Li Rui coldly laughed to himself, thinking that he had managed to get through the night. The crowd scattered like birds and beasts. Only one subordinate named Zhang Dequan was called over by Skull and stayed behind.
Li Rui knew that Skull was going to practice his evil arts again, harming the women from two other families to supplement his own needs.
Zhang Dequan had been waiting in the council hall, and when it was deep into the night, Boss, who was in the inner chamber, stretched lazily, covering his mouth as he yawned, and walked out. Zhang Dequan hurriedly approached, personally taking the fan offered by the servants to fan Boss while tentatively asking, "Boss, which lady are we inviting to your chambers tonight?"
Boss stared at Zhang Dequan for a while, his eyes revealing an inscrutable meaning. Zhang Dequan felt uneasy under that gaze and dared not meet his eyes. Bowing his head deeply, he cautiously said, "A few days ago when I was out, I discovered a beautiful girl in the back streets. She is only eighteen years old; her father just passed away and she is selling herself to save her family. I thought Skull might find her useful, so I bought her. She is currently being held in my residence. Skull, do you want her?"
"Therefore, I dared to think that Boss could..." Boss looked at Zhang Dequan with amusement, causing him to feel a bit anxious. "I have already made my decision for tonight; you should immediately go prepare for Purple Blossom Palace!" Upon hearing this, Zhang Dequan's expression changed dramatically. "Boss, you mustn't!" There were rumors within Ammunition that superiors should not recklessly appear in side chambers and that Boss should not repeatedly summon the same girl. Yet Boss planned to violate all of this. The first time was when Boss forcibly took a girl while procuring materials for Ammunition a few days ago. They had not engaged in anything then, and since the previous Skull had just died and the new Head had just taken office, no one understood his temperament yet; thus no one had advised against it.
Within Ammunition, only the current mistress—rumored to be always present internally—could advise against such actions. Mistress? Zhang Dequan bitterly smiled inwardly; the mistress was too busy dealing with that matter to intervene!
Li Rui returned home and slept soundly. When he woke up the next day, he felt refreshed as if all the gloom from previous days had vanished.
"Ah!"
Stretching widely, he heard a sound coming from outside the door. Listening closely, he realized someone had come to procure for Ammunition!
Li Rui jolted awake and quickly washed up before heading to the main hall to check on the situation. He saw a crowd surrounding a man dressed luxuriously and exuding an extraordinary presence. Li Rui found him familiar but couldn't recall who he was at first glance.
It wasn't until the man turned his head that Li Rui's heart sank in shock; he exclaimed inwardly that it was too late—the man had already seen Li Rui's face. This man was none other than the previous King!
Oh no! What if he calls out to me? If Skull finds out about this, I'm finished! Li Rui felt a bit guilty and intentionally lowered his head.
Boss didn't know what happened last night, but he seemed to be glowing with radiance. Li Rui was still feeling anxious and had no extra time or energy to ponder why King was so respectful towards Head. It was as if a subordinate was meeting a Superior.
Today, King's attire was even more luxurious. Sitting in the main seat, Head noticed King entering and a flash of joy crossed his eyes. However, he still restrained his excitement. Beside him was a silver basin, in which floated the dragon-scaled fish that Li Rui had seen caught last night.
Behind him stood two palace maids holding fans, their bright yellow Robe embroidered with patterns of dragons soaring through the vast sea. The corners of their robes billowed with golden waves, and the sleeves fluttered high in the wind. Their long brows were slightly raised, and their ink-black eyes sparkled with warm light. Their handsome faces glowed in the morning light, exuding a divine majesty and innate nobility, radiating an aura of a king. The evil yet handsome face wore a hint of a carefree smile.
His complexion was fair, his features delicate yet handsome, combining charm with a touch of gentleness. The aura he emanated was complex, like a blend of various qualities, but within that gentleness and charm lay his unique ethereal grace and elegance.
With a high nose, thin lips, and sword-like eyebrows that slanted into a few strands of black hair at his temples, his handsome profile had perfectly impeccable contours.
Feeling restless, Li Rui could hardly sit still and wanted to leave this place for a while. Thus, he spent the entire morning deliberately avoiding King.
After finally managing to slip away, Li Rui casually asked a servant and learned that today was the Mid-Autumn Festival, which was also the banquet ordered by the mysterious mistress behind Boss.
"No wonder this King is here. So today is the Mid-Autumn Festival!"
The fragrance of Osmanthus wafted for miles as the bright moon rose high in the sky. The residence was adorned with lanterns and decorations everywhere. From afar, one could hear laughter and joy echoing from all directions. However, Li Rui felt only coldness. In this vast residence with hundreds of people, perhaps due to his own reasons and having treated the servants generously since arriving at Ammunition, there were many who cared for him. Yet here, there were too many rules and clear hierarchies; even if those below wanted to show concern, they couldn't approach to greet him freely. They could only cautiously inquire about their master while being careful not to overstep their bounds or disrupt the established order.
Li Rui looked up at the cold Full Moon, then down at the Lantian Jade Pendant in his hand. The Mooncake on the table echoed with the nearby Full Moon, but all he saw was a diligent servant standing beside him.
Summer evenings were always enchanting; the cicadas chirped softly while the heat waves diminished significantly.
Wondering if there were any watermelons, Li Rui rested his chin on his hands and swayed his head from side to side. A bright moon hung high in the sky, casting silver light from the windows. "What bright stars!" Everything here appeared natural—the dance halls and song stages filled with an atmosphere steeped in Chinese culture wafted through every corner of the world.
Li Rui looked at the stars above, twinkling and shimmering. The evenings of his past life did not have such beauty; they were long polluted by endless development and construction, leaving the land scarred and the air filled with dust.
This is the nature of gain and loss; for everything gained, something must be lost. What will he gain, and what will he lose?
