The light of the crystal softened, and the energy waves gradually calmed down. It seemed we had successfully blocked the counterattack of the protective mechanism.
The three of us exchanged glances, filled with joy and reassurance.
"We did it..."
Before I could finish my sentence, a sudden rumbling sound erupted from within the tower, as if something massive was about to emerge from underground.
"What on earth is that?" Little Jie asked, his voice trembling with fear.
I stared at the shadow slowly rising, feeling an indescribable unease in my heart.
"We need to get out of here quickly!" I shouted, "The secrets hidden behind this city are far more terrifying than we imagined!"
When the shadow finally revealed itself, we saw an enormous face, ancient and terrifying, staring at us with cold eyes like those of the Guardian Deity of this city.
The face emitted a deep and resonant voice: "You intruders dare to disturb the tranquility of this city. Your ignorance has awakened a long-dormant power."
"Now, you will pay a heavy price for your actions."
I felt an invisible pressure, as if time had come to a standstill at that moment.
In this tense atmosphere, I quickly flipped open the diary I had in hand, hoping to find a way to escape.
Gradually, I noticed that the symbols and patterns in the diary resembled my family's crest remarkably well. An unbelievable thought crossed my mind—perhaps the author of the diary, that ancient soul, was one of my ancestors.
As I read more and more, an increasing number of clues confirmed my suspicion. The contents of the diary not only narrated the history of this city but also contained many secrets about my family.
The complex relationships and secrets within were beyond anything I had ever imagined.
In front of the Guardian Deity, I felt as if I had formed a special connection with this place. I could hear my own heartbeat and feel the pulse in my veins, as if there was an indescribable bond between me and this city.
"Hey, what exactly do you see?" The voice of the Guardian Deity buzzed in my ear.
I gritted my teeth and quietly replied, "Um... actually, I'm a descendant of the diary's author. I didn't come to this city to cause destruction; I just want to understand my family's matters and seek the truth."
The Guardian Deity fell silent for a moment before making a decision: "Since you mentioned the past, I will give you a chance."
"If you can pass my test, I will allow you to enter the city and take a look."
"If not, you will have to stay here forever, living and dying with this city."
I tightly gripped the diary, feeling a sense of responsibility and pressure I had never experienced before. Whether we could unravel the mystery of this city and successfully find our way out depended entirely on this moment.
Inside the diary, I unexpectedly discovered a hidden compartment containing an antique talisman. The talisman looked ordinary, but as soon as I touched it, I felt a warm power surge through me, as if it were merging with my very blood.
Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I looked at the Guardian Deity and said loudly, "This is an heirloom from my ancestors, a testament to the deep connection between my family and this city."
The Guardian Deity glanced at the object but replied, "Just having this won't be enough to appease me; you still need to pass the final test."
I nodded firmly, indicating that no matter what the test was, I would face it bravely. A hint of approval flickered in the Guardian Deity's eyes; it seemed we were about to embark on an adventure to seek a mysterious treasure.
