The pungent smell dissipated, and his body gradually regained sensation. His long, strong fingers trembled slightly as he slowly opened his eyes.
The cramped room was filled with a musty odor, and the light filtering through the newspaper-covered window diminished what little brightness remained. He felt anxious and looked around, finally spotting the person he had been longing for.
Cheng Mo lay unharmed on the bed, her eyes tightly closed, still unconscious.
The door was gently opened, and he instinctively reached for the gun at his waist, only to remember that it had been taken from him by those lackeys when he went to find Inoue. Realizing this, he positioned himself in front of Cheng Mo, his dark eyes radiating a cold light.
Two people entered the room; he did not recognize the first one, but the second was...
He sighed in relief and said, "Mr. Cheng, it's been a long time."
Cheng Yi nodded. Compared to before, Shangguan Shaoyi now appeared even more resolute and composed, his gaze deeper and steadier. He glanced at his daughter lying on the bed and asked, "Yes, it has been a long time. Is Su'er still not awake?"
With a clear gaze sweeping over the beautiful woman on the bed, he nodded and replied, "Yes, I just woke up myself."
"Oh," Cheng Yi responded and introduced him, "Come, Shaoyi, this gentleman is Mr. Nan from the Southern Gang in Shanghai, and this is Shangguan Shaoyi."
Nan Wan smiled broadly. Shangguan Shaoyi instantly understood that it was Nan Wan who had saved him. He took Nan Wan's outstretched hand and said, "I've heard much about you, Mr. Nan. It's a pleasure to meet you." He paused for a moment, an air of heroism in his brow. "Thank you for saving my life."
Nan Wan waved his hand dismissively and focused intently on the unconscious Cheng Mo. "I have a connection with Miss Cheng and we hit it off quite well. This Qingfeng Inn is owned by me; it specializes in gathering intelligence from all corners of the South and North. You are very safe here; rest assured." It turned out that Nan Wan was indeed the owner of the inn—truly a person of hidden depth.
"Thank you for saving my daughter," Cheng Yi said as he moved a stool to sit beside Cheng Mo. The stool was unstable and creaked under him.
“Mr. Cheng, you are too polite. I saved Miss Cheng because I truly admire her character and personality.” Nan Wan smiled quietly, then turned to Shangguan Shaoyi and said, “That day, Master Chen brought her to see you despite the danger. I had no choice but to ask Liniang from the theater troupe for help to sneak her into the group. Later, Liniang visited and said you two must have met by now. I am genuinely happy for both of you.”
“This New Beicheng is filled with my informants. Upon hearing that Miss Cheng was captured by the Japanese, I rushed to rescue her.” Nan Wan reached out to touch Cheng Mo Su's forehead, feeling it was burning hot, and couldn't help but sigh, “Miss Cheng must have endured a lot of torment; she still hasn't regained consciousness.”
Shangguan Shaoyi's gaze turned cold as he looked at Cheng Mo Su's peach blossom-like sleeping face, feeling his heart being squeezed repeatedly. He held Cheng Mo Su's delicate little hand, his expression steady. “Inoue said he injected a drug into Mo Su; I need to take her to the hospital immediately.”
“Rest assured, that drug is something even gang assassins like us can concoct. I have already administered an antidote to Miss Cheng; she will be fine.” Nan Wan observed his distinct features and fell silent for a moment, seemingly recalling something. He raised his eyes to look at Nan Wan and said, “Before I fainted, I smelled a pungent odor; I wonder if it was from you, Mr. Nan…”
“Yes, that was my own concoction; it can cause someone to lose consciousness instantly.” Nan Wan turned to pull the door open. “You all should rest well; I will step out for a bit.” He cast a meaningful glance at Cheng Yi. “Mr. Cheng, regarding that past incident, I acted on behalf of a friend. Now that I have saved your daughter, it can be considered settling the debt from back then.”
Shangguan Shaoyi did not understand what they were discussing and did not think much about it; he merely studied Cheng Mo Su's picturesque sleeping face, eagerly awaiting her awakening. Beside him, Cheng Yi’s voice sounded slightly weary. “Yes, Nan Wan, don’t worry about it; after all, that matter didn’t succeed. I won’t hold it against you.”
“That’s good.”
Nan Wan closed the door behind him, and the air returned to its usual stuffiness. Cheng Yi turned to open the window, allowing a refreshing breeze to flow in and brighten the dim room slightly. He glanced at Shangguan Shaoyi, who was deeply focused on Cheng Mo Su and didn’t notice the other sounds around him. He pondered deeply; if he had agreed to their union back then, what would their situation be like now?
In the end, humans cannot outsmart fate; destiny ultimately prevails over luck.
He cleared his throat and coughed twice. “Shaoyi, Su’er’s health is poor but she will wake up eventually. You don’t need to stay by her side all the time; there are some things I would like to hear your thoughts on.”
“Understood.” Reluctantly pulling his gaze away, he looked at Cheng Yi and regained his usual rationality. “What advice do you have for me, Mr. Cheng?”
“Don’t call me Mr. Cheng anymore; your engagement with Su’er has been public for years now. That means Su’er has been part of your Shangguan family for quite some time.” He stared intently at Shangguan Shaoyi, whose pitch-black eyes trembled slightly in disbelief.
After a moment of silence, he raised his profile from the hidden light, his handsome face radiating a barely perceptible joy. "Yes, Father Yue, what guidance do you have? Please speak."
Cheng Yi nodded in satisfaction and said, "I can see your feelings for Su'er clearly. In the past, I was too entangled, always wanting to grasp the future, but circumstances change constantly; how can everything go as one wishes? This time, Su'er risked danger and came alone to the north to find you, which shows that her feelings for you have not changed at all. I also know that you would be willing to give up your life for her. Since that is the case, why not walk hand in hand together until old age?"
He lowered his gaze, lost in deep thought. "Father Yue means for me to set aside the war and return to seclusion with Mo Su?"
"Exactly." There was a look of understanding in his eyes. "Su'er has done so much for you; she only desires a stable and peaceful life. Can you provide that for her?"
The room fell silent. If one listened closely, only Cheng Mo's faint breathing could be heard. He quietly cast his gaze upon her cheek, feeling an indescribable bitterness in his chest. His pitch-black eyes quietly fixed on her sleeping face as he grasped her slightly warm hand.
In this bright gaze, she slowly opened her eyes.
"This is..." Her voice was barely audible as her misty eyes stared directly at Shangguan Shaoyi. Suddenly, something struck her heart; a wave of sourness surged within her, and tears moistened her long Eyelashes. She had not died; he was still by her side.
She reached out to hold him back in disbelief. "Shaoyi..."
"I'm here." He leaned down and gently kissed her Eyelashes. Though she felt weak and fragile, she still managed to support the weight of her arm and clung to his neck. He smiled slightly, and the tension vanished in the moment she awakened, leaving only gratitude for the world and respect for life.
Cheng Yi sighed and turned to leave, leaving this already small space for the two who had just experienced Life and Death.
