Chapter 15 Ghost Messenger Summary
At this moment, the White Impermanence also spoke, saying that Brother Niu was right. What were you messing around with in such a good place as the mass grave? Look at the hornet's nest you've stirred up now. I tell you, this matter has even alarmed King Yan. If it can't be resolved, you'll be the one to suffer.
I felt like crying after being scolded by them, so I just gave up and pleaded my case, saying that I didn't mean to do it. I thought it was just the kiln god causing trouble and the Evil Spirit doing harm, so in order to maintain peace in this place, I wanted to deal with them. But... who knew this was a Chapter of the Mass Grave!
As soon as I finished speaking, a wave of heat suddenly hit me, and then I felt a punch land on my face, knocking me back several steps and almost making me fall to the ground.
After steadying myself, I looked up and saw that the one who hit me was actually the kiln god. At this moment, he and the previous ghost general had come before us, glaring at me fiercely, especially the kiln god, whose eyes seemed to be spitting fire.
"You little Yin-Yang, messing things up without a clue! You couldn't even tell this was a mass grave. This Chapter of the Mass Grave was causing too much trouble back then, which is why they built a kiln here and sent me to suppress the Evil Spirit with True Fire. But you—what did you do? You set up a 'Living Water Formation' to suppress me and released the Evil Spirit here, almost getting me killed! I really want to crush you alive!" The kiln god wanted to attack me further but was held back by Night Wanderer and the two Impermanences.
Hearing what the kiln god said made me feel quite guilty. At that time, I only thought there had been an accident with the kiln and that the deceased workers were causing trouble. I never expected that this place was actually a Chapter of the Mass Grave and that the kiln had been built to suppress the Evil Spirit here. Sigh, I had even set up a Living Water Formation to suppress the kiln god; no wonder he hated me so much.
At this point, Night Wanderer patted the kiln god's shoulder and said, "Kiln god, don't get angry. He was trying to help the people here avert disaster. He meant well but didn't see the danger here; it wasn't intentional. We're all on the same side; don't lose your temper."
"Same side? I'm not on his side! Anyway, this time he's caused a huge disaster; I'm not taking responsibility for him," the kiln god coldly retorted, turning his head away and falling silent.
This left me confused. Same side? Were they referring to me? Thinking about this made me shake my dizzy head, thinking I must be overthinking it.
At that moment, the ghost general with an evil spirit-like face said that things were basically settled here; only some Evil Spirits had escaped and could not be retrieved now. The next steps would have to be handled by us; he would take his leave first.
After saying that, without waiting for anyone's response, he mounted his tall horse and swung his axe. The waiting Yin soldiers followed him as they rushed away, leaving only us standing there in confusion in the entire Kiln.
After the Yin soldiers left, I weakly asked them what to do next.
Heihei Wuchang said, what can we do? Those souls that ran out don’t know how many people they will harm. Sigh, we will have our hands full in the future!
Bai Wuchang told me, with so many Evil Spirits and Vengeful Spirits running around outside, you’re the one who meddles too much. From now on, you’ll be the one running around everywhere. Wherever there are ghosts causing trouble, you’ll go there. In short, you’ve caused this disaster, and we won’t help you bear it. It’s cause and effect; it can only be this way.
I understood some of Bai Wuchang's words. He meant that I would be responsible for dealing with the disturbances caused by ghosts in the human world from now on. It seemed that I wouldn’t have an easy life ahead. I knew what it was like to wander the world; every day was filled with wind and rain, using the sky as a blanket and the ground as a bed, eating wind and sleeping in dew. The worst part was that I was so young and had to wander like this. Wouldn’t my life be ruined? I still wanted to fall in love, marry a wife, and live a normal life. However, I also knew that this mess was caused by me; they didn’t even say they would punish me in the Underworld, which was already considered good luck.
After explaining all this, Heihei Wuchang and Niutou Maimian turned to leave. However, before leaving, Maimian couldn’t help but turn back and throw out a remark: “Don’t get into trouble again!”
