At two o'clock in the morning, the event finally came to a close. Shangguan Shaoyi and Cheng Mosu naturally needed to bid farewell to the guests one by one.
Only then did the two of them let out a sigh of relief. He glanced at Light's slightly flickering eyes and reached out to pull her. Before she could react, he picked her up in his arms and got into the car. Shen Mingliang, seeing this situation, dared not breathe and stepped on the gas, speeding away.
She leaned against him, feeling the faint scent of smoke surrounding her. She quietly stole a glance at him; he was staring straight ahead. Her heart trembled as the hem of her dress swayed on the ground. Her countenance was clear and graceful, yet shy in the reflection on the car window.
He carried her out of the car, and Shen Mingliang hurriedly opened the door of the villa for them. He said nothing but carried her toward the master bedroom. Cheng Mosu felt the ambiguous gaze from Shangguan Yiting behind her and instinctively shrank closer into his embrace. His mind was in turmoil as he kicked open the master bedroom door and carefully placed her on the soft bed.
"Cheng Mosu." He looked at her curled up in his arms and couldn't help but chuckle. Her face was flushed, refusing to meet his gaze. He gently grasped her chin with his fingertips and leaned down to kiss her rose-colored lips. She shivered as his kisses fell delicately all over her body. His black eyes sparkled as a pleasant voice whispered in her ear, "Cheng Mosu, I miss you."
She was taken aback for a moment, raising her fingertips to touch his chiseled features, her fingers trembling slightly with a hint of a smile. "I miss you too."
His smile deepened as he reached up to turn off the lights, leaving only a room filled with affection and love.
She slept particularly soundly and sweetly that night, lost in dreams filled with their figures.
When she awoke again, it was already noon. She lifted her delicate wrist from the golden silk quilt but felt only a cool breeze in the air, realizing he had left again.
She sighed softly, dressed neatly, lightly gathered her dark hair, and then went downstairs.
"Wow, you're up so late! You must have been exhausted yesterday," Shangguan Yiting said while holding a cup of coffee in her delicate hands. The restaurant was filled with a rich aroma; upon smelling it, she felt hungry and ignored Shangguan Yiting's teasing. Instead, she turned to Xiao Jing and said, "Please make me a cup of coffee too."
"Sure." Xiao Jing smiled lightly, causing her cheeks to flush as she lowered her head and traced circles on the linen tablecloth.
Shangguan Yiting raised her beautiful eyebrows and stopped teasing. She pulled out a newspaper from beside her and handed it to Cheng Mosu with a slight smile. "Take a look at what this newspaper says."
With a puzzled expression, she took the newspaper. Her watery eyes rippled as she saw that Mr. Chen Mu Yin had indeed written an article introducing Cheng Mosu to the world. The words were sincere and beautifully phrased. Remembering Mr. Chen's earlier words, she hadn't taken them seriously at the time; yet it was touching that Mr. Chen would do such things for someone he barely knew.
"Mr. Chen Mu Yin speaking up for you has indeed helped us greatly," Shangguan Yiting said as she set down her coffee cup, her beautiful eyes shining brightly. "He is a respected teacher among all students in the North; his words carry weight. Moreover, he praised Xiao Lin's resistance against Japan highly in his article while expressing dissatisfaction with Jiang Shanghao's indifferent attitude. I think this article will stir up quite a commotion."
She trembled slightly, the criticism from Limerick still echoing in her memory. Now...
Shangguan Yiting pierced through her thoughts and held her hand, saying, “Cheng Mosu, don’t worry, this time public opinion is definitely on our side.”
She nodded, but a trace of unease still slipped through her heart.
After lunch, without a short rest, she planned to accompany Xiao Jing to try on some dresses, so she invited Xiao Jing to go out together. Shangguan Yiting felt uneasy; after all, she still vividly remembered the incident when Cheng Mosu was kidnapped last time. Thus, it turned into three women going together.
Shangguan Yiting would certainly find the best tailor shop, and the prices there were indeed quite high. Xiao Jing looked around and insisted that she hadn’t seen any nice styles, pulling the two away. Shangguan Yiting’s expression was serious as she said, “Even if the Shangguan Family is not doing well, how could we not afford to make clothes?” This kept her there.
While Xiao Jing was being fitted, Shangguan Yiting and Cheng Mosu ordered a pot of tea and savored it slowly. Noticing Cheng Mosu’s anxious expression, Shangguan Yiting knew she was thinking about Shangguan Shaoyi. She couldn’t help but sigh when the conversation of two female students behind them caught their attention.
“Did you read Mr. Chen’s article today?”
“Of course. I must say it was very moving. If it were me, I probably wouldn’t have the courage of Miss Cheng.”
The student who asked laughed, “Still calling her Miss Cheng, she’s now Consort Shangguan. Oh right, everyone at our school admires Shangguan Shaoying. Now that whatever Manchuria has been established, it’s completely a puppet of the Japanese, doing their bidding. Meanwhile, the south is still doing nothing, just watching from afar while letting Young Commander fight against foreign invasion alone. It’s really disheartening.”
“Isn’t it? The students at our school say the same thing. I really don’t know what Jiang Shanghao is thinking…” The two were just casually wandering around and didn’t stay long before leaving, their voices fading until they became indistinct.
Shangguan Yiting raised her eyebrows and smiled brightly, “It seems this time public opinion is entirely on our side.”
“Yeah.” Cheng Mosu felt a bit better, “If that’s really the case, maybe Jiang Shanghao will allocate troops to support Shaoyi.”
Shangguan Yiting nodded just as Xiao Jing stepped out of the fitting room. The tailor smiled and said, “Madam Shen, your figure is great; everything looks good on you. I think these few sets are nice…”
“No need; I’ll just choose one set since it’s formal wear and I won’t wear it often.” Xiao Jing hurriedly refused. However, Shangguan Yiting firmly pressed down her hand with a smile full of joy, “We’ll buy them all.”
“Miss Shangguan, I don’t…”
"Alright, I have the final say." Shangguan Yiting said cheerfully, linking arms with the two of them. "In a few days, we'll come to pick up the clothes. Let's go home; I'll cook tonight and show you my skills."
Cheng Mosu's eyes brightened. After all, she had only tasted Shangguan Yiting's cooking once and was filled with anticipation. However, Xiao Jing shot her a look and shook her head vigorously. Cheng Mosu immediately understood; it seemed that Shangguan Yiting's culinary skills... might not be very good.
Under Xiao Jing's urging, Shangguan Yiting didn't showcase her cooking skills. She sat alone on the sofa, feeling somewhat dissatisfied. "Xiao Jing is being too polite, saying that I ordered a custom dress for her and that she must thank me. She even took over my cooking duties; it's really too much."
Cheng Mosu couldn't help but cover her mouth and chuckle. Shangguan Yiting's face turned red as she raised her voice, "What? Do you think my cooking could poison you?"
"No, no," Cheng Mosu quickly waved her hand, but the smile on her face was hard to hide. Just then, the phone rang, and she hurried to answer it, escaping from Shangguan Yiting's side.
"Hello, Shangguan Residence." She said with a light smile.
"Cheng Mosu, it's me." On the other end of the line was Shangguan Shaoyi's warm yet cool tone. She lowered her gaze slightly and responded gently.
"I'm not coming back tonight; there's an important meeting to attend."
"Oh." Cheng Mosu couldn't hide her disappointment.
There was a soft chuckle on the other end of the line. "Alright, Cheng Mosu, once this busy period is over, I'll be able to spend time with you properly. Today is crucial; Jiang Shanghao is coming. If the negotiations go well, my Shangguan Family's Army should be able to regain its former glory."
