Because Zhang Dachui was seriously injured, our vacation was extended by two days. During the break, I didn't remain idle. In the secret archive room of the Judgment Alliance, I searched for information alone. As expected, the various pieces of evidence I had submitted earlier were gone. I wanted to check the personnel records of those who had come to assist with Feng Qiu.
A shadow quickly flashed behind the bookshelf. My heart tightened, and I immediately chased after it. The shadow darted between the shelves at an incredible speed, and I could barely keep up. Confusion and fear filled my mind. Who was this person? What did they want?
I chased to the end of the archive room, but the shadow suddenly disappeared. I stood there, panting heavily. When I returned to my desk, the personnel list I had just found was gone, and I looked at the swaying window in front of me. A diversion!
The lead had gone cold, so I had no choice but to see if Dazhu could provide any information.
At the hospital, Zhu Shaohua and Feng Qiu were both there, but Dazhu had not yet woken up.
"Senior."
"Senior, Dazhu is about to wake up." Feng Qiu seemed relieved when she saw me. In their eyes, I had become their core support.
Being relied upon made my heart feel like a sponge soaking up water.
"Um, do you know the people who came with you yesterday, Feng Qiu? How much do you remember?" These individuals must have been problematic; just because there was no list didn't mean I couldn't investigate. There was a reason Feng Qiu could study medicine—her memory was much stronger than average.
"Senior, I don't recognize them."
"Uh! Hahaha!" Just when I had confidence in you, you hit me with a reality check.
I found a place to sit down and grabbed some fruit to nibble on to cover my embarrassment. But the awkwardness was mine alone; they knew nothing.
"Senior, I don't know them. I remember their appearances; I can carve them out with props. But I don't have any props," Feng Qiu said somewhat troubled.
"I have some; here, quickly carve it out." I was overjoyed.
"Wow! No wonder you're a top student; your brain is really amazing. Hahaha."
This truly felt like a bright new beginning.
I held the image, unable to wait for Big Hammer to wake up. "I'll go investigate. You two take care of Big Hammer. Notify me when he wakes up, and let me know if there are any other updates. Don't act alone."
"Understood."
"Okay, senior."
Behind me, I saw Shaohua getting up to close the door. I made a copy of the photo while keeping the original.
"You’re here." A hoarse voice broke the silence, and I saw the expressionless face of the file administrator.
I nodded and stepped forward, handing him the copy in my hand. He took it and began to examine it one by one, while I anxiously waited beside him.
"You want information on these people," the administrator suddenly looked up, his gaze sharp as a knife.
I took a deep breath and answered firmly, "Yes."
He nodded and continued his inspection.
At that moment, hurried footsteps sounded from outside the door. My heart tightened, and I immediately turned around to see several dark figures quickly approaching the archive room's entrance.
"Quick, close the door!" I shouted loudly, but it was too late. The door was violently pushed open, and several people in black uniforms rushed in.
"Who are you?" I yelled angrily, swiftly snatching the photo back from the administrator's hands before turning to run.
The chase began as I darted through the corridors of the Alliance, with those men in black hot on my heels.
I burst out of the Alliance building into the eerily quiet streets under the night sky.
I ducked into a dark alley, leaning against the cold wall and gasping for breath. They caught up to me; instead of fleeing, I smirked and prepared to fight back. If it weren't for my concern about damaging the archive room, I would have run away.
Come on, you scoundrels.
Knowing the other party's tendency to run, I set up my formation while attacking, determined to keep them here. The formation activated, enveloping everyone. I intensified my assault, and the opponents realized they couldn't escape.
Realizing they were trapped, they launched a desperate attack against me. I blocked the strike but was inevitably injured by the shockwave, blood surging within me as I spat out a mouthful of old blood. After calming my energy, I retracted the formation.
I returned to the information room and handed him the photos, my gaze fixed on the door outside. "Hurry up, don't dawdle."
The administrator took the photos and left, soon returning with a stack of documents. Good things come to those who wait; it finally arrived. I happily accepted the materials.
To my surprise, a flash of light appeared beneath the documents, and I quickly dodged. The administrator's attack missed, scattering the documents across the table, and no one bothered to pick them up. He lunged at me again with a dagger in hand.
My unstable energy made it difficult to evade gracefully. Gritting my teeth, I unleashed Dark Element to block for a moment and quickly consumed a potion for rapid recovery. This potion would leave me weak half an hour later.
I was infuriated by his series of small attacks. No one would stop me today. I pulled out all my tools. With the rare Seventh-Level Item, my hands didn't tremble as I used it directly.
