Hua Man Lou looked at the Lin Family Ancestral Tomb and said, "The mountain is ugly, and the water comes from Yichan. The water mouth is in Qian Hai: Xin Xu Qian Hai Renzi, born in Bing Wu, prosperous in Gen Yin, the tomb is in Xin Xu. This is the Yang Gong's Twelve Long Life Water Method. The Feng Shui Master hired by the Lin family was very skilled to point out such an excellent dragon vein."
Bai Tang nodded in agreement.
Lu Feng asked, "Since this spot is good and has not been disturbed, why has the Lin family repeatedly encountered strange disasters?"
Bai Tang asked Lin Zhuoyan, "Has the Zheng Family made any moves recently?"
"The Zheng Family renovated their Ancestral Grave some time ago!" Lin Zhuoyan frowned, "It seems that Xue Tao started getting sick around that time."
Bai Tang said, "Let's go check the Zheng Family Ancestral Tomb!"
The Zheng Family Ancestral Tomb was located to the south of the platform, with a square-shaped tomb. What was peculiar about this tomb was that it had both a head and a tail, and there were four giant stones standing at the front and back, resembling the four legs of a giant beast. The four stones appeared very new, showing no signs of weathering, indicating they had been built recently.
Bai Tang slightly furrowed her brows.
"Tang Tang, do you see something?" Hua Man Lou noticed Bai Tang's subtle change in expression.
Bai Tang nodded, "It is indeed related to the Zheng Family. As for how it is related, we will come back at midnight; I will show you some interesting things."
Lu Feng was full of curiosity: "What is it? Can't we see it now?"
Bai Tang replied, "The yang energy is strong now; what I can see, you cannot. Let's wait until tonight!"
So Lu Feng waited anxiously until the moon rose high in the sky. The group ascended the mountain again. The Cold Moon hung in the air, and the moonlight was like water, making the mountains appear even more desolate. Except for the Lin Family Patriarch, the other four were indifferent to the cold of the night. Hua Man Lou led Lin Zhuoyan using Lightness Skill to quickly reach their destination.
Bai Tang instructed the other four to step aside, bent down to pick up three stones, and arranged them in a "品" shape between the Lin and Zheng tombs to create a tripod stance. Then she bowed her head and silently blessed a few words before pointing at the Lin family tomb and shouted, "Manifest quickly in form; retreat quickly in spirit!"
As soon as she finished speaking, the giant stones on either side of the Lin family tomb emitted light like burning candles. Suddenly, a cloud of pale gray smoke rose from below. The gray mist thickened, and a gust of cold wind blew up from below, wrapping around the Zheng Family tomb until it became completely obscured by a gray haze.
At that moment, a mass of black mist emerged from the Zheng Family tomb. The black mist dispersed the gray mist and soared upward, threateningly enveloping the Lin family tomb. The light emitted by the giant stones on either side of the Lin family tomb grew dimmer until it was completely extinguished by the black mist...
Lu Feng and his companions were stunned by these two strange mists. Lu Feng leaned closer to Bai Tang and asked, "Tang Tang, what are those two mists—gray and black?"
"Those are the Feng Shui energies contained within each grave," Bai Tang explained. "The four giant stones built around the Zheng Family grave are shaped to resemble an otter. In contrast, the Lin family's tomb is structured as a Carp Cave with its gravestone as its eye. Otters primarily eat carp; thus, the Lin family's Carp Cave is suppressed by the Zheng Family's Otter Den. Although light emanates from the stone eye of the Carp Cave, it cannot withstand the black mist from Zheng Family's Otter Den and gets completely engulfed—how could they not repeatedly encounter strange disasters?"
Feng Shui The Carp Cave and Otter Den are both formations that the Feng Shui Master has shaped according to the energy of the land. Although they have names, they actually reflect the inherent energy of the locations themselves. Once the energy is established, consequences arise, and these vary depending on the nature of the energy. Therefore, Feng Shui masters often place great importance on the terrain of the site.
“Carp Cave? Otter Den?” Hua Man Lou asked, “Did the Zheng Family renovate their Ancestral Grave recently to create this Otter Den to counteract the Carp Cave?”
Bai Tang nodded: “The Zheng Family hired a High Master to change the shadows and shapes to counteract the Lin Family Ancestral Tomb.”
“The Zheng Family has such malicious intentions!” Lin Zhuoyan exclaimed in shock and anger, turning to Bai Tang. “Bai Gu Niang, is there any way to break this?”
Bai Tang slowly shook her head: “Although I can see through the energy of both locations, I cannot think of a solution right now. This is because the energy of a site generally follows its natural shape; forcing changes can sometimes be not only unhelpful but also harmful!”
“Then what can we do to resolve the Lin family's crisis?” Lu Feng asked. After encountering two streams of smoke, he began to believe in Feng Shui. “What if we change the Lin family's strategy to counteract the Zheng Family?”
Bai Tang sighed: “The tombs of the Lin and Zheng families are positioned opposite each other, with their energies having accumulated over hundreds of years from the mountains and waters. Now that the Zheng Family is secretly changing shadows and shapes, they are merely following their energy patterns, triggering the dragon's energy to counteract the Lin family's Carp Cave. The energy of the Lin family's Carp Cave has already been activated but is being suppressed by the Otter. Thus, no matter how we try to stimulate that energy, it cannot overcome the power of the Otter. This leaves me feeling quite helpless!”
“If we can't think of anything right now, let's go back and rest. We can think again after we've rested! It's already four in the morning!” Hua Man Lou said kindly. “If it really doesn't work out, we can just move the Lin Family Ancestral Tomb and find another good Feng Shui site!”
