131. "Can you say that again?"
The suspended Zombie King could not hear the sounds from the ground, nor could he see what was happening below. The snowflakes were too dense, and the sound of the energy waves colliding beside him was louder than the sonic boom of a supersonic jet.
The last thing Zombie King saw was a person standing in front of two zombies, with faint sparks flickering on the street.
The Chaos Sphere in his hand had gathered to a height equivalent to two Zombie Kings.
"Look at me." Zombie King strained his eyes, locking gazes with the distant Zombie Queen.
The Chaos Sphere blocked his line of sight, so Zombie King could not see the Zombie Queen who was over ten buildings away. Yet her shockwave had not ceased, continuing to reach him through the building he had penetrated.
However, Zombie King was not afraid of her rays; he knew that the Zombie Queen was watching in surprise at the massive Chaos Sphere in his hands.
"Do you think you have the ability to fight against a deity, Virgil?"
It seemed that Zombie Queen heard his question; gradually, she curled her outstretched fingers, her expression shifting from confusion to panic.
"Why won't you die?" Zombie Queen muttered to herself.
It was time to counterattack.
Zombie King lowered his face, and the Chaos Sphere summoned before his palm was instantly torn into two dark waves of light—one shooting upward and the other plunging downward, completely blocking Zombie Queen's grayish-white shockwave.
From the side, it looked like a grayish-white laser was grinding against a black steel plate. This steel plate seemed indestructible, while the laser struggled in vain.
"Come on, I want you to know the cost of trampling on life!"
The two Chaos Powers before Zombie King's palm began to tighten forward, resembling a large mouth about to close!
"What is that?" Zombie Queen's eyes widened.
"Clang—clang—"
The glass and steel of the buildings were utterly defenseless before the Chaos Power. The two beams converged toward the center, dragging flames and explosions along as they forcefully brought down the building on either side, splitting it in half!
"Buzz—"
The beams showed no signs of stopping; they passed through the first building and charged into the second and third... all the way to where Zombie Queen stood dozens of buildings away!
Meanwhile, her emitted shockwave had long been devoured by Zombie King's Chaos Power.
"Impossible!" Zombie Queen lifted her face, watching as the chaotic beams sliced down toward her head—
And Zombie King pushed his two chaotic beams forward, gliding over the ruins he had just created as he slowly approached her.
Wherever Zombie King went, buildings toppled left and right at his arrival. The massive airwaves engulfed everything nearby; small cars were blown away, rolling and colliding on cracked roads before exploding.
The snow that had accumulated with great difficulty was swept into the air by the wind and dust, fleeing alongside shards of glass. Yet it could not escape the swirling airwaves; soon, the entire block became a hazy blur.
The gray mist continued to spread, engulfing everyone and the corpses in this terrifying scene, where they were all participants.
"What the hell is that?!"
The collapsing buildings were enough to shock the four who were running for their lives, but the tsunami-like shockwave that followed left them no time to be surprised.
In an instant, they were swept up in a torrent of glass shards and snowflakes, while above them, billboards spun with paper banners that were about to be blown away, landing at Ming Juan's feet. After struggling on the ground for a moment, they were sent soaring into the air again.
"Ah—"
Ming Juan screamed.
Liang Muqi and Jiao An each reached out a hand to tightly grip Ming Juan, preventing her from being blown away, while they hunched over, doing their utmost to stay grounded.
Qin Weishan took the lead, half-kneeling in front of the three. His arms came together, and a massive shield unfolded from his gauntlets, blocking the three of them.
The airflow parted around the shield, and debris struck it with a clattering sound.
"Stay behind me!" Qin Weishan shouted back at the three. Jiao An and Liang Muqi pulled Ming Juan closer, tightly protecting her in the center.
The massive waves stirred up by the Zombie King nearly affected a quarter of the city.
Meanwhile, the main battlefield for Fierce Eagle was undergoing a dramatic transformation due to this soul-stirring tide.
"Captain, there's something at two o'clock!"
Before the building collapsed, Blue Face Hero sensed danger. He immediately alerted everyone.
The Celestial Warriors and Spirit Corps looked up; the building had already crashed into an adjacent vacant community. With the last scream of the building before its demise, a tsunami mixed with dust, snowflakes, glass shards, and various debris surged toward them from all directions!
There was no chance of escape!
"Find cover!" Fierce Eagle shouted urgently in the team channel.
The Spirit Corps looked towards George, who scanned around and quickly pointed to a nearby shop.
In the second before the shockwave hit, the Spirit Corps pushed aside a Soulless and leaped into the empty store with George.
Watching as Fierce Eagle and Blue Face Hero activated their ion shields while Aibo turned away to embrace Xu Yicheng with both hands, Madwoman stood frozen in place with her two Chain Spears raised, staring up at the thick smoke roaring towards her from several meters high…
"Sasa!"
Madwoman snapped out of her daze and turned sharply; Fierce Eagle had rushed over and pulled Madwoman behind him just as he raised his shield. The tsunami-like shockwave arrived right on cue.
Fierce Eagle's shield even tilted upward slightly.
"Crouch down and cover your head!" Fierce Eagle shouted.
Madwoman immediately complied but felt that this position was somewhat awkward.
Madwoman covered her head with her right hand while Fierce Eagle held her left wrist. She looked up at Brother Xiaotian's back, gazing dreamily, gradually feeling a hint of warmth...
"Hmm?"
She touched her face. Oh no, why is it so hot?
"How infuriating." Madwoman shook her head, letting the powerful gusts of wind lift her beautiful red hair.
Fortunately, no one noticed her; otherwise, she would have definitely been exposed.
"Wow—"
A swarm of zombies flew through the sky, mingling with various debris. After a few flashed by above The Celestial Warriors and Spirit Corps, they swam through the air like migrating salmon, drifting off into the distance.
