Ruan Yu got out of the car and walked straight into the Barracks, with Cheng Mosu following behind, keeping a certain distance from him. All the Soldiers were taken aback when they saw the two enter one after the other. Someone with sharp eyes recognized Cheng Mosu and said, "You are Consort Shangguan, right? Shangguan Shaoying is currently in the Operating Room."
She felt anxious and quickly asked, "How is he doing now?"
The person looked troubled, and she understood the situation well enough. "Please take me to see him."
She followed the Sergeant a few steps forward. Ruan Yu watched her delicate and frail figure, his expression darkening ominously, as if covered by a thick layer of frost. Once she had walked far enough away, he turned his gaze back to the Soldiers who looked puzzled and took out his commission certificate.
Cheng Mosu looked at Shangguan Shaoyi on the hospital bed; his snow-white skin was delicate and beautiful, and a single tear slowly rolled down his face. She reached out to touch his chiseled Handsome Face, her wrist releasing a soft Fragrance as she gently lifted the corners of her lips, her eyes shimmering. With her finely arched brows slightly furrowed, she leaned close to his ear and softly said, "I’m here."
That voice was as light as a feather but lingered through time.
Shangguan Shaoyi's fingers seemed to move slightly, which made the Sergeant feel a bit happier. He quickly said, "Young Mistress, it seems that Young Commander has regained some awareness since you arrived."
“How is he doing now? What did the Doctor say?” She asked while keeping her gaze fixed on Shangguan Shaoyi.
“The Doctor said that Young Commander’s wounds have been bandaged and treated with the best anti-inflammatory medicine. However, he already had an old ailment, and this injury is quite serious. He has been running a high fever; whether he can wake up depends on these next three days.”
She nodded slightly and said calmly, “Thank you. You can go back to your duties; I’ll take care of him here.”
The Soldier nodded and watched as her figure in pure white moved gracefully like a fairy who had strayed into the mortal world. Her elegance and tranquility illuminated the dim room. He turned to open the door, feeling his heart race irregularly; he dared not look at Cheng Mosu again and hurried toward the meeting area of the barracks, only to hear a series of powerful salutes coming from there.
Upon entering, he heard several Soldiers of equal rank say, “This is the new Ruan Yue Shao Shuai. During Shangguan Shaoying’s coma, he will lead us.”
For some reason, he felt a sense of dissatisfaction arise within him.
Ruan Yu's narrow gaze turned towards him, naturally recognizing the dissatisfaction on his face. With a cold smile, she asked without hesitation, "What, do you have any objections to me?"
"I dare not."
Only then did he turn his Eyes away and raise his voice, "I know many people are unwilling to obey me, but my presence here is at General Jiang's command. Now that the Foreign Enemy is at our doorstep, I hope everyone can set aside their prejudices or hatred towards me and join me in fighting against the Japanese Army."
"Yes!"
"Very well!" His narrow Eyes narrowed slightly, a chilling light slowly emanating from them. "Now proceed with the deployment according to my orders! Tomorrow night we will make the Japanese Army taste defeat!"
"Yes!"
The candlelight flickered as dawn broke. Her eyes were clear and serene, resting her chin on her hands as she quietly watched him. The rosy lips on her fair face held a hint of an inscrutable smile, yet they were so gentle and affectionate that even the Nurse who came in to change the dressings couldn't help but be captivated by such a beautiful scene.
She glanced at the Nurse and smiled lightly, "Is it time for a dressing change?"
"Yes," the Nurse nodded and hurried to change Shangguan Shaoyi's dressings while she remained still, quietly sitting there. The Nurse noticed her eyes were red, likely from crying, compounded by a sleepless night. She couldn't help but advise, "Young Mistress, you should rest; otherwise, when the Young Commander recovers, you might fall ill."
She smiled faintly. She knew her body was weak, but under the current circumstances, she was unwilling to miss even a glance at him. She shook her head. Seeing her stubbornness, the Nurse said no more and gently closed the door behind her as she exited.
Cheng Mosu held a cup of hot tea in her hands, sipping gently. Her eyes were deep like still water, showing no ripples at all. Her long black hair cascaded down to her waist like a waterfall, and her features were picturesque. The rarely embroidered flowers on her plain white Qipao could not overshadow her beauty and arrogance; instead, they revealed an underlying tranquility.
She slowly rose and leaned against the desk, looking out at the faint light outside. The dim Sunlight cast a shadow of her slender figure, exuding a bone-chilling coldness.
He pushed the door open and looked at her lonely face. The cold footsteps echoed in her heart, and the sunlight grew brighter and clearer, yet it could not penetrate his desolate heart.
She turned to look at him. He waved at her, and she was momentarily stunned as he walked towards her. Each step was graceful and delicate, like a slender willow swaying in the wind, evoking pity. With every step he took, it was a fragment of forgotten old times, abandoned memories that he remembered clearly, while she had long forgotten.
“Mosu, how is Shangguan Shaoying doing?”
“The doctor said these three days are crucial. If he wakes up, then everything should be fine,” she replied calmly. He nodded in acknowledgment, and for a moment, they fell silent. After a while, he said, “I’m going to raid the Japanese Army tonight. I wanted to come see you before I go.”
Time flowed like water, and she recalled how she had saved him before, only to be let go by him later. Those memories were like fragmented beads strung together into a line, becoming an indispensable part of her life. She raised her water-colored eyes and smiled lightly at him, “Be careful.”
He nodded and said no more, turning around and leaving the room. She turned back to look at the person on the hospital bed who occupied her thoughts. She held Shangguan Shaoyi's hand tightly; their palms intertwined, longing stretching endlessly.
Shangguan Shaoyi slowly opened his eyes. The sudden clarity took her by surprise; his gaze became sharp like a silhouette as he silently stared at her. His complexion remained pale, but the corners of his lips held a hint of a smile. She pinched herself hard to confirm this wasn’t a dream; that dreamlike feeling lingered in her heart. She stared at him blankly as he continued to smile gently at her. Suddenly realizing something, she rushed out to call the doctor.
The doctor and nurse hurried in but found that he had already closed his eyes again with no signs of waking up. The doctor examined him briefly and said to her, “Consort Shangguan, don’t be too anxious. The Young Commander hasn’t woken up yet; perhaps you haven’t slept for too long and are overly hopeful, which caused you to misinterpret things.”
She lowered her eyes in disbelief as she looked at the red mark on his fair skin. She had clearly pinched herself and felt pain; it couldn’t have been a mistake.
The doctor and nurse exchanged glances and shook their heads, thinking that Cheng Mosu was delusional. They advised her to rest well, but she treated their words as mere background noise, stubbornly staying by his side.