The nearby Feng Shui dragon sites are not as good as these two! Bai Tang thought but did not voice it as she followed everyone down the mountain.
At this time, it was nearly five in the morning; soon it would be light. The servants brought each of the five a bowl of warm rice porridge. After eating, they each returned to their rooms to rest. However, Lin Zhuoyan, troubled by her thoughts, could not sleep well and woke up after just an hour. She then went to check on her son in Lin Xue Tao's courtyard. Lin Xue Tao was already awake, drinking porridge with a maid's help, looking better than he had yesterday. This filled Lin Zhuoyan with joy and strengthened her confidence in Bai Tang, believing she could definitely help the Lin family out of their predicament.
The four of them slept until mid-morning before getting up. After washing up, Lin Zhuoyan invited them all to eat at the Flower Hall. The meal was not as lavish as yesterday's; following Bai Tang's request, there was only a plate of fish and a lotus leaf chicken along with some refreshing side dishes and two plates of exquisite snacks. However, the wine was excellent—thirty-year-old Daughter's Red, which made Lu Feng, who loved wine, beam with delight as he drank nearly half a jar while holding a chicken leg in one hand.
“Tang Tang, have you thought of a solution?” Lu Feng lazily asked.
Hua Man Lou shot him a glance: “Tang Tang just got up; how could she come up with a solution so quickly?”
He picked up a piece of fish and placed it in Bai Tang's bowl: “Have some fish! The chef at the Lin family is skilled at cooking fish; this braised Carp is quite good!”
“Braised Carp?” Upon hearing this, Bai Tang paused for a moment before her eyes lit up.
“What? Did you come up with an idea?” Lu Feng put down his wine cup and leaned closer to ask.
Bai Tang smiled without answering directly but instead asked: “Do you know where Carp and Otter come from?”
Knowing that Bai Tang wouldn't speak without reason, and realizing she might have found a solution, a smile crept onto Hua Man Lou's face as he replied: “According to records from over a thousand years ago, a fisherman discovered a long-whiskered fish by the banks of the Jialing River. He caught four of them but found them strange-looking and didn’t dare eat them; instead, he placed them in his pond. Over time, these fish multiplied into thousands. When disaster struck at the river, flooding broke through his pond’s dam, causing these fish to scatter everywhere and reproduce across various regions. Henceforth, they were called Carp. It is believed that they originated from the Jialing River, including varieties such as mirror carp with smooth skin and flesh, grass carp with green skin and no scales, pouch carp with short bodies and large heads, and red carp with bright colors… The Otter, on the other hand, comes from the Bay of the North Sea. It is semi-terrestrial and semi-aquatic; its eyes and ears are relatively round. Its limbs are short with long claws that are slightly sharp; its claws are large and prominent at their tips. Its hind feet have webbing between its toes. The tail is long and flat at its base but gradually tapers towards its end, often exceeding half its body length. Its fur is long and dense, appearing brown or coffee-colored with a silky sheen; people regard it as fine fur clothing. They mostly hunt at night for fish, especially known for preying on Carp, making them one of its greatest natural enemies.”
Bai Tang smiled and praised, "Seven Children is indeed knowledgeable. If the Otter originates from the Bay of the North Sea, does that mean its nature becomes more spiritual the further north it goes?"
Hua Man Lou nodded and said, "According to its origin, there is such a method. Tang Tang, have you thought of a solution?"
Bai Tang nodded and smiled, "Exactly! Although the Otter initially conflicts with the Carp, just as the Otter's spirituality increases the further north it goes, if we change its Five Elements direction, we can immediately eliminate its killing intent and turn the Carp Cave's misfortune into fortune."
After dinner, Bai Tang went up the mountain accompanied by Lu Feng and Hua Man Lou. Upon returning, he immediately went to find Lin Zhuoyan. The four of them conspired in the study, and Lin Zhuoyan called a few loyal servants to the study. Bai Tang spread out Hua Man Lou's hand-drawn diagram of the northern dragon vein and carefully explained it to the servants. That night, several servants quietly arrived at the Lin Family Ancestral Tomb, armed with iron shovels and spades, and began digging.
Lin Xue Tao was getting better day by day. At Hua Man Lou's request, Bai Tang helped Mrs. Lin treat her broken leg. With the help of the Healing Device, Mrs. Lin, who would have become lame, would be able to walk like a normal person after just over a month of recovery—Bai Tang could have made Mrs. Lin stand up and walk immediately, but to avoid causing too much of a stir, he decided to let Mrs. Lin take her time.
Not long after that night's operation, news of Zheng Xuanhe's sudden death came through, leaving Lin Xue Tao and Lin Zhuoyan stunned.
Lin Zhuoyan asked, "Bai Gu Niang, how did Zheng Xuanhe suddenly die?"
Bai Tang replied, "The Zheng Family is poor despite their Ancestral Grave's dragon energy being prosperous. However, Zheng Xuanhe was cruel and ruthless, having taken many innocent lives; retribution is hard to avoid."
From what the servants learned, Zheng Xuanhe had his eyes on a piece of land outside the town and wanted to requisition it to build a villa. He forcibly tried to purchase it from its original owner. When the original owner refused, Zheng Xuanhe ordered a fire set that burned those villagers alive. He thought these villagers were just ordinary people and didn't pay much attention; little did he know that one woman among them was actually the wife of a certain martial artist and she had just become pregnant. As a result, Zheng Xuanhe not only killed the martial artist's wife but also their unborn child. The martial artist exploded with rage.
