The room was filled with a heavy gloom.
He reached out to pull the Desk Lamp on the table, and the Light cast an antique glow over the desk, illuminating her serene Countenance. Even with her eyes closed, she resembled a pear blossom under the moonlight, or plum blossoms in the snow—so beautiful it took one's breath away.
“Cheng Mosu.” He slowly leaned towards her earlobe, his warm breath lingering on her cool skin. “Do you know? Our army has truly suffered a defeat this time; Feng Province cannot be reclaimed.”
After several days and nights without proper rest, he gradually leaned against her neck, inhaling her fragrance, and fell into a deep sleep.
“Shaoyi.” She called out to him, her voice soft and light, with a gentle smile that quietly radiated her unique fragrance. Her delicate hand rested on his waist. “It’s alright. Jiang Shanghao is too cunning; you are still so young and cannot outsmart him.”
“Now the country is in disarray, and the family is broken. The ambitions of the Japanese Army are glaringly obvious. I only wish to protect my home and country, asking for nothing else, yet he continues to press hard.” His Black as Ink eyes flashed with a hint of sharpness as he pressed his lips tightly together.
Her Rose-Colored Lips curled slightly upward, her Fingertips tracing along his prominent nose and soaring brows. Her voice was fragile yet melodious. “Shaoyi, Jiang Shanghao does not see these things clearly at this moment. He has fought for too long and craved power for too long; naturally, he wants to eliminate you warlords. But I believe he is not a truly wicked person. Once he understands, he will resist external humiliation on his own; you can rest assured.”
“Cheng Mosu, how do you know?” He gazed at her delicate dimples, feeling a stir in his heart as he reached out to caress her silky hair. A faint blush adorned her cheeks, and a gentle smile graced her lips. “I just know.”
The two fell silent, watching the rain fall outside and listening to the soft breaths beside them.
Suddenly startled, he sat up straight, his Black as Ink eyes resting on her sleeping face. With a self-deprecating smile, he knew it was just a dream and should not have expected to wake up.
Holding her hand gently, he whispered, “I only wish to hold your hand and give you all that this life has to offer.”
A soft knock came from outside the door. He turned to respond but did not notice the delicate fingers of the beauty on the bed move slightly as a tear silently rolled down her cheek.
Shangguan Yiting looked at his reddened eyes, filled with pity. "Xiao Lin, you haven't slept well while leading the troops lately. You should go rest; I'll keep watch here for you."
"No need," he replied coldly, with a hint of helplessness. "I'm just talking with Cheng Mosu here. It's still early; I have to attend a banquet at nine o'clock."
Shangguan Yiting was taken aback, suddenly remembering that there was such an event. The banquet was hosted by President Wang, who had specially invited their whole family to attend. She paused for a moment, recalling that the invitation had been brought over by Cheng Mosu before anything happened, and it should be in the drawer. She opened the drawer and indeed found the invitation with a golden border.
Shangguan Shaoyi furrowed his brow and reached out to block her arm, his gaze fixed on the medicine bottles in the drawer. Following his line of sight, Shangguan Yiting was also startled. "Why are there so many medicines? Does Cheng Mosu take all of these every day?"
He flipped through the various bottles, his confusion growing deeper. On the day Cheng Mosu had an incident, he had been busy socializing and hadn't noticed anyone plotting anything. In hindsight, he couldn't figure out any clues. However, he didn't believe that Cheng Mosu would take so many medicines for no reason, leading to the current situation.
"Let's keep these medicines for now. Tomorrow, we'll ask Doctor to come and identify them. If we can find out the cause of the illness, we can treat it properly."
Shangguan Yiting nodded in agreement and put away the medicine bottles. A pair of dark eyes flashed outside the door, peering into the room. Shangguan Shaoyi, ever vigilant, gripped his handgun tightly, ready to pull the trigger at the door.
"It's me." Zhu Ye Feng pushed the door open and raised his hand helplessly. "I just wanted to ask when we're leaving since President Wang invited me too. I saw you two chatting happily and didn't want to interrupt."
He paused, feeling that Zhu Ye Feng's words were overly formal. In fact, not just this statement; every word from Zhu Ye Feng seemed calculated and precise, leaving no room for error, which made him even more uneasy. He spoke in a low voice: "Let's go now."
Zhu Ye Feng shrugged and stepped aside to let him pass.
"Let's go, Yiting."
"Mm?" Shangguan Yiting was still examining those medicine bottles, her dark pupils focused on the small text. Struggling to breathe, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, allowing her to lean slightly against him as he whispered, "These medicines can't all be for your sister-in-law, right? Medicine has its side effects; it's no wonder her health is in such a state if she takes them like this."
Shangguan Yiting snorted, "You’re talking nonsense before the investigation is even clear. Are you saying that the person lying in bed isn’t your family?"
"Yes, yes, yes, your family is my family." Zhu Yefeng's eyes darkened. "But to be honest, I think she won't wake up again. Why are you deceiving yourselves?"
Shangguan Yiting's expression changed, and she made a "shh" gesture with her hand. "If Xiao Lin hears you say this, he will kill you."
"Let him kill me then. I'm just speaking the truth; it's just that you all cling to a faint hope and don't want to listen." Zhu Yefeng lowered his voice and smiled lightly. "The current situation is extremely unfavorable for the Shangguan Family. The Jiang family has the upper hand. The military morale that was once bought by Shaoyi has now scattered after losing a few battles, while the Jiang family is thriving. The Northeast Shangguan Family has completely lost its power; I see their next target is the Northwest."
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Shangguan Yiting glared at him, her body trembling with anger at the insult to her family. "These are just temporary setbacks. We will reclaim Feng Province sooner or later, drive out those Japanese troops, and sweep Jiang Shaohao out as well!"
He laughed heartily, rubbed her nose playfully, and gently kissed her forehead. "My lady, how can you be so adorable? Don't you think your brother has no mood for a counterattack right now? His heart is entirely focused on the beauty in this hospital bed; how could he have the energy to compete with Jiang Shaohao?"
Shangguan Yiting bit her red lip, reluctant to think about it but unable to deny that Zhu Yefeng's words made sense. She covered her eyelashes and whispered, "So what do you think we should do?"
"Miss Jiang Yating has always been interested in Shaoyi, hasn't she? If he could marry her, wouldn't that mean he could do whatever he wants?"
Shangguan Yiting looked at Cheng Mo, who was still unconscious on the bed, feeling as if her heart was shattered. She closed her eyes and thought for a long while. "If Mo Su really doesn't wake up, marrying into the Jiang family might not be a bad choice."
Zhu Yefeng raised the corners of his mouth, revealing a meaningful smile.
