The man clearly heard the excitement in the merchant's eyes at the mention of five hundred taels. Li Rui couldn't understand how his moment of careless talk had led him to this situation.
The merchant's name was Song Hailong, as Li Rui could tell from the badge on his chest. He was extremely shrewd; his current demeanor was calm and composed. "I know you really want this item, but you also want to negotiate the price. However, since I can see your eagerness for the delivery, I won't be as enthusiastic anymore."
It wasn't that he was no longer enthusiastic; rather, he wouldn't treat him with the same fervor as a new customer.
For someone who was ninety percent likely to buy something here, why should he prolong the process?
As long as he could satisfy him by continuously lowering the price, that would be enough.
However, the more composed he appeared, the more uncertain the customer became about whether he could purchase the item. This uncertainty brought about a significant fluctuation in potential pricing.
Ha ha, Song Hailong was feeling quite pleased with his own cleverness.
Li Rui found it amusing that this guy had first approached him with enthusiasm for a handshake and then suddenly turned cold. Now he was standing there with a silly grin—was there something wrong with his head?
Forget it. Since he seemed a bit off today, Li Rui decided to wait and see what would happen next. After all, it wasn't clear when he would come back to ask him to complete a task.
Since there was no urgency, Li Rui could take his time to handle other matters and deal with issues in his life. Seeing Song Hailong looking foolish in front of him didn't warrant any further thought. He turned around and prepared to leave.
Song Hailong was left bewildered. What was going on? Everything had seemed under his control until this unexpected twist occurred.
He felt completely lost, like a monk who couldn't grasp the situation.
"Guest, guest!" Song Hailong didn't care anymore about the situation; he just needed to stabilize him first.
"What?" Li Rui was confused. It was clear that this person had suddenly become cold towards him and then started grinning foolishly. He had already prepared to visit again tomorrow, but who knew if something major had happened at home that caused such a drastic change in his demeanor?
But what was the sudden call about now? Had he adjusted himself immediately?
"Um? What's wrong? Is there anything else?" Li Rui decided to assess the situation first, although his tone was no longer as urgent. Ultimately, after some bargaining, Li Rui obtained the item at a price he was satisfied with.
However, just as he exited the trading market, he encountered Skull. Skull was now confronting him, and his mask had been removed, revealing a stranger's face.
In a moment of panic, Li Rui rolled and hid behind a tavern. The owner was startled by the sudden intrusion, and his daughter Caiyun was terrified by the fierce Skull chasing right behind.
The owner thought his daughter had been killed by Skull and, with red eyes filled with rage, grabbed some oil nearby and threw it.
This frightened Li Rui greatly; the fire spell he intended to unleash was forcibly suppressed, causing internal injuries.
Li Rui's vision darkened, and his body went limp as he muttered, "I'm sorry, brother. It's an emergency; I can only do this."
Caiyun continued to press down on the fire starter with her mud-and-oil-covered hands. Li Rui felt like a knife was cutting through his heart and grew increasingly anxious. In a panic, he got up but stumbled over Skull's leg and fell hard to the ground.
At that moment, Caiyun's vacant eyes began to regain focus as she saw Li Rui's limp body. Suddenly, she sprang up, ignoring the dirt on herself and the fallen Qilin, crying uncontrollably while mumbling something incoherent.
"Ha," Li Rui gasped for breath, finally managing to stop himself. The tavern owner trembled as he crawled out from under the counter, pointing at Li Rui and stuttering, "I-I-I..."
"Enough!"
Li Rui's greatest annoyance was this dazed owner. Knowing Caiyun was in such a fragile state and still giving him oil nearly led to a tragedy.
"What's there to look at? You son of a dog, if it weren't for you, there wouldn't be so much trouble!"
He spat a thick phlegm on the ground, and the boss didn't argue, nodding incessantly, "Yes, yes, yes."
I wanted to smash your head. Just as Qilin thought about doing that, his hand reached far back, and his gaze swept over to Caiyun, who was silently crying. He spat another thick phlegm on the ground, landing right in front of the boss.
He pulled Caiyun up. With his other hand, he crossed over Li Rui's arm and dragged both of them into the house.
After much effort, Li Rui managed to drag the two back inside. He turned around and thought about what was happening; Caiyun clung tightly to Li Rui, refusing to budge, the smell of kerosene on her was suffocating.
Li Rui figured this wasn't a big deal; these days, who didn't have some open flames at home? If they accidentally sparked something, all three would be done for.
"You motherf***er, have you lost your mind? I have to wipe your ass along with your dead wife."
Spitting again, Li Rui turned around and grabbed two ladles from the kitchen, then brought over two old steel basins. With determination, he filled both ladles with water and splashed it all over Li Rui and Caiyun.
"Achoo!"
With a loud sneeze, Skull shivered and turned around to see Caiyun's face again, covered in mud, kerosene, well water, and various disgusting mixtures.
Annoyed, Skull reached out to slap her but ended up getting splashed with another ladle of water.
"Wow!"
"Damn it, that little bastard is messing with me?"
Furious, Skull turned around to see Li Rui, who was made up and holding a water ladle while balancing two steel basins of well water at his feet. "It's you again, you son of a b****!"
He rolled up his sleeves, casually pushed open Caiyun, and prepared to throw a punch. Qilin looked as if he had eaten something terrible, watching Li Rui wake up and go into a frenzy, then swiftly slapped a gourd lid onto Skull's head.
"You son of a bitch, are you still not done? Look at what you've caused; do you want to kill everyone?"
"I don't care; I just want all of you to die with me. I, Skull, will not share the same fate with them!"
Damn it, not sharing the same fate? Li Rui saw that Skull seemed unable to recognize him now. He tossed aside the gourd lid, grabbed two cigarettes from his pocket, and offered one to Skull.
"I don't smoke!"
"I don't want to give it to you anyway!"
Li Rui lit his cigarette and took a deep drag, exhaling a thick smoke ring. He glanced back at Caiyun, his heart racing in shock. Suddenly, he slapped his forehead. "How did I forget about this!"
In a hurry, he extinguished the cigarette, glanced over at Caiyun, and didn't see any sparks. He breathed a sigh of relief but couldn't find a reason to continue, so he sat down cross-legged on the ground.
