Shangguan Yiting wore a light red fitted high-neck Qipao, adorned with intricate Suzhou embroidery depicting a myriad of vibrant flowers, accentuating her graceful and curvaceous figure. The bold makeup on her face, however, did not appear vulgar; instead, it added a unique charm to her beauty.
"Sister, you are becoming more beautiful," Cheng Mo said, dressed in a plain long dress, lightly tying her dark hair up. Water-colored Eyes observed the similarities in the brows and eyes between Shangguan Yiting and Shangguan Shaoyi, with the corners of her lips curling into a faint smile.
"It's strange to say, but as one ages, they seem to become even more attractive," Shangguan Yiting remarked as she put away the round fan in her hand, graciously accepting Cheng Mo's compliment. Cheng Mo paused for a moment before smiling back; indeed, women often gain more allure with age rather than fading away.
Shangguan Yiting's gaze fell on Cheng Mo, admiring her picturesque features and pulling up the corners of her mouth. "Mo Su, I dare say that when you reach my age, your every gesture will surely captivate everyone."
Cheng Mo blushed and retorted, "Sister, what nonsense are you talking about?"
"How is that nonsense?" Shangguan Yiting playfully widened her almond-shaped eyes. The two burst into laughter, casting aside their worries. She took Cheng Mo's hand and said, "You must be curious why I'm throwing such a grand banquet to welcome them back?"
Cheng Mo pondered for a moment; logically speaking, after retreating without a fight, it should be quiet. Yet Shangguan Yiting insisted on making it a big deal, wanting everyone to know. Noticing her deep in thought, Shangguan Yiting smiled and explained, "It's quite simple. This time Jiang Shaohao withdrew his troops at the last minute, angering many generals. I want to take this opportunity to win them over at the banquet. Hmph! Jiang Shaohao thinks he can act arrogantly just because he has a few financial tycoons backing him. I want him to see the true strength of our Shangguan Family!"
Just as she thought. Cheng Mo sighed; although she didn't want to get involved in these matters, they inevitably concerned Shaoyi, making her think more seriously.
Still immersed in Shangguan Yiting's words, she was unaware that the smile in Shangguan Yiting's eyes gradually faded. When she looked up again, Shangguan Yiting had vanished from sight, replaced by the deep black eyes of Shangguan Shaoyi.
She was startled; Shangguan Shaoyi's smile was even more pronounced now, looking quite pleased.
"You seemed to be having such a good chat with sister; did I interrupt you?" he raised an eyebrow and asked.
"No..." Cheng Mo quickly shook her head, her Water-colored Eyes warming up. "Don't you need to socialize over there?"
"I've temporarily stepped away; Shen Deputy Officer is drinking on my behalf," he replied with a glint of light in his eyes. "I see that tonight Shen Deputy Officer is going to get scolded by Xiao Jing again."
Cheng Mo Su smiled lightly, her feather-like eyelashes trembling with joy. "You really are something; someone drinks for you, and you still make sarcastic remarks. However..." Her bright gaze extended outward. "The way Shen Deputy Officer interacts with Xiao Jing is just like this. I bet if Xiao Jing doesn't scold him for a day, he would feel a bit uncomfortable."
Shangguan Shaoyi chuckled, ruffling Cheng Mo Su's hair with a look of indulgence.
"Um..." The two were startled and turned to the source of the youthful voice—a little girl about five or six years old, holding a doll that was too big for her height. Her two sparkling eyes were fixed on Shangguan Shaoyi and Cheng Mo Su.
Cheng Mo Su smiled gently and bent down, softly asking, "What's wrong, little sister?"
"Well..." The little girl bit her lip as if making a decision. After a fierce internal struggle, she finally said, "I saw the painting on the wall on the second floor just now. My sister told me that it was made by the lady. I want to learn how to paint too. Could you teach me, lady?"
"Learn to paint?" Cheng Mo Su thought of her own childhood and nodded. "Sure! What's your name?"
Hearing her agreement, the little girl jumped up happily but suddenly realized something and covered her mouth in shock. She looked around and noticed no one had seen her actions before she relaxed and revealed her innocent smile again. "My name is Ye Yujin, and my sister is Yeh Zhenzhen."
So she is Yeh Zhenzhen's sister; no wonder they look so similar.
"Let's go; I'll take you upstairs to paint." Cheng Mo Su took her soft little hand, dragging the huge doll along the ground. Shangguan Shaoyi silently smiled and picked up the doll, speaking softly, "If you drag your doll on the ground like that, she will cry."
"Ah..." Ye Yujin looked at her doll with bright eyes full of concern and said to it, "Lucy, does it hurt? It was my fault; I didn't hold you properly."
"She won't blame you; look, she's smiling at you." Shangguan Shaoyi didn't return the doll but held it for her instead. He slightly nodded at Cheng Mo Su, who understood and led Ye Yujin up the stairs.
Shangguan Shaoyi pulled back the curtains for them and placed the doll in a corner of the table. Against the moonlight, there was a long-lost warmth in his eyes and brows that instantly drew people in. He undid the cuff button and loosened his wrist. Ye Yujin tilted her little face up and asked, "Are you going to mix colors and grind ink for us?"
Shangguan Shaoyi raised an eyebrow and did not respond. Cheng Mo Su nodded beside him, "Yes, don't be fooled by his cold face; he actually has a high level of skill in painting."
Shangguan Shaoyi's movements paused slightly, his pitch-black eyes falling on Cheng Mo Su. Cheng Mo Su playfully smiled at him, while Ye Yujin clapped her hands, "That's great! I want my brother to teach me because he's more handsome!"
Cheng Mo Su's eyebrows twitched slightly. Are all kids these days so superficial?
Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly and reached out to pull Cheng Mo Su closer, "I'll teach you together with Mo Su."
"Okay!" Ye Yujin clapped her hands happily. Shangguan Shaoyi dipped his brush in ink and casually sketched a landscape on the white rice paper.
Cheng Mo Su smiled, her gaze flowing between the two of them. She had dreamed countless times that one day they would have their own child. She would teach the child to paint while he ground the ink beside her. She would teach the child poetry while he wrote characters next to her. He would teach the child marksmanship while she smiled beside him. He would teach the child foreign languages while she sang.
She was momentarily stunned, a tear unconsciously sliding down her cheek as her gaze fixed on Shangguan Shaoyi's gentle expression as he looked down. She had always thought he didn't like children, but he was more attentive to them than anyone else. She had worried that he would be cold towards children, but instead, he was full of warmth.
He does like children.
Cheng Mo Su's fingers turned white from gripping tightly, her eyes misty with tears as she suddenly understood; he only said that children were troublesome because he cared about her more.
Her expression darkened as she repeatedly asked herself if she really had the right to deprive him of being a father...
