"Pingping, Pingping..."
I called softly.
I heard Pingping huddled in the corner of the room, trembling as she held her stomach.
She was terrified.
I hesitated as I walked over to her, wanting to reach out and hug her, but awkwardly ended up touching the back of my head instead.
After three years of changes, no matter how you look at it, she is now my Sister-in-law.
"Pingping, I'm back. Don't be afraid."
She lifted her head, tears welling in her eyes as she looked at me, then suddenly threw herself into my arms and cried uncontrollably.
"You finally came back! I've been waiting for you so painfully. I'm not a slut, nor did I drunkenly crawl into your brother's bed. I really didn't know. Many times I wanted to end it all, but I couldn't die without seeing you face to face to explain."
My heart ached as I held her tightly, continuously comforting her. "I understand, I understand. It's my fault that you suffered."
Pingping sobbed for quite a while before finally calming down.
She said that ever since that night with the 'prick,' her mother had fallen ill.
Strange men kept jumping into their home, recklessly barging into her mother's room.
When family members tried to stop them, her mother would swing a knife wildly.
During the day, her mother couldn't remember what she had done clearly.
The remnants of memory led her mother to mistakenly believe that these were wild men she had been flirting with everywhere. When Father and Elder Brother explained to her, she accused them of being bewitched by her too, saying that she was possessed by a ghostly prostitute who wanted to drain men's essence or something like that.
"Your brother and father have to fend off those wild men every night while also watching over her. Due to the lack of rest for so long, their bodies quickly deteriorated. Father got hurt from being scratched by Mother and also..."
"What did I get?"
Suddenly, the door was slammed.
My mother was outside, her voice dark and heavy.
Pingping trembled in fear, instinctively grabbing my hand and placing it on her belly.
"Chunsheng, please, save our child."
"Our child?"
"Yes, the one in my belly is yours. I didn't consummate the marriage with your brother. On our wedding night, I waited for you. Even though you were drunk, I knew it was you."
My mind was in chaos.
"Then why didn't you tell me later?"
"How could I tell you? You left, disappeared. How could I reach you?"
Pingping cried, "I thought I would never wait for you again. I thought your mother would torment me to death, but I never expected you to come back."
"Chunsheng, once the child is saved, I will let you decide what to do with me."
"But how can I save you?"
Just then, the door was slammed again.
I pushed against the door with all my strength and shouted at Pingping, "You need to hide!"
Pingping turned and ran towards the Spirit Platform, lifting the spiritual cloth and surprisingly crawling into a small cabinet under the Spirit Table.
As soon as she got inside, my mother burst through the door.
She stood at the entrance, looking at me with a sinister gaze and asked, "Chunsheng, what are you doing?"
"I, I am keeping vigil for my brother."
"Keeping vigil? Is it necessary to hold the door?"
My mother walked up to me, looking ominously into my eyes.
She extended a hand and placed it on my forehead.
Her hand was covered in blood.
The blood was cold, chilling to the bone.
She looked at me and said softly, "Chunsheng, come sleep with me tonight."
"Sleep, sleep, where?"
"Sleep in your room."
"Mother, I, I still want to keep vigil for my brother."
"No, Chunsheng, you must sleep with me tonight."
My mother's hand felt like a vice, gripping my hand tightly.
She pulled me towards the door.
At this moment, I was utterly exhausted.
