Shangguan Shaoyi furrowed his sword-like brows and held Cheng Mo Su's hand, signaling her not to worry. Cheng Mo Su felt a tightness in her chest, but her Water Eyes were exceptionally bright as she lightly bit her Rose-Colored Lips and said, “Dr. Hu, please just tell me directly what my situation is. I have the right to know.”
Dr. Hu glanced at her, then at Shangguan Shaoyi and Shangguan Yiting. Shangguan Shaoyi nodded at him, and he sighed, saying, “Looking at Consort Shangguan's pulse, it seems she has suffered from severe wind-cold multiple times in the past. Coupled with her poor sleep, her body is extremely weak. I'm afraid she may never conceive…”
She suddenly froze, her tightly bitten Rose-Colored lips turning pale, darkness clouding her vision as she felt herself about to fall backward. Shangguan Shaoyi quickly reached out to catch her in his arms, signaling Dr. Hu to leave with his eyes.
Cheng Mo Su lifted her gaze to meet his pitch-black eyes; his burning gaze was exceptionally deep, and she could not discern even a fraction of his emotions. She felt completely limp in his embrace, unable to move. Shangguan Shaoyi's expression darkened as he carried her horizontally back to the room. The voices downstairs were still lively, but the two of them had completely tuned it out.
She felt as if all the weight had left her body, like a feather drifting in the wind, light as a feather as she landed on the soft bed. Shangguan Shaoyi held her close and reached out to check her forehead, letting out a sigh of relief. She stared at him with her misty eyes, lost in thought.
“It’s okay, Mo Su,” Shangguan Shaoyi gently comforted her. “You can’t believe everything Dr. Hu says; I’ll invite another doctor to take a look another day.”
Cheng Mo Su shook her head; the translucent earrings on her earlobes jingled softly as the corners of her lips turned bitter. “Dr. Hu is one of the best traditional Chinese medicine doctors in the country. If what he says isn’t credible, then no one’s words can be trusted.”
“Mo Su.” His tone carried a hint of reproach as he adjusted her posture, forcing her Water Eyes to meet his gaze. “Even if what he said is true, so what?”
She glanced out at the twinkling stars that shone brilliantly like his gaze when he looked at her; however, she was uncertain how long he could feel this way… Even if he didn’t care, Shangguan Yiting would surely care. The Shangguan Family was a prestigious clan; she couldn’t let the line of the Shangguan Family end like this.
“Alright, stop thinking so much and get some sleep.” He pinched the corner of the silk quilt and gently kissed her forehead. “I’ll find a doctor for you tomorrow.”
“If tomorrow the doctor still says I can’t conceive, what then?” Her voice was barely audible in the cool air, faint as a whisper.
He paused for a moment, his gaze sharp and his tone firm. “If you can’t conceive, then we’ll just live together.”
She smiled lightly, looking at his exceptionally serious expression, and an inexplicable pang of bitterness swept through her heart. He rubbed her flowing hair gently, softening his tone, "Don't think too much. Get some rest. I still have to go out for some socializing, and I'll come back to keep you company later."
"Mm." She nodded lightly, but her heart was in turmoil, her mind filled with a buzzing sound that kept her tossing and turning in bed. That one sentence felt like a death sentence, making the happiness she had finally grasped vanish swiftly.
She didn't know how long it had been, lost in these annoying thoughts when she heard the soft sound of the door opening.
Startled, she sat up in bed and met Shangguan Shaoyi's dark, bright eyes. Seeing that she was still awake, Shangguan Shaoyi sighed softly, the coldness between his brows slightly easing as he came to sit beside her.
She silently looked at him; his chiseled features appeared even more stern under the moonlight streaming in. She reached out to trace his sword-like eyebrows, his nose bridge, and his lips, feeling her heart race with increasing anxiety. She believed in him and those fairy tales, but being born into a large family made her acutely aware that not having children would always be her eternal weakness.
He pulled her into his embrace, the faint scent of perfume mingling with a hint of smoke calming her slightly. She nestled closer into him, hearing his pleasant voice drifting by her ear, "Mo Su, good night."
"Mm." She responded softly. Behind her, his breathing grew steadier, as if he had already fallen asleep. She bit her Rose-Colored Lips, finding it somewhat unusual for Shaoyi to be so honest.
Turning to look at him, he suddenly opened his bright eyes, startling her. Unable to help herself, she pouted playfully, "You're so boring; playing this kind of game again."
"That's because my Mo Su always falls for it." His tone grew gentler, warm breath brushing against her delicate earlobe. She smiled shyly, and he leaned in fiercely to kiss her, claiming the sweetness between her lips.
"Shaoyi..." She reached out to push him away, but he subtly wrapped around her small hand and pressed it against his chest. Her face turned even redder. "Shaoyi, I really have something to tell you."
He paused for a moment before releasing her. The cool air rushed in instantly, and she unconsciously wrapped her arms around herself, not daring to look at him. After a while of silence, she seemed unsure of what to say; she just wanted to stay quietly with him and feel each other's presence.
He sighed as if realizing what she was thinking and wrapped his arms around her. She happened to lean against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. In that moment, she felt like a child who had found comfort and relaxed completely.
"Mosu, don't think too much. I told you, nothing will happen."
"Mm." She hummed softly, the smoky scent surrounding her making her feel warm and at ease. She soon felt drowsy and fell into a deep sleep.
When she woke up, it was already noon.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes and looked beside her; sure enough, Shangguan Shaoyi was missing again. She couldn't hide her slight disappointment. After getting up to freshen up, she prepared to go downstairs for a meal, only to find that Shangguan Shaoyi was already sitting at the dining table reading a newspaper. Upon seeing her come down, he raised an eyebrow.
She felt a surge of joy in her heart but turned pale under Shangguan Yiting's probing gaze. She walked over to sit beside Shangguan Shaoyi and smiled lightly, "Shaoyi, good morning. Sister, good morning."
Shangguan Yiting glanced at the dark circles hidden beneath her long eyelashes and took her hand with concern, "Why do you look so unwell? Did you not sleep well?" After a pause, she added, "Mosu, if you're feeling uneasy because of Dr. Hu's words, there's no need to worry. I've invited a Western doctor today; perhaps he can provide a different diagnosis."
She lifted her gaze to glance at Shangguan Yiting, who quickly brought the Western doctor in. Various cold instruments searched over her body as everyone held their breath, waiting for the results.
The Western doctor put down the instruments and shook his head under everyone's hopeful gazes, sighing, "I believe Dr. Hu's diagnosis yesterday was likely accurate."
