Shangguan Shaoyi walked ahead, stepping on the colorful fallen petals beneath his feet. He took a moment to calm his thoughts, watching the autumn breeze blow by, feeling that without savoring it carefully, this desolate season was about to pass. Just like he had not yet had the chance to take her far away, she had fallen like these fragrant flowers.
"Young Master, I won't go. I want to stay and take care of Young Mistress," Xiao Jing said, following behind him.
"Madam Shen, how can you not go? The invitation to Shen Deputy Officer clearly states to bring your spouse along," Zhu Ye Feng said as he held Shangguan Yiting's hand and approached them. Xiao Jing bit her lip, nodded, and got into the carriage with them.
Shangguan Shaoyi pressed the accelerator, and the scenery rushed by. The evening breeze rustled the leaves, and the twilight appeared vast in his eyes. Miraculously, there were few people on the streets. He recalled the past, remembering the confusion he felt when he first met her.
At President Wang's home, it was bright as day and bustling with voices.
He shook hands with President Wang and exchanged a few casual pleasantries when he heard a delicate female voice calling him from behind. He turned around to meet Jiang Yating's eyes. Today, Jiang Yating wore a Plum Blossom Pattern Qipao, and the high collar accentuated her perfect proportions.
He knew in his heart that this battle was instigated by Jiang Shanghao, aiming to wear down his confidence and patience while undermining the morale of his military. He smiled coldly; Jiang Shanghao's scheme was particularly well thought out, leaving him at a loss.
In front of him, Jiang Yating had her hair styled in an elegant bun with a cherry blossom hairpin, assessing him in his military uniform that exuded charisma. She smiled slightly, "You look quite spirited; it seems this defeat hasn't dulled your edges."
"Someone is doing this on purpose; how could I fall for it?" His eyes radiated a chilling coldness. "Tell your father that opposing me will only lead him to an irretrievable downfall."
Jiang Yating felt dissatisfied and muttered, "The one who lost is clearly you; you're the one who lost the military's trust. How can you say my father will fall into despair?"
"The ambitions of the Japanese Army are evident. As far as I know, they have already invaded the North China Region. General Jiang won't engage in warfare; his subordinates are incompetent. The only ones he can rely on are us old-fashioned warlords. He has already undermined me twice; other warlords will certainly take heed and know that General Jiang is not a magnanimous person. If the Japanese Army launches a full-scale invasion, he will be left helpless."
His analysis was logical and presented perspectives she had not considered before. She tilted her head slightly; outside the window, the fountain was spraying water droplets while the pillars of Crystal Palace intertwined with light. The lights of Crystal Palace cast a brilliant and dazzling glow over him, enveloping him in a layer of brightness.
She wanted to say something more, but she heard hurried footsteps.
"Young Commander!" Shen Mingliang rushed in, barely managing to salute. "I just came from the Command Center. As I was approaching the Shangguan Residence, I suddenly saw the mansion explode!"
"What?!" His dark pupils widened rapidly, his knuckles cracking.
"I caught someone in the act; it was a bomb thrown by a Japanese soldier. I intended to interrogate him further, but he committed seppuku!"
Shangguan Shaoyi's complexion suddenly turned pale as he grabbed Shen Mingliang's shoulder, disregarding the gazes of those around him, and shouted, "Where is Cheng Mosu?!"
"Young Mistress..." Shen Mingliang lowered his voice, the swirling shadows overlapping on Shangguan Shaoyi's anxious handsome face. He couldn't bear to shatter the Young Commander's hopes, the lingering echoes of sorrow resonating in his ears.
He closed his eyes and said with determination, "The room was blown to pieces. I've already sent people to clean up, but... but we did not find Young Mistress."
Jiang Yating listened in shock; was this what they called being alive without seeing someone and dead without seeing a corpse? She had planned to eliminate Cheng Mosu, but unexpectedly, before she could act, the Japanese Army had already taken action. Upon reflection, she realized that the Japanese Army must have investigated Shangguan Shaoyi's residence and lost patience in trying to win him over, resorting to such tactics. However, those Japanese soldiers did not realize that today Shangguan Shaoyi was not at home; they had only blown up an empty house and... her rival.
"Return to the residence!" He squeezed out these words through clenched teeth and hurried away.
Amidst the ruins were several remnants of walls. The collapsed copper walls and iron barriers bore witness to a world indifferent to suffering. He suddenly felt disgusted with this world and his identity.
He joined the soldiers in moving debris aside, hoping to find a trace of that smile in his heart. But he knew very well that in such a large-scale explosion, it was unlikely that Cheng Mosu could have escaped unscathed.
He was unwilling to accept it and did not believe that they could only meet in dreams for the rest of their lives or fulfill their wishes in another life. His fingers had already been scraped until they bled, the bright red droplets solidifying on his fingertips, yet he remained oblivious, still believing that man could conquer fate.
"Young Commander!" Shen Mingliang followed behind him, unable to bear looking into the sorrow of his dark pupils. "Young Commander, please stop digging. I want... I want Young Mistress..."
"Shut up!" He shouted, his tone rising and falling with the sudden downpour, echoing in his heart. He stumbled and sat down on the ground, the passersby around him dared not look at him. The sound of their footsteps turned into an unbearable heartbeat, igniting circles of grief and anger in his ears, crushing what little hope he had left.
He could no longer support the weight of his body. The pressure, pain, unwillingness, and sorrow he had endured during this time surged within him like a tidal wave. Suddenly, his mind went blank, and the pain in his heart exploded, expanding until it engulfed his ink-black eyes in darkness.
"Shaoyi!" Jiang Yating had been hiding in the distance, watching him in such despair, but she could no longer contain her concern for him. She rushed out, the hem of her skirt soaked with the dark raindrops without her noticing.
She supported his arm, looking at his furrowed brows and tightly pressed lips, her heart filled with anxiety. A raindrop slid down his high nose slowly, as if crying for him in farewell, expressing her shock. He brushed off her support and stood up straight, his back rigid, his gaze emanating a cold glare.
"Shaoyi, are you okay?" Jiang Yating asked cautiously, her heart twisting with pain alongside his. She suddenly felt relieved that she hadn't been too harsh on Cheng Mosu; otherwise, she would have been the one to cause him such sorrow.
She was momentarily stunned, not understanding why she suddenly cared about his emotions. Shouldn't she be happy now? Cheng Mosu had been killed by the Japanese; Shaoyi was very likely to marry her for the benefit of their families. But why couldn't she bear to see him sad? Why couldn't she stand to hear his inner screams?
Shangguan Shaoyi clenched his fists tightly, a chill running down his spine as raindrops hit his military uniform, making him appear extremely cold.
"I will make them pay blood for blood!"
