No matter how shocked or incredulous the Inner Sect Disciples were about the outcome of the Deathmatch, time would not stand still; it continued to flow relentlessly. Perhaps soon, this event would be forgotten by many.
In the face of time, everything felt pale and powerless. The only thing one could do was to keep growing stronger. Only when you become powerful enough to not fear time can you truly be carefree.
Looking at the swirling clouds in the distance, Ren Pingsheng felt calm in his heart as he continuously waved the sword in his hand, creating gusts of wind that tore apart the omnipresent mist. They gathered and dispersed, seemingly tireless on both sides.
Suddenly, the mist appeared to be attracted by something, clearing around it. A whirlwind spun like a magnet, drawing everything nearby. It spun faster and faster until it formed a Wind Dragon, seemingly ready to pierce the sky. The sky was visible, the green mountains were visible, and the trees were visible.
Not long after the Wind Dragon dissipated, the mist slowly began to gather again. Everything in the distance became blurred once more, as if what had just happened was an illusion.
"This Gale Sword Technique has reached perfection in its basic sword moves. Even with the High-Level Sword Technique Whirling Winds, I can exert about eighty percent of its power; it's considered a great achievement," Ren Pingsheng said softly as he waved his sword, observing everything happening before him.
Twenty days had passed since the Deathmatch. The outcome had no effect on Ren Pingsheng; he still practiced swordsmanship diligently every day, striving to reach Refining Qi Level Seven or Eight. Even when someone wanted to see him, it was not guaranteed they would meet him.
"I have a feeling that within ten days at most, the Gale Sword Technique will truly reach perfection." It was just a feeling without any basis, but his instincts had never been wrong. "Once my Sword Technique is perfected, I'll go out to Experience; there are often missions from the sect to eliminate evil cultivators or Bandits."
"Fighting Fierce Beasts is effective, but they are too low in intelligence. True Experience comes from life-and-death battles with people; only between life and death can there be greater progress." Ren Pingsheng made up his mind; for someone like him who wanted to grow stronger, battling against others and strong opponents was what he desired.
The next day, instead of practicing, Ren Pingsheng first went to the Library to learn two auxiliary techniques: Gaze Technique and Concealment Technique. The Gaze Technique generally allows one to see through cultivations not exceeding three levels above their own. The Concealment Technique can suppress one's Spiritual Energy fluctuations so that ordinary people cannot detect their cultivation level.
These were essential auxiliary techniques for going out to Experience. Since Ren Pingsheng had decided to go out soon for Experience, he naturally needed to prepare in advance. These auxiliary techniques were relatively easy to practice and could be mastered in two or three days.
"Kid, are you preparing to go out for Experience?" The Elder in Charge of the Library, who had been dozing off, suddenly perked up with bright eyes.
"Yes, since I can't break through my cultivation level for now, I'm planning to go out for Experience in a few days. Do you have any instructions for me?" Ren Pingsheng asked with a smile.
"Any instructions? If you really don't come back, I'll have some peace! You're always disturbing my good dreams," the Elder in Charge of the Library replied grumpily.
"Once I go out and gain some experience, no one will disturb you anymore. You can sleep well every day."
"However, if you leave like this, I will feel a bit lonely. Since you came, no one has helped me organize the books on the first floor. Human hearts are hard to fathom! The most terrifying thing in this world is not the monsters, but human hearts."
"Thank you for the reminder, Elder. I understand and will be careful. When I return, I'll bring you a few bottles of good wine!" Ren Pingsheng said seriously. He kept these reminders in mind.
"Haha, I’ll be waiting for that. It must be good wine; ordinary wine doesn’t catch my eye." The Elder in Charge of the Library yawned after speaking, waved his hand, and laid his head down on the table.
In the following time, Ren Pingsheng focused on practicing Sword Technique and began to pay attention to some tasks issued by the sect to see if there were any suitable ones.
"Great, I've finally mastered the Gale Sword Technique." A hint of joy flashed across Ren Pingsheng's face. After a month of practice, he had completely integrated this Advanced Swordsmanship.
"Next is the matter of experience. Tomorrow I'll go to Bai Shi Tang to see if there are any suitable tasks. I’ll keep going until I break through my cultivation and become an Elite Disciple."
"Little one, I'm going to be away for a while, so don’t run around. Also, make sure to eat well today; there won’t be anyone to roast meat for you for quite some time." Ren Pingsheng smiled as he watched Little White Fox devour its food.
It seemed that the little one understood that tough days were ahead; its little belly was round and full. It even saved some leftover roasted meat in its little nest for tomorrow's meal.
"Hmph, really useless. When I come back, I'll roast some for you." Ren Pingsheng glanced at it before turning to leave; he wouldn’t be back here for a while.
"Ow… ow…" Little White Fox stood by the riverbank, raising its head and calling out twice. It seemed to be bidding farewell or reminding him of something.
