It was an ordinary night, and I was in my study working on a manuscript while Ye Chen was rare to be sitting beside me, sipping coffee.
Suddenly, the sharp ring of a phone broke the silence.
I instinctively looked at Ye Chen, and I noticed his expression change as he quickly walked to the balcony to answer the call.
He spoke in a low voice, but I could hear him clearly: "I understand, don't worry. I'll be there right away."
After hanging up, Ye Chen hurriedly put on his coat. "I have something urgent to take care of. Remember to get some rest."
Watching him rush out, a sense of unease crept into my heart.
Where could he be going at this hour?
Driven by an inexplicable urge, I decided to follow him to find out.
I quietly trailed behind Ye Chen until I saw him turn into a bar. My heart suddenly sank.
Through the glass of the bar, I saw Ye Chen sitting with a woman.
The woman looked very upset, while Ye Chen kept handing her tissues to comfort her.

The next morning, I waited in the living room for Ye Chen to return.
"Where did you go last night?" I asked bluntly.
Ye Chen seemed taken aback for a moment before slowly explaining, "A friend ran into some trouble, and I went to help."
"A friend? More like a girlfriend?" I retorted with a cold laugh.
Ye Chen quickly confessed, "It's my ex-girlfriend Fang Yuan. Her brother was in a car accident and needs emergency surgery."
I looked at him coldly and said, "Why didn't you tell me earlier? Don't I even have the right to know?"
"Nian Nian, I was afraid you would overthink it..."
"What do you mean by overthink? Or do you think I won't overthink it now?" Halfway through my words, I was already choking up, tears streaming down uncontrollably.
Perhaps it was because our first breakup was due to a misunderstanding involving a third party.
By the time the misunderstanding was cleared up, both of us were already exhausted from love and from each other.
Ye Chen tried to comfort me, but I couldn't take in any explanations.
I turned and rushed into the bedroom, slamming the door shut behind me.

I still need time to think about how to face our future.
But things didn't go as planned. That night, Ye Chen discovered the pregnancy test I had hidden in the drawer.
"Gu Nian, what is this?" He held the pregnancy test, his expression complex and difficult to read.
I took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant."
Ye Chen froze in place, and after a while, he came back to his senses. "Is this... is this true?"
I nodded, feeling anxious inside.
I didn't know how Ye Chen would react—would he be happy or...?
"That's great!" Ye Chen suddenly hugged me, his voice filled with uncontainable joy.
"I'm going to be a dad!"
His reaction startled me at first, but then I was infected by his emotions, and my own feelings lightened a bit.

He softly said, "I'm sorry, Nian Nian. I neglected your feelings."
"Please believe me, I will take good care of you and the baby."
Listening to his promise, I felt a mix of emotions.
How I wished I could believe him.
But that late-night phone call and the woman in the bar—was it really just a misunderstanding?
Just as I hesitated about whether to ask for clarification, Ye Chen's phone rang again.
He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression suddenly turned serious. "Hold on, let me take this call."
I nodded slightly, watching him walk to the balcony.
Although Ye Chen lowered his voice, I still caught a few words.
"Fang Yuan, calm down... I know you're very upset, but..."
My heart suddenly sank. So that woman is named Fang Yuan.
Ye Chen hung up the phone and walked back with a complex expression.
He took a deep breath: "Fang Yuan's brother's surgery... failed. His family is going to sue the hospital."
I was stunned: "So what?"
Ye Chen's voice was very low: "I was the lead surgeon."
"I might face a medical malpractice investigation."
I felt a wave of dizziness and had to lean on the table to steady myself.
"I'm sorry, Gu Nian," Ye Chen said, "I'll handle it; don't worry."
I didn't know what to say, only feeling a chill in my heart.
