The food in our school cafeteria was, as always, mediocre. I stared at the two dishes in front of me, hesitating. My roommate, Yuanyuan, tapped her plate and looked at me with an expression of disbelief. "Come on, you've been mumbling since you walked in, and you still can't make up your mind."
"Shouldn't adults be able to have it all?"
Yuanyuan shrugged her shoulders, looking even more helpless than I felt. "Fine, I guess I can have more meat. Gaining another ten pounds won't matter."
"..."
I turned to look at her and saw her trying hard to puff out her chest, attempting to make herself look a bit heavier.
"How about you just get both?"
I completely agreed and was about to nod when suddenly someone cut in front of me and said to the lady at the serving window, "One order of wontons."
I looked up and saw a tall figure blocking my view, and my mood instantly soured. The person noticed my gaze and turned around; we both froze for a moment as our eyes met.
"It's you?"
"Yes, it's you."
He said, "Sorry, I didn't see you behind me."
Before I could respond, Yuanyuan suddenly exclaimed beside me, "Cui Lidong?"
"Yeah."
Cui Lidong replied, and Yuanyuan was so excited that her hands were trembling. She poked my arm and said, "Chen Qian, it's Cui Lidong!"
I was confused. "???"
Soon after, Yuanyuan realized something was off. "Wait, do you two know each other?"
I shook my head and was about to say no when Cui Lidong suddenly spoke up. "Yeah, we've met a few times."
At that moment, a boy who was with Cui Lidong came over and greeted us.
"Hi, I'm Cui Lidong's roommate, Ma Yiming."
"I'm Chen Qian, and this is Yuanyuan. We're both from the French Department."
After the small talk, our wontons were ready. Cui Lidong and Ma Yiming waved goodbye to us as they left the cafeteria.
I watched their departing figures, somewhat lost in thought, until Yuanyuan tugged at my sleeve, bringing me back to reality.
"What are you thinking about?"
I shook my head. "Nothing much, just feel like that name has a very novel male lead vibe."
Yuanyuan chuckled and leaned closer to whisper, "So, are you interested in him?"
"Not really."
I bit down on my straw and tossed the question back at her, "What about you?"
"I also..."
Before Yuanyuan could finish her sentence, she suddenly exclaimed, "Ah! I remember now, he's that guy, the senior from the Finance Department, Cui Lidong."
I was taken aback. "???"
Yuanyuan continued, "I heard he has a girlfriend now. Sigh, as expected, handsome guys belong to someone else."
The weather had turned colder; in just a few days, winter had arrived.
I stood by the window, gazing at the bare branches outside, feeling a wave of melancholy wash over me.
In recent days, I hadn't run into Chen Qian again. It seemed that after that encounter in the cafeteria, our fate had come to an end.
But this was something I had anticipated. After all, we had been at the same school for three years and had never crossed paths before.
I picked up my phone to send her a message but found myself at a loss for words and ultimately gave up.
Just then, my phone vibrated unexpectedly.
Looking down, I saw a WeChat message from Chen Qian.
Chen Qian: Hi, Cui Lidong, this is Chen Qian.
I paused for a moment and then couldn't help but smile.
What a coincidence; it felt like we were connected in some way.
I typed back: I know.
Chen Qian: Huh?
Me: I know it's you, Chen Qian.
Chen Qian: Oh, I just added you on WeChat. Let's keep in touch more often.
Me: Sure.
Actually, ever since that day, I had been waiting for her WeChat message, but I didn't expect her to add me until today.