Watching them leave, I really wanted to give them the finger behind their backs. Damn it, they were just like some leaders from the World of the Living, coming here without helping at all, only to scold me and then wrap things up with a summary.
However, Yeyoushen was particularly kind, patting my shoulder and telling me not to blame myself too much for this incident. As long as I did what Heihei Wuchang said, the Underworld wouldn’t hold my mistakes against me. Moreover, doing good deeds would also benefit myself.
Yeyoushen's words were quite acceptable. For some reason, when I saw him, I felt he was very approachable, as if we had known each other for many years. Of course, perhaps this feeling arose because he had been speaking well of me?
I sighed. Although my life couldn’t go as I wished, at least after poking this hornet's nest of Wan Zang Pit, I was still alive; I should be content with that. Besides, Yeyoushen was right; in our line of work, we should do good deeds. Forget it; maybe it’s my fate to live off Yin and Yang. First, my parents died young; then I grew up under my grandfather’s Old Yin teachings; after graduating from high school and my grandfather’s death, I was forced to learn about Yin and Yang; now I had to pay for tonight’s mistakes for a lifetime. Perhaps this was all destined.
However, after tonight’s events, I had many questions in my heart. The most urgent one was about my so-called Ghost Seal jade pendant—what exactly was its origin? How could it possess such great power to summon Yin soldiers and generals from the Department of Military Affairs in the Underworld? Why had my grandfather never mentioned its capabilities?
Feeling that Yeyoushen was amiable, I tentatively asked him about my jade pendant—what exactly it was.
Yeyoushen chuckled and simply said that the timing wasn’t right; I would know in due time. Then he claimed he had to go attend to something and disappeared in an instant. Meanwhile, Yaogod had already left before Heihei Wuchang departed to continue suppressing Wan Zang Pit. The entire Kiln returned to tranquility; the wind ceased blowing, no ghosts appeared anymore, and the cold Kiln left only me standing there dazed…
After dawn, I returned to the Shop. I thought that things in Guo Village should be safe now; after all, the Soul-Collecting Tree had been dealt with, the Mass Grave Pit was once again under control by the Kiln God, and Boss Fu had left the kiln, so they would no longer be making bricks there.
The Shop was a small wooden house rebuilt from timber. Reflecting on the events of the past few days, it felt as if I had gone through an incredibly long time. First, Mysterious set my Shop on fire, then I nearly died at the hands of the Soul-Collecting Tree in Guo Village, and afterward, I almost perished in the Mass Grave Pit. Now I had to bear the consequences of all this trouble. Sigh, Guo Village is peaceful now, but I am facing hard times.
The day after returning to the Shop, I started packing up my things in preparation to follow the orders of the Black and White Impermanence and travel around to prevent ghosts and monsters from causing chaos in the world. Just then, a man in his forties or fifties entered the store.
This person was not from our village, nor even from Neighboring Village. Having grown up here, I would recognize anyone from nearby villages even if I didn't know their names.
Seeing this stranger, I continued with my work without looking up and said to him, "This shop is no longer in business; you should go buy paper goods elsewhere!"
To my surprise, he did not leave but instead asked me, "Is your boss here?"
I thought to myself, what is wrong with this guy? Does he think I'm deliberately refusing to serve him and wants to complain to my boss? But isn't that a bit clueless? What kind of small paper shop would have someone else working here?
So I impatiently replied, "I've already said we're not doing business anymore; you should go buy elsewhere. There’s no boss here; I'm the boss."
He frowned slightly and then turned to leave the Shop. Watching his back, I thought he must have assumed I was just a shop assistant and wanted to complain about me.
However, unexpectedly, after leaving the Shop, he looked back at my Shop sign and then walked back inside. Seeing this situation unfold, I wondered what his deal was—did he really want to keep bothering me?
The man approached me again with a distressed expression on his face as if someone owed him three dou of rice and hadn't paid him back. He asked me again, "Is the owner of this Shop named Pan?"
