Just as she was thinking, Xiao Jing gently knocked on the door. She pulled her thoughts back and asked, "What is it?"
"The young master instructed that there will be a banquet at home tonight to welcome Commander Jiang. Did you forget, Young Mistress?" Cheng Mo thought for a moment. Although she didn't have many social engagements each day, there were still quite a few, and she didn't remember many things that were mentioned in passing. She simply acknowledged it, but then heard Xiao Jing say again, "I don't know which dress would suit me better. Could you help me choose, Young Mistress?"
"Of course." Cheng Mo stepped out of the room and went to her own room. Her delicate hand glided over the luxurious clothes in the wardrobe. Water Eyes slightly assessed Xiao Jing. Although Xiao Jing couldn't be considered an outstanding beauty, her bright eyes carried an elegant charm that made her unforgettable.
She reached out and took out a pure white dress. Water Eyes remained calm, and her Rose-Colored Lips slightly curved upward. "I think this one suits you very well, Xiao Jing."
"Really?" Xiao Jing's eyes lit up, breaking into a smile. "I think we have the same idea, Young Mistress."
As dusk fell, the moon peeked out, and the stars began to twinkle. In the Shangguan Residence, voices were lively and guests filled the rooms. On one side was Shangguan Shaoyi setting up the banquet, while on the other side were the ladies gathered around a mahjong table. Laughter and cheerful voices intertwined, breaking the usual silence.
Cheng Mo was absentmindedly playing her cards but occasionally glanced over at the table where Shangguan Shaoyi was sitting, hoping for an accidental eye contact. However, Shaoyi seemed as if he had a heart of stone, not looking this way no matter what. She felt a wave of frustration in her heart and casually played a card.
"Oh dear, you're letting me win here; thank you, Mo Su," Shangguan Yiting pressed down on her cards with a grin. "I won."
Cheng Mo finally came back to her senses, looked at the pile of cards, and sighed.
Shangguan Yiting teased again, "Ah, our Shangguan family members really know how to play." As soon as she finished speaking, she shot a sideways glance at Jiang Yating beside her. She thought that with Jiang Yating's personality, she would surely retort back, but unexpectedly Jiang Yating merely raised the corners of her mouth and quietly played cards without saying a word.
After several more rounds, Cheng Mo continued to lose badly. Shangguan Yiting said her luck was bad and insisted on switching seats. So Cheng Mo ended up sitting next to Jiang Yating.
Jiang Yating skillfully played a card and glanced at Cheng Mo. She raised her eyes with a smile and whispered in a voice only they could hear, "Consort Shangguan, I apologize for what happened a few days ago. I shouldn't have said those things to you; you must have taken it to heart to be so distracted."
Cheng Mo Su Mianrong was taken aback, not expecting Jiang Yating to say such a thing. She smiled gently, her demeanor calm and graceful, "Not really."
"Is that so? That's even better." Jiang Yating was playing cards, but her gaze drifted towards Cheng Mo Su. "Dad has handed over the command of the northern army to Shaoyi. What do you think of Shaoyi toasting with my dad?"
Cheng Mo Su instinctively glanced over and was momentarily stunned. Although Shaoyi had a cold expression, his lips maintained a polite smile, attending to everyone at the table amidst the clinking of glasses, which was a stark contrast to his usual taciturn demeanor. Jiang Yating smiled, "How about that? You haven't seen this side of him, have you? But I often see him like this."
Cheng Mo Su withdrew her bright gaze, her cheeks pale, feeling quite bored and not wanting to engage with Jiang Yating any further.
Across from them, Mrs. Wang was still playing cards. She furrowed her brows slightly, feeling somewhat frustrated, unsure if it was bad luck or just her own clumsiness today. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, wearing a faint smile. As she prepared to draw another card, the people around her suddenly stopped their movements and looked at her with ambiguous smiles.
Confused, she turned around to find Shangguan Shaoyi standing behind her with a bright smile, his eyes fixed intently on her. Her face flushed crimson, and her heart raced. With a playful pout and soft eyes, she asked, "Why did you suddenly come up behind me? Aren't you drinking?"