I swiftly subdued him, collected the materials according to the catalog, and took him away for confinement. Sitting in a dimly lit room surrounded by files and photos, I drew a relationship map of the individuals in the pictures and pinned it on the wall. The information room administrator was also connected by a line.
Initially, these people seemed unrelated, but as clues converged one by one, connections began to form between individuals. Eventually, three main lines emerged: the Elder Captain of the Guard, the squad leader of Criminal Law Division, and the training group leader.
The Elder's guard team naturally obeyed him. As for the squad leader of Criminal Law Division, if I remembered correctly, he was her brother-in-law. Two years ago, he took over the training of newcomers for a year before stepping down last year.
I gripped these documents tightly; my palms were sweaty from holding them so firmly, and the edges of the paper glimmered coldly under the faint light.
The evidence is undeniable, hanging over me like a sharp blade. I paced through the dimly lit corridor, the overhead lights flickering intermittently.
“Zhou Shu, my good brother...” I murmured to myself, a complex wave of emotions surging within me. We had once laughed in the face of adversity and fought side by side in the alliance; that trust, that camaraderie.
I found the leader's guard and handed over the information. I also informed Ancestor, knowing that with Ancestor’s commitment to him, something would surely be done.
The phone rang; it was Feng Qiu. His voice was urgent and tense: “Zhang Dachui has woken up, hurry!” I immediately set off for the hospital.
Upon my arrival, however, I found the ward empty—Feng Qiu, Zhu Shaohua, and Zhang Dachui were all gone. The room was in disarray, and an ominous feeling enveloped me.
I used Dark Element to search for any possible clues. Suddenly, a voice came from behind me: “Hand over the evidence and tell us where the administrator is.”
I turned to face a group of masked individuals. Their eyes were cold, weapons in hand. I knew I had no choice but to comply with their demands.
“Fine, I’ll do as you ask,” I said slowly, while my mind raced with plans for my next move. They took what they wanted and quickly withdrew. I gathered with Feng Qiu and Zhu Shaohua around the unconscious Zhang Dachui, as Feng Qiu worked to treat him.
Suddenly, Zhang Dachui woke up and shouted, “Get away from me!” Before we could react, he swiftly fled into the distance. Then came a loud bang, and Zhang Dachui’s figure dissipated like smoke.
“No!” Feng Qiu cried out in despair, his face etched with hopelessness.
“Ah!” Anger and regret filled my heart. These people aimed to silence all of us who knew too much; after all, only the dead could keep secrets.
I was filled with sorrow and rage at having hesitated. I unleashed all my Dark Element to gather what remained of the hammer's body; ultimately, only a few shattered bones were left.
We mournfully erected a monument for the hammer. There was no news from the leader; I knew that simply waiting would not bring the truth to light.
I made several copies of the information and sent them to the Elder Council, the leader, the Criminal Law Division, and newcomer training programs—distributing materials everywhere. I even used drones to scatter documents at Alliance Headquarters; I wanted the truth to be known far and wide.
Standing in the square of Alliance Headquarters with a document in hand, I watched as people around me murmured among themselves.
I carried a simple bowl of food into the cell. Zhou Shu sat in the corner with his head buried between his knees. Hearing my footsteps, he looked up with a hint of surprise in his eyes.
“You're here,” he said hoarsely, laced with self-mockery.
I nodded and placed the food in front of him. “This is for your send-off.” I tried to keep my voice calm, but the pain inside surged like a tide.
Zhou Shu forced a bitter smile and reached for the chopsticks. “I’ve had enough of being pushed around.”
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. "Are you making excuses for yourself?" I questioned him, my voice trembling slightly.
He didn't answer, merely continuing to eat his meal in silence. I turned away, ready to leave this suffocating place.
"Wait." Zhou Shu suddenly called out to me.
I stopped in my tracks but didn't turn around.
"Why is it that some people can indulge in luxury while I cannot?" Zhou Shu's words echoed in my mind. I walked out of the cell without looking back. I knew that our brotherhood had been completely severed along with that bowl of rice.
Zhou Shu's trial took place in the Alliance's Supreme Court, and I did not attend. I remembered the days we had spent together, filled with laughter and tears, now all a thing of the past.
The sound of the verdict echoed in the courtroom; Zhou Shu received the punishment he deserved.
I closed my eyes and let a tear fall. People's hearts can change. Those with weak resolve can be eroded by the ups and downs of life. Just like Zhou Shu, in his youth. His passionate blood was ultimately worn away. Just like me, I too had wavered between friendship and justice.
In a lifetime of several decades, how many people still remember their original intentions? And how many can truly uphold them?
