Skiing is a popular sport in the northern regions and is often associated with the wealthy. Many affluent individuals consider skiing in Switzerland as a form of enjoyment and fashion. Skiing has also become a competitive sport, featured in the Olympics. However, Bai Tang and her companions are neither from the north nor wealthy, nor are they athletes, so they do not ski. They have only rudimentary equipment, mimicking what they see on television. When Tang Minglang puts on his skis, he stumbles with every step; fortunately, the soft snow prevents him from getting hurt badly. The other three are not much better off, but they are agile and, after a few falls, manage to find their balance, reducing their tumbles and increasing their speed, able to dodge or navigate around obstacles. After practicing for a while, the four of them feel confident enough in their skiing skills to set off.
Tang Minglang secures Tang Yun with a strap across his chest and pulls his sunglasses down over his eyes. "Let's go!"
"Let's go!" Bai Tang replies with a smile.
All four of them wear Warm Jade, which shields them from most of the cold. They move quickly across the snowy ground, skillfully avoiding obstacles. The snow on the ground is over a meter thick, trapping all the zombies beneath it. Only their upper bodies are visible above the snow, rendering them slow to react and move. At this point, even a child could kill a zombie by hitting its head with a stone. As they make their way forward, they casually eliminate any frozen zombies they encounter; by the time they reach their destination, they have killed at least nine thousand zombies. They do not need to take detours; their speed on skis surpasses that of traveling by car. After seven hours, they finally enter S Province.
Upon entering S Province, Tang Minglang separates from the other three. Although S Province has established a Survivor Base, many hidden families and sects prefer to stay in their own territories rather than at the base. The people from the Dongshan Sect are no different; Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran naturally return to Dongshan Sect while Bai Tang wants to check on her home first. If she cannot find her parents there, she will go to the Survivor Base to look for them. After all, she does not believe anything has happened to them.
City D is not as severely damaged as other cities; only about a quarter of its population has turned into zombies due to its superior geographical conditions. The mountains and waters of City D are excellent, contributing to better physical health among its residents compared to those in other cities. Several national-level heavy industries have established themselves in City D. When these industries were being set up decades ago, experts from the former Soviet Union surveyed many locations across the country before deciding on City D, recognizing its geological and environmental advantages that would mitigate concerns about natural disasters like floods or earthquakes. These experts lived up to their reputation—unlike today's so-called "experts," who lack both character and knowledge compared to those from decades ago—City D has enjoyed favorable weather conditions over the years, with air quality ranking among the top ten cities in the country. A major earthquake that struck S Province a few years ago caused minimal damage to City D, affecting only a few buildings and resulting in only minor injuries among residents who managed to escape without serious harm.
Thus, relatively undamaged City D is considered an excellent place for survival. The government has even established a Survivor Base there—there are military forces stationed in the mountains surrounding City D, providing adequate defense capabilities. Taking advantage of the snowfall, the military cleared all zombies from within City D and constructed tall walls around the urban area. Due to extreme cold, only part of the wall was built; however, all major roads leading into City D are controlled by the military. Anyone wishing to enter must register and undergo body searches for injuries before being allowed entry after observing for twelve hours. Such measures ensure the safety of those inside the base; however, Bai Tang cannot wait that long and sneaks into the city after dark—since Dongshan Sect is not located within the city limits, Yuan Mingyi and Tian Yanran do not need to enter.
The area at the center of City D has been completely cleared of zombies; however, bloodstains and remnants of flesh remain on the ground and walls, emitting an unpleasant odor. At this moment, no one has the energy or inclination to clean up these traces.
Standing in front of her home’s door, Bai Tang takes deep breaths repeatedly. Although she believes her parents are safe, she feels anxious and uncertain. Now that she stands at her doorstep, she lacks the courage to open it. She fears seeing something inside that does not match her hopes. Hesitantly placing her hands on the door panel and handle, Bai Tang encourages herself.
"It’s okay; Dad and Mom must be fine! Once I open this door, I can see them!"
Suddenly, the door swings open from inside, revealing Wu Xuemei holding a garbage bag who looks astonished at seeing Bai Tang. Then she joyfully exclaims: "Dad! Mom! Tang Tang is back! Tang Tang is safe!"
All that could be heard was the sound of hurried footsteps in the room. The next moment, Bai Dad and Bai Mom appeared in Bai Tang's line of sight. The two elders looked much haggard, but overall there was not much change.
“Dad, Mom, I’m back!” Seeing her parents safe, Bai Tang felt a weight lift off her chest and smiled happily.
“It's good that you're back!” Bai Mom couldn't help but let tears roll down her cheeks. When the apocalypse suddenly struck, their family had managed to hide in the house and avoid harm from the monsters, but their daughter had been outside, facing those man-eating creatures. Although their daughter was quite capable, there were so many zombies; what if she got hurt? Would she also become one of those monsters? Bai Dad and Bai Mom were worried. For over a month, the elderly couple had been thinking about their daughter, unable to eat or sleep well, and they had lost a lot of weight.
“Dad, Mom, let’s go inside and talk. We shouldn’t stand here in the cold!” Wu Xuemei quickly reminded them. The temperature outside was below minus twenty degrees; even breathing would turn into ice. It was better to hurry back inside to avoid getting sick.
“Yes, let’s get inside quickly!” Bai Mom hurriedly pulled her daughter into the house and carefully examined her. Seeing that her daughter was only slightly fatigued and had no injuries, Bai Mom finally felt relieved.
“Auntie!” Two Shota boys ran over, and Bai Tang hugged them, one in each arm. The two children had been well taken care of by the adults and were wearing Warm Jade, so they had not been affected by the cold!
“I’m so happy to see that you’re all okay!”