"I am," he replied softly with a laugh, leaning close to her delicate ear, causing her to shiver slightly. "I wanted to see you first before going over; otherwise, wouldn't you lose even more?" Cheng Mo Su's face turned even redder as she playfully tapped him; however, his large hand enveloped hers completely. He smiled handsomely while she laughed gracefully, resembling a painting of celestial lovers.
Jiang Yating turned her head away as if ignoring them. Mrs. Wang was sharp-eyed and immediately remarked, "General Shangguan is truly considerate towards Consort Shangguan, coming over to check on us while eating. General Shangguan must be worried we’ll eat all of Madam's food; anyway, no matter what happens, you'll be here. If Consort Shangguan loses too much later on, we'll just ask you for it."
"Mrs. Wang is quite accurate; no matter how much Mo Su loses, I will cover it," he said while ruffling Cheng Mo Su's hair. She lowered her head with a faint smile on her lips, basking in the warm light that highlighted the tranquility and beauty unique to just the two of them.
Shangguan Yiting scoffed lightly and exclaimed with enthusiasm, "When did my brother become so eloquent? I never noticed before; come here and let your sister take a look." Shangguan Shaoyi chuckled as he patted Cheng Mo Su's soft hand and walked over to Shangguan Yiting. Unexpectedly, Shangguan Yiting immediately pinched his cheek and joked, "Let me see if someone is wearing a mask pretending to be you."
Laughter erupted at the card table as Jiang Yating glanced at Cheng Mo Su. Cheng Mo Su smiled without showing her teeth; only the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, making it hard for others to read her emotions. Yet this seemingly bland and somewhat dull woman was regarded as a treasure by Shangguan Shaoyi.
Shangguan Yiting rubbed her forehead and spread out her cards in resignation. "Forget it; I'm feeling a bit tired. You all continue; I'm going upstairs to rest for a while." Seeing her complexion wasn't good, Cheng Mo Su quickly stood up to help her back to her room. She smiled and declined the offer; however, Cheng Mo Su's gaze lingered subtly on Jiang Yating. With a slight smile, she allowed Cheng Mo Su to accompany her back to the room while Shangguan Shaoyi gave some instructions to Shen Mingliang before following them both.
"The doctor will be here soon." She hung up the phone and poured a cup of hot water for Shangguan Yiting. Shangguan Yiting shot her a glance and said, "You're making a big deal out of nothing. Just a little dizziness and you called the doctor over. I told you I'm fine."
"Alright, sister, just listen to Mo Su," Shangguan Shaoyi leaned against the window, her bright gaze falling on the thick darkness outside, momentarily blending into the pitch-black night.
"Okay, okay, I'll listen to your wife," Shangguan Yiting joked with a smile. Just then, the doctor pushed open the door. Since childhood, Shangguan Yiting had loved traditional Chinese medicine, so the doctor treating her was Dr. Hu, the most renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in New Beicheng.
Dr. Hu gently pressed her pulse and examined her tongue, smiling as he said, "It's nothing serious; you've just been under too much stress and overworked these past few days. Rest well for a few days and watch your diet."
"See? I told you both I'm fine, yet you still insisted on bothering Dr. Hu," Shangguan Yiting rolled her eyes and suddenly remembered something. "Since Dr. Hu is here, why not have him check on Mo Su as well? She's been married for a while now; she might be pregnant."
Cheng Mo Su's face turned red as she intertwined her fingers. "Sister, what are you talking about..."
"Oh come on, there's nothing to be shy about. Come over and let Dr. Hu take a look; even if you're not pregnant, he can check your health," Shangguan Yiting urged.
Cheng Mo Su glanced at Shangguan Shaoyi, who nodded at her with a slight smile. With a sigh, she extended her delicate wrist for Dr. Hu to examine. However, his previously smiling face turned serious.
"This... Young Master, may we speak privately for a moment?"