The task release hall at Bai Shi Tang was crowded with Inner Sect Disciples, and occasionally there would be a few Elite Disciples as well. They frequently stared at the various tasks posted on the wall, contemplating their own strength and what kind of tasks they should take on. Some were even teaming up for tasks.
"What are you pushing for? Can't you see I'm looking at tasks? Do you want..." Feeling a tap on his shoulder, an Inner Sect Disciple turned around angrily. However, upon seeing who it was, he didn’t dare finish his sentence and reluctantly stepped aside.
"Did you take a task? Why are you out here?" a familiar face asked curiously.
"Don't mention it; I ran into that calamity star. The task can wait," the earlier disciple said helplessly.
"Who did you run into? I can't believe you've become like this." The nearby people looked on with curiosity.
"The one from the life-and-death battle, otherwise I wouldn't have come out like this."
"Wow, that's the one who almost killed Huang Feng, Ren Pingsheng. You're really wise; someone who dares to challenge an Elite Disciple is not someone we can afford to mess with."
"I didn't expect him to come for a mission too. It seems he's preparing to go out for some experience. I wonder what mission he will take." Someone else became interested and watched from a distance.
"I bet he will definitely take a star-level mission. Do you believe it?"
"Do we even need to say that? Missions below star-level are just about gathering herbs or collecting materials from fierce beasts. The contribution points are minimal, so he naturally wouldn't look at them. The key is what star-level mission he will take."
"It shouldn't exceed four stars. You know, although we inner disciples can nominally take missions up to six stars, generally speaking, anything above four stars poses a life-threatening risk. There have been cases before; many have died."
"Right, although four-star missions are dangerous, as long as you're careful, they can basically be completed. Even if you can't finish them, you can still retreat safely. But five-star missions have a fifty percent chance of falling, and six-star missions have an eighty percent chance of falling. He shouldn't be so unwise."
"Unwise? Heh, did you forget about the life-and-death battle? Before the results came out, he didn't seem wise in our eyes either. So don't judge him by our standards; he's someone who can't be predicted by common reasoning."
"There aren't any suitable missions; he can't just randomly pick one, or it defeats the purpose of gaining experience." Ren Pingsheng glanced around and helplessly rubbed his forehead. "How about taking this four-star mission? Although it's simple, at least it has some challenge."
Of course, there were five-star missions available, but they weren't suitable. One required traveling a long distance, taking a month round trip—too much time wasted. Another needed finding a type of alchemical herb called Wangyuehua; who knows when that could be found? If luck runs out, it could waste several months.
"Eh..." Suddenly troubled Ren Pingsheng was taken aback. Not just him; the inner disciples in the hall were all surprised and then began to discuss among themselves.
"A six-star mission has come out; it's truly unbelievable. It hasn't appeared for over half a year." Many inner disciples who knew the situation were astonished upon seeing the blood-red words at the top.
"I heard that Senior Brother Zheng Long, ranked sixth among the inner disciples, has always wanted to take on a six-star mission but has never had the chance. This is a great opportunity! He might even gain some benefits." An inner disciple immediately slipped away, presumably to find someone named Zheng Long.
"Eliminate a group of bandits occupying Dapan Mountain; there are hundreds of them, with four bandit leaders. Two are at the eighth level of Qi Refinement, and the other two are at the ninth level of Qi Refinement. This is a solo mission; cooperation is strictly prohibited, and violators will face severe penalties!"
"Very well, this is the mission. The danger level is considerable, and there is a three-month deadline, but that’s what makes it challenging," Ren Pingsheng murmured with a smile. He then went directly to the elder in charge of issuing missions to accept it.
The elder in charge tried to dissuade him for a long time. There was no way around it; after all, he only had the cultivation level of the seventh layer of Qi Refinement. With such a level, going to confront hundreds of mountain bandits would surely be like sending a meat bun to a dog—once gone, there would be no return.
However, no matter how much the elder pleaded, Ren Pingsheng remained unmoved and ultimately accepted the mission. Then, under the elder's mournful gaze, he turned and left.
"Hey, you there! Stop!" Just as Ren Pingsheng walked out of the hall, someone called out to him.
"You accepted a six-star mission? Hand it over to me! With your level of cultivation, you're just asking for death," said a tall and muscular young man with a fierce expression.
"Sorry, I've accepted the mission. If you want to take it, wait until I fail," Ren Pingsheng replied calmly as he looked at him.
Once a mission is accepted, only after the person who accepted it fails can others take it. The only other way is if the person agrees to transfer it to someone else, but this process has significant restrictions and must be witnessed by the elder in charge of missions.
"You... I know Huang Feng lost to you, but your strength is still far from that of the top ten. I am Zheng Long, ranked sixth; transfer the mission to me."
"I’ve already said I won’t give it up. Don’t think that just because you’re ranked sixth or even first on the leaderboard that I will yield. I have my own mission and no time to chat with you." Amidst the astonished gazes of all the inner disciples, Ren Pingsheng walked away with great composure.
