Wang Qingshan's suggestion and return first, then come back tomorrow at noon. After all, noon is when Yang Qi is strongest during the day, making it safer to enter such a strange haunted house. However, we had come specifically to find Duan Yang. According to the Old Village Chief, something had happened to the Duan family inside this very Villa. This meant that Duan Yang and his family had likely become ghosts. If we returned tomorrow at noon when Yang Qi is strong, would Duan Yang still appear?
I was constantly beating my heart, making decisions back and forth. In the end, I felt that waiting until noon tomorrow was not as good as going in right now. After all, I was genuinely afraid that Duanyang and the others might not show up tomorrow, and besides, there was someone in the villa right now; perhaps that person was Duanyang?
Thinking of this, I said to Wang Qingshan that I planned to go in and take a look now. If he was scared, he could wait outside the villa for me. I wouldn't take long to come out.
I understood Wang Qingshan; any normal person would hesitate to step into a haunted house after hearing all the villagers describe this place as terrifying. Especially since this empty house had lights on inside, and there was a White-Clad Figure coldly staring at us.
Seeing that I had made up my mind, Wang Qingshan appeared somewhat disappointed and helpless. He sighed, knowing that his master was entering the haunted house to help me, and how could I let my master go alone? Although Wang Qingshan was scared, this was ultimately my matter. Since my master was willing to go in, I naturally had to accompany him.
Wang Qingshan's words surprised me; I didn't expect this local businessman to be so loyal. So I nodded; having someone accompany me into the house would at least ease my anxiety.
Having made our decision, we walked towards the villa.
As we approached the villa, I glanced again at the lit window on the second floor. The light in that room was still on, but the White-Clad Figure had disappeared without me noticing when.
However, regardless of whether that figure was there or not, since we had decided to go in, I wouldn't concern myself with it anymore. Even if that White-Clad Figure turned out to be a ghostly presence, I still wanted to take a look.
Soon, we arrived at the iron gate outside the villa. Just as I was about to take out the key given to me by the old village chief, Wang Qingshan gently pushed the gate open.
I froze for a moment and looked at the gate; there was no lock on it at all. Even the rust I had seen before was gone. The iron gate looked like a brand new one that had just been installed, which struck me as strange.
Wang Qingshan and I exchanged glances, both feeling odd about it. However, neither of us spoke up; perhaps we both thought it was just another strange occurrence. So we opened the gate and prepared to step inside.
But just as we crossed through the iron gate, we were startled into stopping dead in our tracks because suddenly, the front door of the villa on the first floor creaked open by itself...
Initially, we felt something was off when we saw that the iron gate wasn't locked. Our hearts were already racing with anxiety. Now with this sudden occurrence, we were thoroughly frightened. While it didn't scare us enough to turn around and run away, it did make our scalps tingle with fear and our hair stand on end.
Looking at the door again, although it was still open, no one came out. It was clear that the door had opened by itself. This made my heart race, and I thought to myself that this house was indeed as the villagers said, very eerie.
However, I couldn't show any fear now; otherwise, it would only embolden the Evil Spirit inside. So I patted Wang Qingshan beside me, signaling him not to worry too much while I took a step forward towards the Villa's Main Entrance.
As soon as I reached the Main Entrance, I felt a gust of Yin Wind blowing from inside, causing me to shiver. The interior of the Main Entrance was dark and gloomy, and since it was getting close to dusk with all the windows tightly shut and curtains drawn, it was hard to see the layout and situation inside.
Just as we were about to step inside, suddenly a figure floated over and mysteriously appeared in front of us, standing in the shadows of the house with a cold smile directed at us!
This startled us again, sending chills down our spines. I quickly pulled the stunned Wang Qingshan back several steps. The figure that appeared before us was a young man in his mid-twenties, dressed entirely in black. At this moment, Wang Qingshan seemed to have regained his composure and exclaimed in shock at the man standing in the doorway: "Duan Yang!"
Hearing this, even though I had come looking for Duan Yang, I was momentarily taken aback; I didn't expect this person before me to actually be Duan Yang!
I immediately began to prepare for any potential confrontation. However, what surprised me was that upon seeing Wang Qingshan, Duan Yang's cold expression instantly transformed into a warm smile as he welcomed him and asked why Wang Qingshan hadn't called beforehand so he could send someone to pick him up.
In short, suddenly this Duan Yang appeared very enthusiastic. Anyone unfamiliar with the situation would surely think this young man was quite nice.
Indeed, Duan Yang looked no different from an ordinary person; there was no hint of anything unusual about him. However, I couldn't think like that at this moment. After all, this house had been uninhabited for years, and we had visited earlier in the afternoon—the iron gate was rusty and clearly no one lived here. Yet now, as night approached, it seemed like a house where people regularly resided. There had to be some ghostly influence at play or perhaps Duan Yang and his associates were up to something.
Wang Qingshan's face looked extremely pale; it couldn't look worse. Who could blame him? Everyone around here said there were no living people in this house; even if one saw someone, they were likely a ghost. Now Duan Yang had appeared again before Wang Qingshan, still as warm as he had been when he first arrived. How could Wang Qingshan not be scared? Even if he wasn't afraid at that moment, he was clearly bewildered.
Wang Qingshan forced a smile and then looked at me, clearly asking what we should do next.
