The guests took their seats, and various fruits and snacks were laid out on the table. Waiters moved among them, pouring fine wine for the attendees. Everyone raised their glasses and chatted with expressions that were all too similar, their conversations lacking novelty, yet each person appeared to be enjoying themselves, which was quite perplexing.
However, Shangguan Shaoyi was not one of them. With his rough hands gripping a clear goblet, he stood by the window, gazing at the spring scenery, his mind drifting elsewhere.
Yun Yun unknowingly approached him from behind, raising her wine glass high towards him, a subtle fragrance wafting through the air. "Mr. Shangguan, after parting yesterday, we meet again this morning. Is this what they call fate?" Shangguan Shaoyi turned around to look at her beautiful eyes, her lips curving into an enchanting smile.
Shangguan Shaoyi raised an eyebrow, noncommittal in his response.
Yun Yun's smile grew wider, her long eyelashes fluttering slowly and rhythmically. A few strands of curled hair hung down her snow-white neck, swaying gently. "Mr. Shangguan seems to be quite poor with words, but in the stories circulating about your romance with Miss Cheng, you appear as a lovesick figure. It seems that rumors do have their way of spreading."
A glint of coldness flashed in Shangguan Shaoyi's eyes as he finished his drink in one gulp. His expression remained calm and unhurried. "For some people, speaking is a pleasure; for others, it's a waste. To you, my silence simply means I don't wish to waste my energy."
"Oh?" Yun Yun's smile was both cruel and beautiful as she finished her red wine as well. The allure in her eyes was almost ghostly. "It seems Mr. Shangguan doesn't like me very much. But that's alright..." She slowly stepped closer until her body was just a millimeter away from Shangguan Shaoyi's. The strong scent of her perfume invaded his senses, and her seductive smile began to sting his eyes. Her delicate hand slowly rose but paused mid-air, her gaze dreamy and enchanting. "One day you will come looking for me, and then you will have much to say."
Shangguan Shaoyi smiled faintly but did not retreat; instead, his eyes grew colder as he stared at Yun Yun, seemingly wanting to see what trick she would pull next. Yun Yun was taken aback; indeed, Shangguan Shaoyi's heart was untroubled—he felt nothing for her; otherwise, he wouldn't stand so tall and steady like a pine tree.
She took a step back and devised another plan in her mind, her red lips curling up with emotion. "Mr. Shangguan, see you later."
Shangguan Shaoyi nodded, his doubts gradually expanding. These encounters were far from coincidental; what was this woman's true purpose? His thoughts suddenly returned to Lin Hongyao's last moments; his pupils constricted sharply—could this woman be the intermediary between Lin Hongyao and the Japanese?
The gloom in Shangguan Shaoyi's heart deepened as he reflexively reached for the gun at his waist only to find empty air—he had removed it upon entering earlier. In truth, he didn't need to remove it; however, it was a courtesy to Uncle Rong Hai who had watched him grow up while also showing that he did not grant himself special treatment. The coldness in his gaze expanded like an endless abyss or a thousand-foot ice pond.
If she truly is Yun Yun, he would personally take revenge for his father, brother-in-law, and nephew.
He put down his wine glass and searched around for the purplish-red figure, but she seemed to have suddenly vanished without a trace. The entire mansion was resplendent, bustling with people, each dressed in deep red and light purple, making it hard to distinguish anyone. He focused his gaze and suddenly spotted a patch of pure white hidden among the crowd; if he wasn't mistaken, that patch of white was Yun Yun's cat.
He stepped forward, but the cat was adept at hiding. Its left eye was a deep blue and its right eye a bright green, eerily reminiscent of its owner.
Shangguan Shaoyi followed the cat into a room. He slowly raised his head and saw the cat leap onto the bed, letting out an extremely lazy meow. The thick curtains hung heavily, blocking out the sunlight, and on the bed lay a delicate figure who slightly straightened up, twisting like a snake as she shed the golden velvet blanket draped over her. A fair and beautiful body lay bare before him. The cat nestled in her arms, enjoying the softness of her skin. She slowly lifted her head, appearing as if she had been waiting for a long time, her enchanting eyes shimmering with endless ripples, ready to dissolve his defenses.
"Young Master Shangguan, I initially thought you were different from other foul men. I didn't expect you to be so impatient. Just outside, you were acting like a gentleman; how is it that you've barged into my room now?" Yun Yun said as she ran her fingers through the cat's long fur, her snow-white thigh gradually lowering to the floor, a subtle fragrance lingering in the air as she smiled seductively. Seeing Shangguan Shaoyi merely staring at her with unwavering eyes, it seemed that her body appeared to him as nothing more than ordinary flesh, failing to stir even the slightest ripple in his heart.
She felt a pang of panic inside but maintained her composure on the surface. She slowly walked up to him and reached out to hook her arm around his neck. Lip Corners turned upward; she intended to say something more when he suddenly grasped her delicate wrist tightly, his eyes filled with boundless anger. "You are Yun Yun, aren't you?"
Yun Yun's pupils constricted sharply as she felt cold dread; it turned out that Lin Hongyao had betrayed her before dying!
She bit down hard on Shangguan Shaoyi's arm, but he seemed impervious to pain and did not let go. She smiled alluringly and said, "What does Mr. Shangguan mean by Yun Yun? I can't understand you. Also, if you don't let go of me, I'm going to scream 'assault.' A dignified young master bullying a weak woman would surely become a joke if it got out."
"Hmph, what others think has nothing to do with me." His grip tightened further while he casually tore off a sheet from the bed and wrapped it around Yun Yun before dragging her out. Even now, Yun Yun was quite frightened. "Hey, what exactly are you doing? Where are you dragging me off to?"
"I'm taking you back for questioning—to see if you are indeed Yun Yun and whether you can understand what I'm saying; that will be clear after one interrogation," he said coldly.
"Are you not afraid that dragging me out like this will lead everyone to misunderstand and tarnish your reputation?" She suddenly thought of something; Shangguan Shaoyi had just mentioned not caring about others' opinions. Seizing the moment, she blurted out, "Well then, if you don't care about those unrelated people, what about Miss Cheng? Just think about how Miss Cheng would feel if she heard rumors about you and me."
Mo Su... His grip loosened immediately as images of her gentle and graceful profile filled his mind; her laughter and expressions danced in his heart. He might not care about others, but he could never disregard her.
Yun Yun was taken aback; this tactic had indeed worked. Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, she forcefully pulled her arm free and escaped from beside him.
"Lin, I've been looking for you for a long time, and it turns out you're here!"
Shangguan Shaoyi was slightly taken aback. Turning around, she saw it was Rong Hai and hurriedly said, "Uncle Rong, I have some urgent matters to attend to."
"What matters?" Uncle Lin turned and caught sight of the woman wrapped in a bedsheet, startled. His gaze kept shifting between the two. Shangguan Shaoyi coldly explained, "Uncle Rong, this woman is probably the one who conspired with Lin Hongyao to harm my father!"
"What are you talking about?" Uncle Lin quickly clarified, "This young lady is a noble from Manchuria, just returned from abroad. She is the youngest daughter of the former Prince Duan, Aisin Gioro Yunqi..."
Aisin Gioro Yunqi?
