Chapter Eleven: The Living Water Formation
Based on the teachings of the Eight Methods of Strange Needles, along with the two stories passed down by Old Guo, I roughly deduced some clues. There used to be a kiln in this place where an accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people, which turned this area into a land of Evil Spirits. Now, Boss Fu is rebuilding a kiln here, and kilns require intense fire. The Evil Spirits here are being burned by the kiln fire every day; do you think they will let Boss Fu and his crew off easily? If I hadn't advised them to leave early, it would definitely not be as simple as just one or two deaths. Over time, they might all fall victim to the Evil Spirits.
It was previously mentioned that kiln fire belongs to True Fire, which is a very fierce type of fire. To suppress the kiln fire, at nightfall, I gathered some paper in the workshop and crafted eight paper fish, along with some Paper Horses and ghost generals.
I used blood to ink the eight paper goldfish and drew eyes on them. Then I placed them at the eight directions of this kiln factory according to the Bagua positions. Fish represent water; wherever there are fish, there must be water, and it must be living water. The reason I placed fish here is to use water to suppress the kiln fire.
Of course, in Feng Shui, many households also keep a few goldfish for the same reason of "water." For household Feng Shui, it is essential to conceal wind and gather water; if one can conceal wind and gather water, it is called good Feng Shui. Keeping a few Feng Shui fish in the wealth position of a home aligns perfectly with the idea of gathering water, and water also represents wealth, symbolizing prosperity.
I digressed a bit; let’s get back on track. My paper fish are not ordinary paper fish burned for spirits; they are fish inscribed with symbols and spells and infused with my own Essence Blood. Therefore, after I performed my spell, the eight fish suddenly came to life, with streams of water energy continuously flowing into their bodies—this was the arrival of "living water"!
At this point, it was already dark. To witness the Evil Spirits in this area, I hid inside the workshop.
The workshop had a row of over ten rooms; aside from the first office, the rest were dormitories. Inside there were beds, tables, and chairs. I guessed those things couldn't have come out so early, so I chose a room and lay down on a bed...
I waited until nearly midnight. The moonlight was still bright tonight; a beam of pale white moonlight shone through the window onto the bed. I wondered why there was no movement at all at this late hour. So I got up from the bed to go outside and take a look.
However, just as I was about to get up, I suddenly felt something was off—what was wrong? Because I felt someone blowing cool air into my ear!
A gentle breeze kept blowing towards me. At that moment, when I tried to get up but remained lying on the bed while feeling this coolness, I was startled; my whole body went cold as I thought: could it be that a ghost has appeared?
I hurriedly turned my head to look beside me and nearly screamed in fright—I found that someone had been sleeping next to me without me noticing!
This person had a face as pale as paper and was lying sideways on my bed. Since he was lying on his side, his face was directly facing me with his eyes wide open, staring intently at me...
I was quite startled, almost scared out of my wits, and I rolled off the bed in a panic. You should know that I had been sleeping on this bed all along, and I really had no idea when this guy had come to my side.
As soon as I jumped off the bed, I froze because I recognized this person; he was none other than Boss Fu.
Seeing him lying silently on my bed to scare me made me furious, so I yelled at him, "When the hell did you come back? Why are you lying there without a sound? You scared me to death!"
To my surprise, my shouting frightened him even more. He shrank back, curling up in the corner of the bed, trembling all over. Seeing him like this puzzled me; what was going on?
I began to feel something was off. Boss Fu had clearly left this afternoon, and knowing that there was trouble here, he wouldn't have returned alone. Moreover, the person in front of me looked pale and bloodless; he was clearly a ghost.
Thinking of this, I asked him, "Who are you, and why did you come to my bed?"
For some reason, he seemed terrified of me. When I asked him, he cautiously replied, "This... this is my bed; you are sleeping in my bed."
Upon hearing this and looking at his appearance, it suddenly dawned on me; he must be Fu Boss's Brother.
Fu Boss's Brother died right here. Perhaps the bed I was sleeping on was the one he used in life, which is why he said I was sleeping in his bed. No wonder he looked so much like Boss Fu; it turned out they were brothers.
However, I felt some confusion. His brother had been dead for nearly a month; why was his spirit still lingering here? Hadn't his soul been taken to the Underworld yet?
Thinking of this, I asked him, "You are Fu Boss's Brother, right?"
He nodded and then asked me if I had seen his brother.
I replied, "Your brother has already gone home. Why are you still here?"
He said, "I can't go back," with a face full of melancholy.
Looking at him, it seemed he didn't even realize he was dead, so I said, "You are already dead. Stop clinging to worldly grievances and let go. It's better to head down to the Underworld and be reincarnated soon!"
To my surprise, when he heard this, he suddenly became furious and shouted, "I'm not dead! Get me out of here!"
