"She's quite an interesting woman," I said with a smile.
"Indeed, Mrs. Chen is a legendary figure. If Master Ye could befriend her, it would be beneficial for your future career," Gao Fen remarked.
"Mr. Gao is right; I should make an effort to get to know Mrs. Chen," I agreed.
As they spoke, we had already reached the top floor.
I was stunned by the sight before me.
The hall was brilliantly lit, filled with the fragrance of fine clothing and the rustle of silk. The gentlemen wore long robes and carried folding fans, while the ladies adorned themselves in sparkling jewels.
Pairs of dancers were gracefully performing on the central stage, with the gentlemen being courteous and the ladies exuding elegance.
"Master Ye, tonight's ball is the most famous in Haining. Look at those watching the dance; they are all prominent figures from Shanghai," Gao Fen introduced.
"That young man must be Jiang Ming, right?" I asked, pointing to a middle-aged man.
"Master Ye has a good eye; that is indeed Jiang Ming," Gao Fen praised.
"And that young man in the white long shirt must be Nie Han?" I pointed to another young man.
"Does Master Ye know Mr. He?" Gao Fen asked in surprise.
"I don't know him, I've just heard his name," I shook my head.
"Master Ye, this Mr. He is a well-known talent from Haining. Not only is he knowledgeable, but he is also skilled in business. He graduated from Nanshan Academy and returned home to inherit Honghan Trading Company. He is now the Shopkeeper," Gao Fen introduced.
"Honghan Trading Company? Is it a department store?" I asked.
"Yes, Honghan Trading Company is the largest department store here, with dozens of branches," Gao Fen replied.
"Then who is that other gentleman?" I pointed to a middle-aged man and asked.
"That gentleman is Mr. Chu, a famous lawyer from Shanghai. He has served as a legal advisor for the Foreign Government," Gao Fen explained.
"Master Ye, those ladies over there are well-known young ladies from Haining. The one in the purple qipao is Miss Huang Minyi, and the one in the white evening gown is Miss Qian Wanyi," Gao Fen pointed out several young women.
"Mr. Gao, how do you know so many people here?" I asked curiously.
"Master Ye, after all, I am the Shopkeeper of Wanbang Restaurant and often interact with the elite of Shanghai, so I naturally know these people well," Gao Fen smiled.
"No wonder, Mr. Gao is quite a figure here," I complimented.
"Master Ye flatters me; I'm just a helper, hardly a figure," Gao Fen humbly replied.
"Mr. Gao, who is this Hu Gongzi?" I suddenly pointed to a middle-aged man and asked.
"Master Ye, you don't even know Hu Gongzi?" Gao Fen asked in surprise.
"Why should I know him?" I retorted.
"Master Ye, this Hu Gongzi is a well-known figure in Haining. He is the owner of Qian Tong Bank and a famous philanthropist in Haining. Every year, he gives out porridge on the streets and raises funds for poor children," Gao Fen explained.
"So he's just a hypocrite," I said lightly.
"Master Ye, you can't say that carelessly," Gao Fen said nervously, glancing around before speaking in a low voice.
"Mr. Gao, I was just saying it casually," I smiled and didn't elaborate further.
"Master Ye, Hu Gongzi has arrived. Should we go over and greet him?" Gao Fen asked.
"No need. I'm here to have fun today, not to socialize," I declined Gao Fen's suggestion.
