New Bride's Song
Author: Wang Jian
Poem Title: New Bride's Song
Three days into the kitchen,
Washing hands to prepare soup.
Unfamiliar with my mother-in-law's tastes,
I first send my sister-in-law to taste.
This poem, written by Tang Dynasty poet Wang Jian, describes the scene of a new bride starting to cook three days after her marriage, expressing her caution towards her new family and respect for her mother-in-law's dietary habits.
"Three days into the kitchen": This line signifies that three days after the wedding, the bride begins to enter the kitchen, preparing to take on the role of a housewife.
"Washing hands to prepare soup": The bride washes her hands clean and prepares to cook soup, reflecting her serious attitude towards cooking.
"Unfamiliar with my mother-in-law's tastes": The bride is still not familiar with her mother-in-law's preferences and eating habits; here, "mother-in-law" refers to her husband's mother.
"I first send my sister-in-law to taste": Before serving her mother-in-law, the bride lets her husband's younger sister taste the food first to understand her mother-in-law's possible flavor preferences.
The entire poem delicately portrays the bride's adaptation process in her new family and her care and respect for its members.
Story: "The Heartfelt Intentions in the Soup"
1
My name is Xiao Qing, and I have just married a young farmer from a neighboring village.
I have large, bright eyes that often shine with gentle light.
My personality is mild and kind, always wearing a smile.
What I love most is cooking delicious meals for my family; seeing them satisfied fills my heart with joy.
Today is my first day in my husband's home, and I am working hard to adapt to this new environment.
“Xiao Qing, this soup you made is really good,” my mother-in-law says as she drinks the soup, a satisfied smile appearing on her face.
"Yes, sister-in-law, you really put in a lot of effort. This soup tastes even better than the one I made!" Sister-in-law chimed in.
Hearing this made me feel delighted; gaining recognition from family is truly a joyful thing.
"Xiao Qing, how did you make the soup so delicious?" my mother-in-law asked curiously.
"Mother, when I was at home, my mother taught me many ways to make soup. I just followed her methods," I answered modestly.
"Oh, I see! Then you really should thank your mother," my mother-in-law said with a smile.
I nodded with a smile, feeling warm inside.
At that moment, my husband walked in and asked, "What are you all chatting about that's so cheerful?"
"We were talking about the soup Xiao Qing made; it's really delicious," my mother-in-law replied with a grin.
"Is that so? Then I must give it a try." My husband picked up a bowl and took a sip.
"Mm, it's really good. Xiao Qing, you're amazing!" He looked at me with admiration, making me even happier.
"By the way, Xiao Qing, how are you adjusting since you just got married?" my husband asked with concern.
"I'm getting used to it; both Mother and Sister-in-law have been very kind to me," I smiled.
"That's good to hear. If there's anything you're not used to, just let me know. I'll help you," my husband said gently.
I looked at him touched, feeling warm inside.
At that moment, my mother-in-law spoke up: "Xiao Qing, from now on, you should take more responsibility in the kitchen."
