At 3:10 AM on the 20th, Li Yanqiu entered the small thicket in the northeast corner of West Lake Park. This was the densest area of trees in the park, with lush vegetation and overgrown weeds, making it difficult for anyone to be spotted once they ventured inside.
"That thing should be nearby," Li Yanqiu thought to herself. She turned on her phone's flashlight and held her stun gun, cautiously stepping into the darkness. Her mood was a mix of tension and anticipation; ever since she discovered the unknown creature's fur last time, she had been searching for its traces. Now that she finally had a lead, she was understandably excited.
"Squeak!" The sound of mice echoed through the thicket from time to time, further convincing Li Yanqiu that the creature was indeed hiding here.
"Captain, where are you?" Han Li sent a voice message.
"I'm in the small thicket. How's it going on your end?" Li Yanqiu replied.
"I just ran into a few young people near the North Gate. From their reactions, that thing shouldn't be around me," Han Li said.
"Well, my locator shows that it's been lingering around the small thicket. It’s probably right inside," Li Yanqiu responded.
"I'll come over now," Han Li said.
"Okay." Li Yanqiu nodded.
After hanging up, Li Yanqiu continued her search, vigilantly scanning her surroundings and not daring to let her guard down for a moment.
Meanwhile, deep within the thicket, a pair of green eyes were fixated on her from an old banyan tree. It was a massive rat, larger than a cat, with shiny fur and sturdy limbs. Its sharp claws glinted like steel knives.
This rat was the mutated Rat King that had escaped from the garbage processing station. It had been living in the park for some time now, preying on other rats, and had become the ruler of this area, with no other animal daring to provoke it.
"Whoosh!" The mutated Rat King stared at Li Yanqiu, a flicker of wariness crossing its eyes as it sensed a threat from the stun gun in her hand.
Though it didn’t know what that object was, it instinctively felt fear. In the past, upon sensing danger, it would have immediately chosen to flee; however, now it did not want to give up on its imminent prey. It hadn’t eaten for several days.
"Rustle rustle!" The mutated Rat King crouched on a branch, fixated on Li Yanqiu as it waited for the perfect moment to strike. The last time it encountered that couple, there had only been one person on the opposing side, so it had acted without hesitation. This time, however, there were two people present, and it worried that it might not be able to handle them both; thus, it remained motionless.
As time passed and Li Yanqiu drew closer to its nest, the mutated Rat King could no longer hold back.
"Swish!"
It swooped down from the tree like a sharp arrow, directly targeting Li Yanqiu.
"Hmm?"
Li Yanqiu heard the sound and instinctively turned around, raising her Stun Gun and pulling the trigger at the shadow behind her.
"Bang!"
Two arcs of electricity shot out, illuminating the night sky.
"Squeak!"
The mutated rat king seemed to understand the power of the stun gun; while in mid-air, it swiped its claws.
"Puff!"
The stun gun was snagged by its claws and flung away.
"What?" Li Yanqiu exclaimed in shock.
She never expected this creature to be so clever, able to catch the moment the stun gun fired and knock it away; it was truly beyond her expectations.
"Bang!"
While Li Yanqiu was momentarily stunned, the mutated rat king had already pounced on her, knocking her to the ground.
"Captain!" Han Li shouted in alarm.
He had rushed over upon hearing the noise, only to witness Li Yanqiu being knocked down.
"Thud!"
Without hesitation, Han Li swung his rubber baton at the mutated rat king.
"Squeak!"
The mutated rat king yelped in pain, angrily roaring as it turned to charge at Han Li.
"Get away!" Han Li yelled.
He swung his rubber baton down at the mutated rat king.
"Bang!"
The rubber baton struck the mutated rat king, sending it flying; however, Han Li also felt his arm go numb from the impact.
"How can this monster be so strong?" Han Li wondered in shock.
"Han Li, how are you?" Li Yanqiu shouted anxiously.
"I'm fine," Han Li shook his head.
"You need to go! This monster is too powerful; staying here will only get you killed," Li Yanqiu urged.
"No, I want to save you," Han Li insisted stubbornly.
"Just go! If you don't leave now, it will be too late," Li Yanqiu pressed.
"No, I want to go with you," Han Li maintained.
"Why won't you listen?" Li Yanqiu said, exasperated.
"Captain, if we work together, we can definitely defeat it," Han Li said.
"You..." Li Yanqiu was too angry to respond.
Bang!
Just as the two were arguing, the mutated rat king charged at them again, slamming into Han Li and sending him flying.
Pfft!
Han Li spat out blood and fell heavily to the ground, losing consciousness on impact.
"Han Li!" Li Yanqiu shouted.
Squeak!
The mutated rat king stepped on Li Yanqiu, its sharp claws tearing through her clothes and piercing into her flesh.
"Ah!" Li Yanqiu screamed in agony as she struggled desperately but couldn't break free.
"Am I really going to die here today?" Li Yanqiu thought in despair.
Bang!
Just as she was about to lose hope, a loud crash echoed through the air.
"Get away!" Yan Jien roared.
