What is this idiot doing?! Doesn't she know that this is life-threatening?! Shaoyi's expression tightened as he mounted another horse and immediately chased after her.
Cheng Mo Su on the horse was also quite frightened. She had only acted out of anger earlier, not expecting this horse to be so wild. With just a little whip, it started running wildly at an incredible speed. She glanced back and, in a daze, saw Shaoyi rushing towards her, calling her name, calling out "Cheng Mo Su."
Cheng Mo Su forced a smile, covering the fear in her eyes with a warm expression. Shaoyi was momentarily taken aback; was she smiling? What time was it for her to be smiling?! His face darkened severely, and he blamed himself even more. If he hadn't been distracted earlier, how could he have missed seeing Cheng Mo Su galloping away?
He raised his whip, and the hooves kicked up a cloud of dust.
He reached her side at the fastest speed possible, suddenly realizing that even when he was fleeing for his life, he had never moved this quickly. He extended a hand and shouted, "Give me your hand!" Cheng Mo Su gritted her teeth; her horse had completely lost control. At that moment, she could only hold onto the horse's neck to prevent herself from falling off. In such a bumpy situation, reaching out a hand was too difficult for her.
But his voice rang in her ears, somehow calming her down amidst the chaos. Her mood surprisingly became calm and serene. She continued to hold tightly onto the horse's neck with her right hand while reaching out with her left towards his large hand. The warm winter sunlight shone on their hands about to clasp together. The tips of their fingers brushed lightly before being quickly pulled apart by the frenzied horse, making it hard for her to focus on his figure in the shaking view.
Shaoyi's sword-like brows furrowed tightly. Cheng Mo Su suddenly found it amusing; this was probably the first time she saw him so anxious.
This girl is still smiling?! Shaoyi's anger intensified. Did she not understand her current situation? This horse could throw her off at any moment; did she think it was fun?!
Shaoyi glared at her, realizing that in his panic he couldn't grab her hand. Even if he did manage to catch it, pulling her over would likely injure her. After thinking it through, there was only one solution left. He said in a deep voice, "Hold on tight to the horse's neck."
Without time to think further, she did as he instructed. Cheng Mo Su instinctively tightened her grip around the horse's neck. Shaoyi leaped onto the wild horse and pulled on the reins firmly. The horse let out a long and sharp neigh before coming to an abrupt stop. Cheng Mo Su was now drenched in sweat from the ordeal; seeing the horse finally stop, she let out a sigh of relief and revealed her usual graceful smile. "Fortunately, nothing happened." She turned to thank him but saw Shaoyi's serious expression.
"What were you doing?" Cheng Mo Su was slightly taken aback; this was the first time she had seen Shaoyi angry. Usually so cold and aloof, he seemed genuinely… very angry now…
Cheng Mo Su tugged at his sleeve. The space on the horse was small; they were almost pressed against each other. She could smell a faint scent of gunpowder on him that made her feel particularly safe, and without realizing it, she leaned against his shoulder. He was momentarily startled as he felt her delicate fragrance wafting towards him without reserve, penetrating deep into his lungs. His tense face slowly relaxed.
"From now on, you are not allowed to ride like that again. Don't joke with your life. A horse is a gentleman among beasts, and a gentleman needs someone who understands him, not someone who strikes him." I originally wanted to scold her sternly, but looking at her gentle demeanor, I couldn't bring myself to be harsh. In the end, I said something that was so absurd it made me laugh at myself.
Cheng Mosu was taken aback for a moment, then burst into a melodious laugh that rang like a bell. Seeing Shaoyi biting her lip uncomfortably, she said, "Alright, I won't do it again next time." She looked at Shaoyi softly, and the gloomy mood from earlier vanished. Shaoyi seemed to feel better as well, slowly pulling the reins and walking back. Cheng Mosu was curious, "How should I pull the reins?" Shaoyi glanced at her and took her hand, placing it on the reins. She felt a tightness in her heart; her fair and smooth hand was so cold, probably because she had been frightened earlier. Thinking of this, his grip tightened slightly, as if he wanted to warm her with the heat of his palm.
Cheng Mosu's heart raced irregularly; all the surrounding sounds became blurred. It seemed that her world only contained this person riding with her. Above them was the gradually warming sunlight, and she leaned against him lightly, secretly gazing at his eyes that fluctuated between warmth and coldness.
In the distance, Huang Wei silently watched them. She had also been startled by the earlier dangerous scene and thought it might be because Cheng Mosu misunderstood something that led to such behavior that was unlike her character. Fortunately, she was fine; otherwise, Huang Wei would have become a villain throughout history. Feeling embarrassed, she fiddled with her hair.
"Hey, you two are back? Watching your sweet moments just now made me really envious," Huang Wei teased as usual but still looked somewhat apprehensive at Cheng Mosu.
Cheng Mosu smiled gently and didn't mention what had just happened; she only felt the warmth behind her suddenly dissipate. Shaoyi had already dismounted but did not walk away or revert to his usual cold demeanor. Instead, he extended a hand toward her on horseback, saying, "Come on, be careful."
Their hands clasped together; Cheng Mosu gently exerted herself and jumped down from the horse. He leaned close to her ear and whispered, "You were quite scared today; let's not ride anymore. Let's head back."
"No!" Cheng Mosu suddenly called out without knowing why. Looking at the stunned expressions of Shaoyi and Huang Wei, her face turned red instantly. "What I mean is... I..." Her gaze shifted between the two of them, unsure of how to continue.
Shaoyi sighed. Cheng Mosu was usually calm and gentle, but this flustered version of her seemed particularly endearing. He still held onto her hand; her originally cold hand gradually became warm and matched the color of her skin and ears. A bright smile appeared between his brows as he said, "Let's go; I'll take you back."
She looked up at him; his hand slowly loosened its grip, yet she felt no distance growing between them. She quickly glanced at Huang Wei, who smiled and nodded at her. Shaoyi had already started walking, and Cheng Mosu hurriedly followed suit. They walked one after another as they did on that snowy night, but their feelings and state of mind were entirely different now.
In the Cheng Residence, Butler Liu had just finished his tasks and felt quite uneasy in his heart. His relatives were truly bothersome; they had scolded him again today without considering how well he treated them in the past. Now that he had fallen out of favor for a moment, they insulted and troubled him like this.
"Dad!"
"Wen Tang, why are you in the Cheng Residence? It's better to go back home if you have nothing to do, so the young lady won't get any ideas."
"She's just a fifteen-year-old girl. Why are you afraid of her? She's causing chaos in our house." Liu Wen Tang's dissatisfaction was evident on his face. "Father, you haven't been spared from those relatives mocking you these days. How about this: let's pull off a big score at the Cheng Residence and then take the money and leave, never to look at anyone's face again!"
"What nonsense are you talking about!" The butler hurriedly covered his mouth, glancing around nervously.
"Father, this is your room. What are you afraid of? Do you think there are ears on the other side of the wall?!" Liu Wen Tang pushed the butler's hand away. "Father, I know you're afraid to do these things, but don't worry, I've got it all planned out! We'll make our move on New Year's Eve!"
"You've got it all planned out?! What have you planned?!" The butler's eyes widened in shock. "You ungrateful child!"