Seeing that he was still confused, I said, "Dead is dead. Humans have their path, and ghosts have the Ghost Path. Humans and ghosts are on different paths; you must accept this outcome. It's best for you to leave quickly, or you'll become a wandering ghost!"
However, he completely ignored my advice, glaring at me in anger before suddenly dashing out of the work shed.
I sighed. If he continued to linger here unwilling to leave, there would surely be one more wandering ghost added to this place. Such spirits cannot return home or be reincarnated, and they gradually accumulate resentment. Over time, they naturally turn into Evil Spirits and start harming others.
Just as I was lamenting, suddenly there was commotion outside the work shed—sounds of crying, the playing of a suona (a traditional Chinese horn), voices talking, and many footsteps approaching me.
I knew it must be those Evil Spirits causing trouble, so I hurriedly turned and ran out of the work shed. Then I saw Fu Boss's Brother leading a group of ghosts toward me.
Upon seeing them, I thought, "Damn it, they've actually brought reinforcements!"
Before long, they reached me. Fu Boss's Brother pointed at me and said to the group of ghosts behind him, "This is the person who wants to bully me."
I took a closer look and noticed that all of them were dressed in long robes and gowns, clearly not from the present day. Judging by their attire, they must have died many years ago—probably ancient people from before the liberation.
As soon as they arrived, they cornered me at the entrance of the work shed, each one glaring at me like an Evil Spirit. One man said, "Who are you to dare come to our territory? Today we will make sure you never return."
Seeing their fierce demeanor, I knew I couldn't show any fear; otherwise, they would become even more arrogant. So I said, "I am a Yin-Yang Master who specializes in dealing with you wandering ghosts. If you know what's good for you, disperse quickly; otherwise, don't blame the Master for scattering your souls!"
It is said that people tend to bully the weak and fear the strong. In fact, ghosts are no different from humans; if you encounter a ghost and fear it, it will bully you. If you do not fear it, it will instead fear you. This is why some people feel that they have encountered something dirty and will continuously curse and spit; the reasoning is the same.
However, the ghosts before me were not ordinary spirits; they were not the kind that could be scared away with a few harsh words. After hearing my words, they sneered at me, saying, "You little Yin-Yang master are meddling in affairs that do not concern you. Do you even know where this is? Even if the King of Hell himself came, we would not be afraid."
"What a bold claim!" I had never seen a ghost dare to speak so defiantly about the King of Hell. I realized that reasoning with them was futile tonight, so I stepped back to the entrance of the work shed, picked up a paper sword that I had folded earlier in the dark, and began to chant: "Heavenly spirits, earthly spirits, I summon the ghost-slaying sword. From all directions, kill the formless; no law can invade its body. A divine sword made of paper, three parts wood; the righteous energy of heaven and earth adds to its center. No matter how strong the walls are, they will penetrate three parts. I add the power of five thunderbolts; lonely souls and wild ghosts turn to dust. I respectfully invite the Southern Dipper's six stars and the Northern Dipper's seven stars; I obey Supreme Elder Lord Urgent Order..."
The paper Ancestor Master is similar to Master Lu Ban; although it has its own sect, it still worships Daoist Heavenly Masters as Ancestor Master. Broadly speaking, it can be considered part of the Maoshan School.
As soon as I finished chanting the sword incantation, a golden light flashed from the paper sword in my hand, transforming it into a ghost-slaying sword. Although it was still a paper sword, it now possessed righteous Yang energy due to the incantation and could fight against ghosts.
With the enchanted paper sword in hand, I charged forward. The first few ghosts saw that I was armed and hurriedly retreated several steps, clearly afraid of my ghost-slaying sword.
However, I would not give them a chance to regroup. Seeing their fear, I stepped forward with my sword raised and struck at one of the ghosts directly in front of me. The ghost let out a fierce shout as white smoke erupted from its body, and with a scream, it flew several meters away.
Having hit one, I turned my body to confront another ghost ahead. However, that ghost had witnessed the power of my ghost-slaying sword and retreated several meters as I approached, causing me to miss my strike completely. At that moment, another ghost suddenly lunged at me from behind and kicked me hard in the back, sending me flying several meters away.
At this time, those ghosts surged forward again and surrounded me completely...
Although my ghost-slaying sword was powerful, there were simply too many of them. I could handle one or two in front of me but struggled against enemies attacking from behind. The situation took a turn for the worse; I knew that if this continued, even if I managed to kill a few ghosts, I would surely be overwhelmed by them.
As the saying goes: when things reach their extreme, they will reverse. For a moment, I could not control these ghosts; now they had found an opening that ignited their murderous instincts. They surrounded me while howling ominously, clearly intent on killing me here.
