The boy didn't look much like a student; he was somewhat... unattractive. Although one shouldn't judge by appearances, it was clear he wasn't good-looking.
Rao Jie asked him about his girlfriend. The boy replied that his girlfriend had class, so he came to show Rao Jie the apartment. If she liked it, they could immediately share the rent, which was paid monthly.
Rao Jie followed the boy, asking detailed questions about the shared living arrangements. She casually inquired if he lived here with his girlfriend. The boy suddenly became vague about this, which made Rao Jie feel uneasy.
She pressed him further about what major his girlfriend was studying and what year she was in. The boy casually mentioned a name that happened to be the same as Rao Jie's major. However, she had no recollection of this girl’s name, but she was certain that they had no classes at this time.
Rao Jie’s confusion deepened. She couldn't help but check her phone, only to realize it had run out of battery without her noticing.
By this time, they had arrived at the entrance of the tenth-floor apartment. Rao Jie felt a bit anxious as the boy opened the door and invited her inside. However, she stood at the threshold and suddenly requested to call his girlfriend.
The boy's expression changed slightly as he explained again and hurriedly urged Rao Jie to come in. But Rao Jie noticed a man's leg moving in the corner of the room.
There were other men in the apartment?
Rao Jie’s face changed instantly; without saying a word, she turned and ran. The two men inside quickly reacted and chased after her.
Rao Jie was momentarily stunned; her body reacted faster than her mind. Her first instinct was to press the elevator button, but there wasn't enough time. She turned and dashed down the emergency staircase instead.
Since she was running down the stairs, the two men couldn't catch up to her right away, but their heavy footsteps made her feel close to collapsing.
"Stop!"
"Stop!"
Their shouts sounded like death knells, pushing Rao Jie to run even faster as if she were using every ounce of her strength to escape.
Fortunately for her, she managed to reach the ground floor without being caught and didn’t trip despite her speed. When she burst out of the emergency exit, she expected to find someone to help her, but there wasn’t a soul on the first floor.
The voices of the two men were already fading behind her.
Rao Jie felt that any second now, someone might grab her by her clothes or hair.
That terror made her scalp tingle as she desperately rushed toward the main entrance.
At that moment, the door suddenly swung open from the outside, and sunlight poured in like a beam of redemptive light. In that dazzling brightness stood a figure.
As soon as Rao Jie saw someone enter, her heart soared. She didn't have time to stop; without clearly seeing the person, she crashed into their arms with such force that the person staggered back several steps before regaining their balance against her momentum.
Rao Jie trembled all over, her small face pale. "Help me, help me, those two people are bad guys!"
"You're really an idiot!"
A cold and sarcastic voice rang in her ears, sounding familiar.
Rao Jie looked up and was instantly stunned; the person was... Wu Rong!
Wu Rong did not look down at Rao Jie in his arms but maintained his one-handed grip on her due to inertia. When he saw a man rushing towards them, he swiftly raised his long leg and kicked, sending one of the men crashing to the ground.
"Scum!"
"You little brat, playing the hero to save the damsel in distress? I think you're tired of living!"
