She reached out to wipe away her tears, her gaze gliding over the cheek of the person in front of her. Taking a few steps forward, the floral patterns on her Qipao quietly and beautifully bloomed, while the fringe in her hair swayed with a lovely rhythm. Her steps were filled with a lightness that alternated with sadness.
“Mosu, you really are becoming more and more outrageous, even deceiving your father!” Cheng Yi had long since shed tears of sorrow. Although he felt joy inside, he couldn't help but feel a surge of anger. He tapped her forehead, which was as white as jade, and said, “I really don’t know if you want to drive me to death or make me furious!”
“Dad, please don’t be angry.” Her tearful eyes made her vision blurrier, and her heart tightened even more. “I just don’t want to complicate things. The situation in the country is unstable now, and several prominent families are in constant conflict. While you can stay out of it, I feel like I’m walking on thin ice.”
“Alright, you don’t need to say anymore. In the end, you’re still doing this for that boy Shaoyi!” Cheng Yi gritted his teeth and could only sigh that a daughter grows up too fast. It was only natural for her to prioritize her husband above all else. He looked at his daughter, knowing she had always been graceful and stunning since childhood. She was both elegant and unflappable. When she saw Jiang Yating marry Shaoyi, with her calm demeanor, she certainly wouldn’t compete for beauty or favor.
Cheng Yi waved his hand and said, “Alright, Mosu, sit down. I have something to discuss with you.”
She nodded and sat on the stool, her posture elegant as a painting, without any pretense. Nan Wan discreetly glanced at the father-daughter pair and said, “I’ll step out for a bit; you two take your time.”
“Mr. Nan.” She quickly called out to him. He paused slightly, hearing her soft yet firm voice echoing in the air. “Mr. Nan, please promise me this request. I know you and General Jiang are sworn brothers; surely there’s nothing you wouldn’t share with each other. But I must overly request that you do not tell General Jiang about this matter.”
He smiled lightly; Cheng Mosu’s words were clear and straightforward. Her graceful appearance would not change due to frost or snow nor would it show flattery when making a request, which made him admire her even more. “Don’t worry; when I became sworn brothers with Shaohao, he was passionate about the country and its people. Now that he’s been blinded by power, he no longer catches my eye.”
Cheng Mosu nodded gently. She had always felt that Jiang Shanghao and Nan Wan were too different in character; she didn’t understand how they became sworn brothers. Now thinking back, it turned out Jiang Shanghao had once been full of ambition; it was just that the harsh world had ultimately worn away people's true nature.
Cheng Yi slowly closed the door and looked at his daughter. She still wore that faint smile at the corner of her lips, dressed in a plain Qipao that accentuated her ink-black hair and picturesque features. Her water-colored eyes were cool yet fragrant like an orchid in a quiet valley. Even in such turbulent times, her heart remained untainted by dust, prompting Cheng Yi to sigh: “If your mother could see how you've grown up like this, she would be at peace beneath the nine springs.”
Cheng Mosu blushed slightly and smiled softly. She knew she wasn’t as good as her father perceived; she just clearly understood whom she wanted to protect and whom she cared for deeply. Living without betraying her heart brought her comfort.
“Mosu, with the country in such chaos now, come with me to America; we won’t come back again. Just consider this time as having had an old dream; dreams must eventually end.” Cheng Yi patted the back of her hand. Having regained his daughter made him reluctant to blame her; he could only gently persuade her.
She lowered her eyebrows. For some reason, even though they were thousands of miles apart, she felt that as long as they were under the same sky in the same country, she had nothing to fear. If she truly went abroad, then she and he would be separated by vast oceans, and she would no longer be able to find those fleeting glances. However, at this point, she owed too much to her father, and there was no longer any possibility with Shaoyi, so making a decision was not difficult.
After pondering for a moment, she said, "Alright, let's go to America and never come back. It's just..."
"What is it?"
"I'm leaving in a hurry, and there are some things I didn't bring from Ruan Yu's residence." She gently bit her rose-colored lips, her voice carrying a sense of longing from afar. "I want... to go back and retrieve those things."
"Aren't you afraid that Ruan Yu will imprison you again?!" Cheng Yi glared angrily. "What importance do material possessions hold? I'll ask Mr. Nan to help us buy tickets right away. We should leave before dawn, head back to Shanghai first so you can get some necessities, and then we can take a boat to America."
She fell silent, lost in thought, her lowered eyes filled with reluctance and gloom. The spring breeze brushed against her face, carrying a hint of fragrance. She looked at the blue sky that was beginning to show itself; her water-colored eyes were clear as she softly said, "No, that thing is very important to me. I must get it back."
Ruan Family Mansion.
Ruan Yu closed his eyes in anger, holding a purple-patterned porcelain cup while watching the Longjing tea leaves unfurl in the cup. He was furious and threw the cup away in frustration. Jiexiang felt heartbroken; that cup was of excellent quality and could not withstand such mistreatment from the Young Master.
Cai Pingliang, the deputy officer, stepped in. Ruan Yu's narrow eyes finally showed some spirit as he asked, "What’s the situation?"
"Reporting to the Young Commander, we have searched all over Linxia City but have not found any trace of the Young Mistress."
His expression darkened, his gaze filled with a gloomy determination. "Search again! Does she have wings to fly away? I refuse to believe we can't find her even if we dig three feet into the ground!"
"But Young Commander," Cai Deputy Officer said cautiously while observing Ruan Yu's expression, "many residents have not yet risen at this hour. If we search so ostentatiously for someone, it may have negative repercussions..."
"Damned thing! My woman is missing, and what are these people still sleeping for? Get up and search for her! Whoever finds her will be heavily rewarded!" He was feeling restless, and looking at the shining medal on his chest made him inexplicably angry. He reached out to tear it off when Cai Deputy Officer saw this and knew that Ruan Shaoshuai was about to go mad again, so he hurriedly stepped back.
Ruan Yu suddenly seemed to remember something, a hint of an inscrutable smile appearing at the corner of his mouth, and his narrow eyes instantly became clear. "Cai Deputy Officer, come back!"
"Yes." Cai Deputy Officer silently walked back.
"No need to disturb the peaceful dreams of those commoners; I am not that unreasonable." The smile on his lips grew increasingly sinister, but the pride in his eyes became even more pronounced. His decision changed so quickly that Cai Deputy Officer couldn't help but be taken aback, yet he didn't dare to refute it. He could only respond affirmatively, stand at attention, salute, and retreat.
He lit a cigar and looked out at the dawn breaking outside. His narrow eyes squinted slightly. "Cheng Mosu, you haven't taken the notebook that Shangguan Shaoyi gave you yet; I don't believe you can truly bear to leave it behind."
"Young Master, what are you talking about? Aren't you going to look for Young Mistress?" Jiexiang felt extremely anxious.
"No need; she will come back on her own. I just need to wait here." The corners of his lips curled into a cold smile. "Cheng Mosu, I let you go, but if you come back on your own, I will never let go again."
