"How can I let him go?" His voice was calm, but each syllable was squeezed out from between his teeth.
Shangguan Yiting knelt on the ground, her hairpin loosened and her dark hair falling down, obscuring her expression. Her voice seemed to come from a distant place, "I’m pregnant, with a child from the Zhu Family."
His dark pupils tightened, his knuckles cracking as they echoed coldly in the air. "That is not a child of the Zhu Family; it is a child of the Shangguan Family."
She was taken aback, losing her usual spirited demeanor, her eyes filled with exhaustion and bitterness. "Xiao Lin, I beg you, the child cannot be without a father. Please don’t let him die; let him live!"
"Impossible." His voice was resolute, his gaze fixed on her as he held half a cigar in his hand, his brow furrowed.
Shangguan Yiting bit her lip lightly and managed to stand up from the ground. She knew how stubborn her brother was; once he made a decision, he would not change it. However, during this time spent with Zhu Ye Feng, they had gotten along well enough. Zhu Ye Feng had not treated her poorly, and she absolutely would not allow Shangguan Shaoyi to ruin her happiness.
A faint smile appeared on her pale pink lips, mocking yet desolate. "Cheng Mosu is gone; he took away the kind-hearted you as well. What else can you see in this world besides darkness and hatred?"
He snorted coldly. "You’re right, but the culprit behind Cheng Mosu’s departure is your husband Zhu Ye Feng. Even if he dies, it will be his own fault!"
Shangguan Yiting was stunned for a moment before nodding. The exhaustion and helplessness overwhelmed her. "Fine! You’re ruthless! I tell you, I will never let you harm my husband! Absolutely not!" Her eyes grew increasingly tranquil, revealing no hint of turmoil or thought.
She stumbled out of the room but saw that the sun had already risen, its glaring light melting away the snowflakes that had fallen last night. She glanced back at Shangguan Shaoyi's figure in the room; he was looking at her too. The sharp and cold light in their eyes rubbed against each other in the air, as if war was about to break out.
Somehow, she walked away silently and found herself at Cheng Mosu's room door. She looked up at the door, her finger hovering in mid-air as she hesitated whether to knock. Just then, she heard rustling sounds from inside; the door opened gently, and Cheng Mosu looked at Shangguan Yiting's red-rimmed eyes in surprise and hurriedly asked, "What... happened to you?"
Shangguan Yiting slightly lowered her brow. In the past, she always held her head high; now in such disarray, she had to hide her pride. Her voice could not conceal the sadness and fatigue within it. "Madam Ruan, good morning. There are some things I would like to discuss with you."
Cheng Mo nodded gently, closing the door softly to prevent Shangguan Yiting from seeing Ruan Yu sleeping peacefully on the floor. Fortunately, Shangguan Yiting was preoccupied with her thoughts and did not notice anything unusual. She followed Shangguan Yiting to the tea room, where Xiao Jing prepared a pot of black tea for the two of them before quietly stepping out.
Cheng Mo lightly sipped the fragrant tea, her eyelashes gently lowered, and her water-colored eyes exuded a serene softness that momentarily captivated Shangguan Yiting, who blurted out, "You are Mo Su, right? You are Mo Su, aren't you?"
A sudden jolt ran through her heart; something felt off about Shangguan Yiting today. She glanced at the sunlight filtering through the slats of the blinds and lowered her gaze. "Madam Zhu, I have said many times that my real name is Su Ling. I am now called Ruan Su Ling and am Ruan Yu's wife."
"I know, Madam Ruan." Shangguan Yiting repeated her words softly, as if talking to herself or perhaps speaking for Cheng Mo to hear. "If only you were Mo Su. If Mo Su were still alive, he wouldn't have gone to kill my husband."
Cheng Mo's heart sank in surprise. "He wants to kill Mr. Zhu?"
"Yes." Shangguan Yiting raised her eyes, looking at her with a pleading expression. "I know you are not Mo Su, but you look exactly like him. He ultimately feels differently about you. Madam Ruan, I beg you, please persuade him. Right now, it seems that only your words will reach him."
She collected her thoughts and tightened her grip on the creamy white shawl draped over her shoulders, the long white tassels concealing her heart and hiding her emotions. Lowering her eyes, she gazed at the ink-splattered design on her qipao and gently pushed back a cloud of hair behind her neck. She was no saint; she harbored deep resentment towards Zhu Ye Feng. After being framed twice by him and escaping both times, how could she possibly feel any fondness for Zhu Ye Feng?
"I'm sorry; this matter has nothing to do with me. I cannot help."
"Madam Ruan!" Shangguan Yiting raised her voice slightly. Seeing Cheng Mo's calm smile made her feel even more distant from her. "To be honest, I am already pregnant with a child from the Zhu family."
"You..." Cheng Mo's water-colored eyes shimmered slightly as she turned to look at her. In the sunlight, the light patterns reflected in her eyes revealed that those who were about to become mothers could be both gentle yet strong, fragile yet brave.
Cheng Mo's eyes gradually dimmed; these emotions were something she would never truly understand.
After a moment of silence, she spoke up, "Alright, I promise you this much; however, I can only promise to try my best. Whether Shangguan Shao Shuai agrees or not is another matter."
"Thank you, Madam Ruan." Shangguan Yiting smiled at her gratefully, feeling a flicker of hope rise within her.
She bit her Rose-Colored Lips and gently stepped up the stairs, moving one step at a time to his room's door. Shangguan Yiting did not follow; she understood his intentions. With delicate fingers, she lightly knocked on the cold door, waiting for his response.
One second, two seconds, time slowly passed. After about ten minutes of waiting, she finally heard the cold voice from inside, "Who?"
"...I."
After a moment of silence, the familiar scent of gunpowder grew closer. The door curtain was suddenly pulled open, and that sharply defined Handsome Face appeared before her unexpectedly. She paused for a moment, lowered her gaze, and softly said, "Shangguan Shaoying, I have something to discuss with you."
He stepped aside to let her in. Once she entered the room, he slammed the door shut behind her. The flames in the European Fireplace burned brightly, casting a warm glow on her pale cheeks, making her look pitifully flushed. She raised her eyes to him; the coldness in his dark pupils gradually faded away, and a tenderness that was only revealed to her slowly emerged in his gaze.
"I..." Although he had told her by the lake that he already knew her identity, she still wanted to maintain a sense of distance at this moment. "Shangguan Shaoying, Madam Zhu told me something today, and I would like you to hear my thoughts on it."
He remained silent, his eyes fixed on her without moving. She felt a slight pause and found herself irresistibly drawn into that deep and profound gaze.
