"Liya, do you want to go to Tian Ding Mountain?" Yan Jien asked.
"Sure," Tong Liya nodded.
"Then let's head to Hongting Town first," Yan Jien said.
"Why are we going there?" Tong Liya asked, puzzled.
"I need to find Manager Wu about something, but she has gone back to her hometown," Yan Jien explained.
"What does her going back home have to do with you looking for her?" Tong Liya questioned, confused.
"Deng Kaiwen said that Manager Wu's mother was attacked by wild men," Yan Jien replied.
"Wild men?" Tong Liya exclaimed in surprise.
"Yeah," Yan Jien nodded.
"Is that true?" Tong Liya asked skeptically.
"Deng Kaiwen's apprentice is from Shamen County, Hongting Town, and that's what he told Deng Kaiwen," Yan Jien said.
"Then why are we going to Hongting Town?" Tong Liya inquired.
"I want to see if there really are wild men," Yan Jien stated.
"Huh?" Tong Liya was shocked. "What if we encounter wild men?"
"Then we'll catch one," Yan Jien said confidently.
"Can we really catch one?" Tong Liya worriedly asked.
"Let's give it a try," Yan Jien replied. "You're also a Mutant Human, so you shouldn't be afraid of them."
"But I just completed my evolution..." Tong Liya said hesitantly.
"This is a great opportunity to train yourself," Yan Jien encouraged her.
"Well... okay then," Tong Liya reluctantly agreed.
The two got into the car and drove towards Hongting Town.
Yan Jien wanted to take Tong Liya to Hongting Town not only to help Manager Wu but also to see if he could encounter any mutant creatures. Since completing his evolution, he had become increasingly sensitive to the presence of his kind. Earlier, in the parking lot downstairs at the company, he sensed a strange smell that likely belonged to another Mutant Human. Therefore, he decided to follow this scent and see if he could find that Mutant Human.
Hongting Town is located in the southwest corner of Shamen County, about 20 kilometers from the county seat. The town is small, with a population of around fifty to sixty thousand people. Yan Jien drove through Hongting Town towards Tian Ding Mountain.
"Brother Yan Jien, aren't we supposed to go to Hongting Town?" Tong Liya reminded him.
"We'll go to Tian Ding Mountain first and come back later," Yan Jien explained.
"Why?" Tong Liya asked, still confused.
"You'll know once we get there." Yan Jien said with a mysterious smile.
The car drove out of Hongting Town, winding up the mountain road towards the summit.
"Brother Yan Jien, what are we going to Tian Ding Mountain for?" Tong Liya asked curiously.
"We're going to find wild people," Yan Jien replied.
"Huh?" Tong Liya was surprised.
"Deng Kaiwen said that Manager Wu's mother was attacked by wild people at Hongting Cliff," Yan Jien explained.
"Then aren't we going to Hongting Cliff?" Tong Liya guessed.
"Yes," Yan Jien nodded.
"Then I don't want to go," Tong Liya said timidly.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here, right?" Yan Jien comforted her.
"But..." Tong Liya wanted to say something more but was interrupted by Yan Jien.
"No 'buts.' Since you've chosen this path, you must face it bravely," Yan Jien said seriously.
"Oh," Tong Liya replied, feeling wronged.
Yan Jien sighed and softened his tone, "Liya, I know you're scared, but you need to understand that fear won't solve the problem."
"I know, but I can't control it," Tong Liya said gloomily.
"It's okay, take your time," Yan Jien reassured her. "I believe in you; you can definitely overcome your fear."
"Mm," Tong Liya nodded firmly.
Half an hour later, the car arrived at Hongting Cliff.
Hongting Cliff is a high mountain with an elevation of 1,318 meters, making it the second highest peak in Shamen County. Due to its remote location and inconvenient transportation, it is sparsely populated.
Yan Jien parked the car at the foot of the mountain and led Tong Liya on foot up the hill. It was already evening; the sun was setting in the west, casting a golden glow over the land.
"Brother Yan Jien, look over there; there's a light truck parked," Tong Liya pointed to a barren field on the right.
Yan Jien followed her finger and indeed saw a light truck with two men standing beside it, chatting.
"Lao Song, what do you think the company sent us here for?" one of them asked.
"How would I know?" Lao Song replied.
"I heard from Yang Lao'er that the company is sending him here to find wild people."
"Find wild people?"
"Yeah."
"What do they want to find wild people for?"
"How would I know?"
Hearing this, Yan Jien raised an eyebrow.
"Liya, let's go take a look," Yan Jien said.
"Okay," Tong Liya nodded.
The two walked over.
"Hello," Yan Jien greeted.
"Hi," the two responded.
"What are you doing here?" Yan Jien asked.
"We..." one of the bald men hesitated.
"We're here for a vacation," another long-haired man interjected.
"Vacation?" Yan Jien frowned.
"Yes," the long-haired man nodded.
"Is there anything fun to do here?" Yan Jien questioned.
"We heard the scenery is nice, so we came to check it out," the long-haired man explained.
"Oh," Yan Jien realized, "then I hope you enjoy yourselves."
"Thank you," the long-haired man replied politely.
Yan Jien smiled and continued walking up the mountain with Tong Liya.
After taking a few steps, he stopped again and turned to ask, "Did you just say someone is going into the mountains to look for wild men?"
"You must have misheard," the long-haired man denied.
"I heard it very clearly," Yan Jien insisted.
The long-haired man was left speechless.
"Do you know who that person is?" Yan Jien asked.
"No idea," the long-haired man shook his head.
"What does he look like?" Yan Jien asked again.
"We haven't seen him," the long-haired man shook his head once more.
"Alright," Yan Jien said helplessly.
"Young man, are you also going into the mountains?" the bald man suddenly asked.
"Yeah," Yan Jien nodded.
"Then you should be careful," the bald man warned.
"Why?" Yan Jien asked in confusion.
"Things haven't been peaceful around here lately," the bald man said.
"In what way hasn't it been peaceful?" Yan Jien inquired curiously.
"They say there are wild beasts in the mountains," the bald man replied.
"Beasts?" Yan Jien asked in surprise.
"Yes," the bald man nodded. "Two people have already been injured."
"Is it serious?" Yan Jien inquired with concern.
"One of them is dead," the bald man replied.
"Ah?" Yan Jien was shocked.
"So, I advise you not to go in," the bald man said.
"Thank you for the warning, but we've decided to go in and take a look," Yan Jien insisted.
"Then be careful," the bald man warned.
"Okay," Yan Jien nodded.
After bidding farewell to the two, Yan Jien continued on with Tong Liya.
"Brother Yan Jien, are there really wild people here?" Tong Liya asked curiously.
"I don't know," Yan Jien shook his head.
"Then why did you bring me here?" Tong Liya asked, puzzled.
"I just sensed that there are mutated creatures around," Yan Jien explained.
"Mutated creatures?" Tong Liya was astonished.
"Yes," Yan Jien confirmed with a nod.
"How did you sense that?" Tong Liya asked curiously.
"It's an instinct," Yan Jien said. "You should have it too."
"I don't have it," Tong Liya shook her head.
"You just haven't realized it yet," Yan Jien said.
"When will I be able to realize it?" Tong Liya asked eagerly.
"It's hard to say," Yan Jien replied, shaking his head.
"Oh," Tong Liya said, disappointed.
"Don't be discouraged, take your time," Yan Jien comforted her.
"Mm," Tong Liya nodded earnestly.
