At eight in the morning, Yan Jien finished his workout on time and took a cold shower, feeling refreshed.
"It's a bit chilly today."
Yan Jien changed his clothes and prepared to go to work.
"Brother Deng, good morning." At the company entrance, Tong Liya approached, carrying breakfast.
"Good morning." Yan Jien nodded.
"Hmm?" Yan Jien noticed something was off with Tong Liya. The usually lively and cheerful girl looked gloomy today, even too lazy to greet him.
"What's wrong?" Yan Jien frowned.
"Nothing." Tong Liya shook her head and walked toward the company.
"..." Yan Jien was speechless.
At nine in the morning, the company held its regular meeting, and Manager Wu introduced a new colleague to everyone.
"This is Pan Dongcheng. He previously worked as a draftsman in our company, then switched careers, and now he's back. Please welcome him."
"Clap, clap, clap." Everyone applauded.
"Hello everyone, my name is Pan Dongcheng. Most of my former colleagues know me, so I won't introduce myself again, but the new employees might not be familiar with me." Pan Dongcheng smiled.
"Pan Ge is so handsome," a female employee whispered.
"He really is quite handsome; he looks a bit like Peng Yuyan," another female employee agreed.
"Alright, Pan Dongcheng, you can sit in that position next to Liya for now. Once the office renovations are done next month, we'll arrange a new seat for you," Manager Wu said.
"Okay, thank you, Manager." Pan Dongcheng nodded.
"Alright, meeting adjourned," Manager Wu announced.
Yan Jien was just about to organize the reference materials he needed to show clients in the afternoon when he suddenly felt someone tap him on the shoulder.
"Brother Deng, hello." Pan Dongcheng walked over.
"Hello." Yan Jien replied calmly.
"The manager asked me to sit in that position, but the wooden floor there is damp and rotten; could you help me switch it?" Pan Dongcheng asked.
"Sure, give me two minutes," Yan Jien nodded.
"Thank you for your trouble," Pan Dongcheng said as he returned to his desk.
"Hello, Liya," Pan Dongcheng looked at Tong Liya.
"Hello," Tong Liya forced a smile.
"My name is Pan Dongcheng. What’s your name?" Pan Dongcheng asked.
"My name is Tong Liya," Tong Liya replied.
"When did you join the company?" Pan Dongcheng asked again.
"Last November," Tong Liya said.
"That means you joined three months after me," Pan Dongcheng smiled.
"Yeah," Tong Liya nodded.
"Where do you live?" Pan Dongcheng asked again.
"I live in..." Tong Liya hesitated.
"I'm new here and would like to learn more about the new developments in Nanquan. If it's convenient for you, could you show me around?" Pan Dongcheng asked.
"I'm sorry, I just finished my internship and I'm not very familiar with a lot of things," Tong Liya said awkwardly.
"That's okay. If you need any help with work, feel free to ask me anytime," Pan Dongcheng offered generously.
"Alright, thank you," Tong Liya expressed her gratitude.
"By the way, where are you having lunch?" Pan Dongcheng asked.
"I'm meeting a friend for lunch," Tong Liya replied.
"Oh, how's the environment at the nearby restaurants? I'm not very familiar with this area," Pan Dongcheng said.
"It's alright," Tong Liya answered.
"Which restaurant do you usually go to?" Pan Dongcheng asked again.
"I..." Tong Liya was at a loss for words.
"Are you going alone for lunch? Why not take me along to get familiar with the place?" Pan Dongcheng invited.
"I have plans with a friend," Tong Liya declined.
"Boyfriend?" Pan Dongcheng asked, surprised.
"No, just a high school classmate," Tong Liya clarified.
"Oh, can I add you on WeChat? I don't have many friends in Nanquan," Pan Dongcheng said as he took out his phone.
"Sorry, I didn't bring my phone," Tong Liya replied awkwardly.
"Where do you live then?" Pan Dongcheng asked again.
"I live in..." Tong Liya hesitated.
"Alright, it's done," Yan Jien said as he walked over.
"Thanks, Brother Deng," Pan Dongcheng expressed his gratitude.
"You're welcome," Yan Jien smiled and returned to his seat.
"What’s up with this guy?" Yan Jien frowned.
Pan Dongcheng made a good first impression; he was handsome and well-dressed, but there was always a hint of slickness in his gaze. Moreover, when he spoke, his eyes tended to wander, especially fixating on the female employees' chests and thighs.
"I hope I'm mistaken," Yan Jien thought to himself.
Ding dong. Yan Jien's WeChat notification chimed.
"Brother Deng, what are you up to?" Tingru Wu messaged him.
"At work," Yan Jien replied.
"Do you have time to handle the transfer procedures today?" Tingru Wu asked again.
"I should have some time," Yan Jien thought for a moment before responding.
"How about we meet at the Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau at one in the afternoon?" Tingru Wu suggested.
"Okay," Yan Jien agreed.
Yan Jien put down his phone and instinctively glanced in Tong Liya's direction. He saw that Pan Dongcheng was still chatting with Tong Liya, but the young girl clearly seemed uncomfortable with Pan Dongcheng's way of speaking, often turning red in the face.
"Let her be," Yan Jien shook his head and continued working.
