On Monday morning at 6 AM, the sky was overcast. I woke up from a nightmare, feeling completely restless. I decided to get up, wash up, take a shower, and change into a clean uniform from Second Middle School, checking my backpack to ensure I had everything I needed.
"Xiao Fan, are you up? It's time for breakfast," my father knocked on the door and asked.
"Okay." I opened the door and saw the dark circles under my father's eyes.
"Did you stay up late writing again?" I asked with concern.
"I had a manuscript that was delayed due to moving, and I've been urged to finish it," my father replied as he pulled out a chair and handed me a bowl of millet porridge.
My father is a contracted writer for NB Weekly in China. He doesn't have to go into the office; he just needs to update his articles from home.
At 7:45, Uncle drove me in a black sedan of an unfamiliar brand toward Second Middle School. When we arrived at the school gate, I was surprised to find that the school was just across the street from our neighborhood, and it would take less than ten minutes to walk there. While I was lost in thought, we had already reached the academic affairs office. Uncle helped me complete the registration process just as the class preparation bell rang. He then led me to the third floor of the teaching building to the office of the second-year teachers. He pointed to a female teacher on the left and said, "This is your homeroom teacher, Ms. Zhang."
The female teacher turned around and stood up, smiling as she said to me, "You must be Fanxing! Hello, I'm your Chinese teacher and also your homeroom teacher. Teacher Shen often mentions how excellent your grades are; it's nice to finally meet you in person."
Hearing Ms. Zhang say this made me feel shy, so I scratched my head and replied, "Hello, Ms. Zhang! I'm Yue Fanxing; I look forward to your guidance!"
"Ms. Zhang, I'll leave Xiao Fan in your care; I'm about to start my class," Uncle said as he glanced at his watch.
"Don't worry, Teacher Shen! Fanxing, these are your textbooks for this semester. I picked up a set for you this morning. Take them and follow me to the classroom! We are in Class 2 of Year 2; our classroom is the third one on the right," Ms. Zhang said while handing me the textbooks and picking up her teaching materials for us to head to class.
I quickly stuffed the textbooks into my backpack and followed her through the long corridor. As the class bell rang with a "ding ding ding," I saw the sign for "Class 3 of Year 2." Ms. Zhang signaled for me to wait at the door while she walked into the classroom with her materials. The previously noisy classroom fell silent immediately.
"Good morning, students! Before taking attendance, I have two announcements. The first is that we have a new student joining our class today." Ms. Zhang looked at me and nodded. Taking a deep breath, I walked slowly toward the podium. Facing pairs of curious eyes below, I smiled slightly and said, "Hello everyone! I'm Yue Fanxing; please take care of me!" As I spoke, Ms. Zhang wrote my name on the blackboard, and applause erupted from below. Ms. Zhang raised her hand to signal for quietness and pointed to an empty seat at the second-to-last desk in Group Three saying, "Fanxing, you can sit there for now; we'll adjust seating according to height when school starts next semester." I nodded and walked toward my seat.
As I sat down at my desk, my deskmate curiously sized me up. "Hi! I'm Zhang Yun; please take care of me!" I turned to see a girl with short hair and a fair face who smiled revealing two dimples.
"Hello! I'm Yue Fanxing; nice to meet you," I replied with a smile.
"Can I call you Star? Haha, you're so cute! Your hair is so long! Your skin is so nice..." Before Zhang Yun could finish her sentence, I hurriedly interrupted her: "Zhang Yun, stop talking; the teacher is watching you!"
Zhang Yun quickly looked up at the podium in fright only to see Ms. Zhang teaching while glancing our way repeatedly. Zhang Yun straightened up immediately and didn't dare say another word.
