“Zhen Zhuo, answer me.”
I stared at him, giving him no chance to escape.
Zhen Zhuo took a deep breath, as if he had made up his mind.
“Wen Ling is pregnant with my child.”
His voice was low, but it sounded like thunder in my ears.
“But…”
He paused, seemingly weighing his words.
“It was through artificial insemination.”
“My mother has been urging me to divorce you. But I can’t bear to do it, so I didn’t dare tell you.”
“She even threatened to die if I didn’t comply, and I couldn’t just ignore that.”
“But I haven’t betrayed you; I really haven’t been with her.”
“As long as there was nothing physical, it doesn’t count as betrayal, right?”
He looked at me eagerly, hoping for my agreement.
I nodded to show my understanding.
“So, your child is the result of artificial insemination.”
“Your mother is forcing you to divorce me.”
“It’s because of Wen Ling’s child, isn’t it?”
Zhen Zhuo nodded.
“Then…”
“When did you start liking younger girls?”
Zhen Zhuo was taken aback and then smiled bitterly.
“ Yu Zhu, don’t you understand yet?”
“I only wanted to make my mom happy by having Wen Ling undergo in vitro fertilization.”
“The person I have always liked is you.”
I nodded slightly.
"So that's how it is."
"Originally, that boy who loved me deeply has disappeared forever."
When Zhen Zhuo was very young, his father passed away.
He was the only child, raised solely by his mother.
Mao Ruyun had high hopes for him, always wanting him to marry a woman from a prominent family so he could have an easier life.
But Zhen Zhuo fell in love with me.
I had two miscarriages and never got pregnant again after that.
Mao Ruyun disliked me, often mocking me behind my back with sarcastic remarks.
In front of others, she acted as if she cared for me deeply, and everyone praised her as a good mother-in-law.
Only Zhen Zhuo and I knew what a cruel person she truly was.
Zhen Zhuo loved his mother dearly but didn't want me to suffer. For my sake, he chose to live separately from Mao Ruyun.
Because of me, he never met with Mao Ruyun alone; every time I went to visit her, he would accompany me.
We maintained a facade of harmony and lived like this for over a decade.
"Mom is getting older; she can't handle stress."
"So you choose to stress me out?"
I reminded him.
"Have you forgotten? She attempted suicide before we got married."
"She threatened to kill herself to make you break up with me."
"You chose her, so we broke up."
"Don't you remember?"
Zhen Zhuo was stunned, the color drained from his face instantly.
" Yu Zhu..."
He hesitated, unsure of what to say.
"But at that time, she was still young."
"Now she is old, and I can't hurt her anymore."
I suddenly found it very ironic.
"So, you think I am the one hindering your relationship with Mom?"
"Why are both of you pressuring me?"
I looked at him, my eyes filled with confusion.
" Yu Zhu, I'm begging you, don't leave me."
"I would do anything for you."
I looked at him and said word by word:
"Keep the child, fire Wen Ling."
"Or, keep her and the child, and give me up."
Zhen Zhuo struggled for a long time before finally compromising.
"Alright, I will keep the child and fire Wen Ling."
"Can we go back to the way things were?"
He looked at me with a hint of pleading in his eyes.
I smiled and gently leaned into his embrace.
"Of course, we can go back to the past."
I smiled, but my heart felt cold.
How could we possibly go back to the past?
And I finally saw my place in his heart.
