Gu Xiyue smiled quietly, her eyes gently trembling, causing her eyelashes to flutter as well. Ye Guanmei clearly noticed her unusual demeanor and quickly asked, "What’s wrong with you?"
"Nothing..." Gu Xiyue leaned softly against his shoulder, smiling gently. "I used to be a nurse on the battlefield and have seen that Ruan Shaoshuai... He is quite young but very fierce. Just hearing his name makes my legs tremble."
Ye Guanmei laughed heartily, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes as he said softly, "Ruan Yu was once a local tyrant in the Northwest, but he isn’t anymore. Besides, your status is different now; you are my wife, so there’s no need to fear that Ruan Shaoshuai. Quickly get ready and come with me."
"Master." She straightened her expression, walking slowly with grace. The agate ring on her finger emitted a faint glow under the sunlight, and a light fragrance wafted from her neck. Her eyes sparkled with a hazy look. "Now that I am with you, I naturally have nothing to fear. However, since I am pregnant, everything should prioritize the child in my belly. What if I get startled when going out? How would I explain that to you? So for now, I will stay at home and take care of myself."
Ye Guanmei looked at her beautiful countenance and smiled in satisfaction. Although Gu Xiyue came from a less prestigious background, she was much more sensible than Xia Yixiang. Such a woman may be dull, but she truly deserves the position of his wife.
Gu Xiyue lowered her gaze, her long willow-like eyebrows slightly furrowed. She had been driven out by Ruan Yu and had worked hard to win over Ye Guanmei. While she did want to take revenge on Ruan Yu, she clearly understood the fate of Xia Yixiang.
Without the strength to back her up, it was best to keep to her own duties. Although Ye Guanmei was not a wealthy man, he could still provide for her.
Seeing that she was unwilling to accompany him, Ye Guanmei got into the carriage himself and drove out of the city gate to welcome Ruan Yu. He noticed that Shangguan Shaoyi's name was also on the list of people coming to greet them and felt particularly awkward about this meeting. While he was lost in thought, they arrived at the city gate where he saw Shangguan Shaoyi already waiting there and hesitated whether to step forward and exchange pleasantries.
Shangguan Shaoyi noticed him too and politely nodded but said nothing further.
The military vehicle designated for Ruan Yu appeared in the distance, swiftly colliding toward Shangguan Shaoyi's vehicle. Shangguan Shaoyi was momentarily taken aback and stepped aside. However, Ruan Yu suddenly slammed on the brakes, rolled down his window, and flashed a smile at him. "Shangguan Shaoyi, you dodged quite quickly; if you had been a bit slower, I might have hit you."
Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly. "Ruan Shaoshuai is joking; you couldn't even hit my car, let alone me."
Ruan Yu laughed heartily as he jumped out of the car. Seeing Ye Guanmei there as well, he waved his hand and said, "Oh, General Ye! Long time no see."
The three of them fell silent for a moment, and under the suggestion of Shangguan Shaoyi, they returned to the Command Center. Once seated, Ruan Yu explained the reason for their visit. Jiang Shanghao was preparing to organize an expeditionary Army, with Shangguan Shaoyi as the commander, while Ruan Yu and Ye Guanmei's troops would be at Shangguan Shaoyi's disposal.
After confirming the basic strategy and verifying the deployment time, they each returned home.
As soon as Shangguan Shaoyi stepped through the door, he heard a series of melodious piano notes and saw Cheng Mosu teaching Ling Heng how to play. She wore a serene and elegant smile, her bright eyes gently resting on Ling Heng as she whispered guidance to him. A strand of hair fell across her forehead, accentuating her fair skin. She delicately tucked the hair behind her ear, her rose-colored lips curving slightly.
Ling Heng noticed the noise at the door and became distracted. "Mom, Dad is back! Let's end today's piano practice here!"
Cheng Mosu shook her head with a light laugh. Ling Heng had first insisted on discussing military strategy with Shangguan Shaoyi before going out for ice cream with Feng Yin. In this vast space, only the two of them remained. Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly, leaning back on the sofa. Noticing his fatigue, she couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong? Did something happen again?"
"I'm about to prepare for the battlefield in Southeast Asia, Cheng Mosu. I'm afraid it will be a while..."
"I understand," she said softly, lowering her eyelids. "I won't trouble you; it's just..."
"Just what?"
She shook her head and remained silent. Shangguan Shaoyi knew she must be reluctant. He took the opportunity to pull her into his embrace, holding her delicate fingertips. She slowly traced over the cold yet vibrant medals, her rose-colored lips curving into a light smile.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open with a crash. Ling Heng climbed onto Shangguan Shaoyi's back as if he knew something significant was happening. "Dad, I heard you guys are going abroad to fight?!"
He frowned, unsure where Ling Heng had heard such news. But since it was true, he didn't deny it; he merely raised an eyebrow. Seeing his expression, Ling Heng understood immediately and couldn't hide his excitement. "That's great! Dad, take me with you! I want to see what fighting is like! But don't worry; I'll just stay in the Barracks and won't go anywhere! I promise nothing will happen!"
"Not possible," he coldly replied with three words.
“Mom……” Ling Heng shook Cheng Mosu's arm, pleading with her to agree. Cheng Mosu chuckled lightly and shook her head, “Ling Heng, Battlefield is very dangerous, and the discipline in the Army is strict. If you go, it will only cause trouble for your father. It's better for you to stay at home. If you feel bored, I can take you for a walk in Shanghai.”
“I don’t want to go to Shanghai; I want to go to war!” He sulked, collapsing on the sofa. “I heard the common people outside say that Dad went to the Battlefield when he was very young. Why can’t I go at five years old?”
Shangguan Shaoyi couldn’t help but laugh, “I’ve never heard of a five-year-old going to the Battlefield. Don’t think about it anymore. Feng Yin, take him back to sleep; it’s getting late.”
Feng Yin quickly agreed and took Ling Heng back to his room. Shangguan Shaoyi rubbed his forehead and sighed, “Ling Heng is smart, but he’s just too mischievous.”
Cheng Mosu couldn’t help but smile softly and said, “Isn’t that right?” She slowly uttered those four words but fell silent afterward, feeling a sting in her heart. Shangguan Shaoyi stared at her for a while, his deep gaze seeming to look into her heart. When he saw her eyes drop, he said, “Cheng Mosu, I have to leave soon. What you said about going back to Shanghai is a good idea; at least it’s safe there, and with Mr. Nan and Zuo Wei taking care of you, I feel much more at ease.”
She silently nodded, but no matter what, she wouldn’t let go of his hand.