In the command room,
"Find cover!"
An Xiaotian's command echoed in the command room, followed by the howling sound that engulfed the entire battlefield along with the gusts of wind. The deafening noise seemed to drown out everyone's eardrums in the command room.
The superior frowned; the sound was unbearable, comparable to a dozen cannons firing simultaneously.
Yet General Jiang remained with his hands behind his back, his eyes fixed on the battlefield swallowed by the gray mist without blinking.
"Do you think they will...?" the superior asked General Jiang.
"Trust them," General Jiang replied heavily, though he was filled with worry.
"They will... they will be fine."
The superior glanced at him, shook his head, and walked away. He could no longer bear to watch.
"I don't know what you're thinking, old Jiang. You've always been a very pragmatic person; I know this better than anyone."
Several other high-ranking officials gathered around the superior, seemingly handing him something.
General Jiang's eyes finally moved; he looked at the superior's back and recalled what he had previously told his subordinates: "Go prepare."
"But sending six young people to fight against a city full of zombies, do you think there's anything more absurd than that?"
General Jiang suddenly turned around; everyone in the command room was surrounding only the superior, and among them was something that made General Jiang feel a sense of crisis.
"There’s a truth I must tell you, old Jiang."
The superior pushed aside the protective cover on the button.
"Ordinary humans are the protagonists of this world. We can save ourselves without any divine protection."
"What are you doing?!" General Jiang charged forward but was stopped by the superior's guards.
"Tick-tock."
"Tick-tock."
...
"Timing begins, take off immediately."
The superior turned around, holding the controller in his hands.
General Jiang then realized that he had been isolated by everyone in the command room; people moved behind the superior, coldly staring at General Jiang.
"Fifteen minutes." General Jiang noticed the numbers on the timer.
"Why bother fighting for so long when we could just drop a Hydrogen Bomb to solve this?"
An officer voiced what the superior did not want to say.
General Jiang's veins bulged, his fists clenched tightly, and his features gradually compressed together; his flushed face could no longer explain the rage boiling within him.
"Shouldn't they be allowed to live?" General Jiang questioned.
"Old Jiang, always remember to think of the bigger picture," the superior said, locking eyes with him, sparks flying between their gazes.
"How am I not thinking of the bigger picture?!" General Jiang slammed his fist down on the control panel, causing the screen to flicker momentarily.
"Do you really think a Hydrogen Bomb can solve it when the enemy's cosmic fleet invades?"
"The cosmic fleet?" Everyone was taken aback by this.
"I'm telling you, you have no idea what is going to happen in the future. This zombie war is just the opening act! For a momentary peace, you are willing to destroy the world's most advanced resistance forces. So I ask you, how will humanity survive?! With a Hydrogen Bomb? A Fusion Bomb? Are you going to keep smashing your own homeland?!"
"This will only accelerate our demise!"
General Jiang was fearless now; if he had a gun, he would gladly shoot down all these beasts in the command room.
He pointed at the superior's nose and continued to shout, "What is the meaning of a Chinese soldier standing here? Isn't it to protect our vast territory and safeguard our people's lives?!"
General Jiang then pointed at the battlefield on the screen where the smoke had cleared.
"They are soldiers too. You don't even want to protect your comrades' lives, letting them fend for themselves? Their lives are like weeds, garbage, disposable waste to you, right?!"
"The Celestial Warriors charge into battle for you, fighting for the future of all humanity, and what do you do? You stab them in the back?"
Everyone fell silent collectively, watching the furious General Jiang.
"Those without gratitude do not deserve to wear our Chinese soldiers' badge!"
Saying this, General Jiang disregarded whether he had authorization and directly connected to The Celestial Warriors' squad channel.
On the battlefield, the smoke had cleared. Blue Face Hero and Fierce Eagle retracted their ion shields, while Aibo turned around. George, along with the Spirit Corps, cautiously stepped onto the glass-strewn pavement.
"Where's the zombie?" Xu Yicheng poked his head out from behind Aibo, gazing at the empty street.
Only the explosions from the battle between the Zombie King and Zombie Queen echoed from above.
"Zzzz..."
Fierce Eagle received two incoming calls simultaneously and forwarded one to Blue Face Hero.
"Hello? Sister Jiao An."
An Xiaotian answered Jiao An's call.
"We might not make it in time," Jiao An said succinctly, glancing at Time. There were only thirteen minutes left until the rescue team would withdraw.
The four of them stood in the underground parking lot of Curry on Commercial Street, troubled as they looked at the refugees huddled together.
"Unless a bus comes to pick us up. An, it's not just one person left behind; there are at least seventy or eighty refugees here," Jiao An pointed out.
She truly felt overwhelmed at that moment.
An Xiaotian pondered, equally at a loss regarding this sudden situation.
"Let me go, Captain." Everyone turned to look at Xu Yicheng.
Xu Yicheng pointed to a double-decker bus parked in the distance and said, "I want to do something; give me a chance."
An Xiaotian wouldn't stop him; it was exactly what he wanted. He immediately nodded in agreement. Aibo set Xu Yicheng down, and Lu Sha followed closely behind him to cover him as he approached the bus.
Meanwhile, Liu Xuan and Nars seemed to be choked by something. Liu Xuan turned around, staring at the horizon against the night sky as if fearing something might rise from there.
"What's wrong?" An Xiaotian unlocked his helmet and asked Liu Xuan, who had reverted back.
"Xiaotian, something's happened."
An Xiaotian tilted his head in confusion.
"In fifteen minutes, a Hydrogen Bomb will be launched and delivered by drone from a distance."
"Can you repeat that?"
Not just An Xiaotian; everyone in The Celestial Warriors' team channel shuddered at the news.
