The last time Bai Tang visited Kyoto, she explored all the famous historical sites and tourist attractions. This time, she only went to Wangfujing shopping mall to buy gifts for her family and took the opportunity to see Zhang Feng, who exploited her into buying a set of Tang Sancai. After that, she purchased a ticket to Magic City. Yuanhang convened a Shareholders Meeting to report the earnings after the launch of the Holographic Game, and Ma Congyun insisted that Bai Tang must attend.
At the airport, Bai Tang encountered Ye Xiang. The two exchanged a few casual words. Ye Xiang was returning to City D this time; it had been more than half a year since Mo Xinyu's incident, and he had emerged from his sadness and despair. He often recalled Bai Tang's accusations, and his guilt towards his parents continued to grow. With love gone, should he also give up on familial affection? Did he really want to regret because "a child wishes to support their parents but they are no longer there"? Ye Xiang did not want to live with regret and finally made the decision to abandon his rising career in the capital to return home and accompany his aging parents. After spending three months training newcomers and handing over his responsibilities, Ye Xiang left the company. He might never return to Kyoto again; he bid farewell to all his friends there and dealt with various matters related to his departure until today when he finally boarded the plane back home.
"Thank you, and I'm sorry!" Ye Xiang said sincerely to Bai Tang before leaving.
Bai Tang stayed in Magic City for a week. Aside from attending meetings, she spent her remaining time playing as an NPC with the staff in the game, teasing players and having a great time. Eventually, Ma Congyun could no longer tolerate the countless complaints from players and kicked her out of the company.
This year's summer arrived unusually early and was exceptionally hot; by around eleven o'clock, the sun was so intense it felt like it could melt someone. Bai Tang thought about the history of Ancient Earth she had seen in Future World: Earth gradually deviated from its previous orbit, its magnetic field changed successively, making human life increasingly difficult until they abandoned their homeland in search of new living environments in space.
Was this a sign that the apocalypse was approaching? Bai Tang wondered as she gazed at the glaring sun in the sky. Suddenly, she noticed a black dot appearing before the sun, growing larger as if something were about to fall.
A tremor shook the ground; suddenly everything went dark, plunging the world into darkness. Sounds of brakes screeching, collisions, and screams filled human ears, amplifying their fear!
"Is it an earthquake?" someone asked anxiously.
Bai Tang knew it wasn't an earthquake; it was that black dot colliding with Earth, knocking it off its orbit. Perhaps the apocalypse had truly begun!
Suddenly, an eerie red light erupted from within the darkness, growing brighter and spreading wider. In an instant, the ground was filled with red light. As it fell upon people, one by one they fainted. In just a moment, Bai Tang was the only one still awake in the entire world. However, she was not unaffected; she heard a voice from the system.
"Warning! Warning! Affected by unknown substances; system infection detected; imminent restart. During restart phase, all functions except for backpack will be disabled."
Fortunately, she had kept her backpack; Bai Tang breathed a sigh of relief but soon felt anxious again. Everyone had fainted—would they become cannibalistic monsters like those described in stories once they woke up? What about her parents? What would happen to them? Bai Tang panicked; she wasn't worried that her parents would turn into monsters—she had conditioned their bodies to be stronger than those of young people—but she feared they might be harmed by monsters unexpectedly.
I must hurry back home! Bai Tang couldn't help but complain to herself, wondering why she was so playful. If she had returned home earlier to accompany her parents, she could have been there to protect them at this moment.
An Audi Q5 was parked by the roadside, with only a young man in his twenties inside. Bai Tang pulled the young man out of the car and dragged him toward the office of Yuanhang. Everyone in the office was unconscious, their faces flushed and burning with fever, just like the young man. The symptoms were increasingly resembling those described—an asteroid striking Earth, bringing an unknown virus from the cosmos, causing humans to suffer from radiation infections that turned some into zombies while others barely survived as ordinary people. Only a lucky few activated their extraordinary abilities.
As Bai Tang pondered these thoughts, she opened a bottle of purified water and dropped in three Peiyuan Pills. The game store had also closed, and Bai Tang only had two bottles containing a total of twenty Peiyuan Pills left, which needed to be conserved. Who knew when an emergency would arise that required using the Peiyuan Pills? Once the pills dissolved in the water, Bai Tang poured it into cups and fed everyone in the company and the owner of the Audi Q5 a cup of the enhanced water. The effect was quick; their fevers began to subside. Bai Tang walked into Ma Congyun's office, where Ma Congyun, Chu Donglai, and Ling Xin were gathered together discussing matters.
Bai Tang took a box of instant noodles (fifty packets per box) from her backpack and placed it beside Ling Xin, along with a pile of high-calorie snacks. These were all items that Bai Ma had bought during a clearance sale at Meihui Supermarket before moving. Bai Tang felt they were just taking up space in her bag but didn’t expect to use them now. She lowered her head and softly said "sorry" to the three of them; this was all she could do for them. She couldn’t stay to help; they would have to face any future dangers on their own.
After leaving Ma Congyun's office, Bai Tang returned to the owner of the Audi Q5. She took out a handgun and three magazines from her backpack and placed them in the young man's coat pocket—don’t ask where the gun came from; with Bai Tang's connections, how could she not get hold of one? (Actually, she borrowed it from Ou Haosheng.)
"I'll take your car and compensate you with this gun!" After saying that, Bai Tang left Yuanhang without hesitation and locked the front door with a steel chain. The door was made of bulletproof glass, sturdy enough to withstand certain impacts.
No one had awakened yet; even with the Audi Q5's doors wide open, no one attempted to drive away. Bai Tang got into the car and checked—it had a full tank of gas, but it wouldn’t be enough to drive back from Magic City to City D. Bai Tang hoped that the system would restart soon; whether it was Sword Control or Godly Movement, as long as one worked, it would be fine!
The navigation system was down; Bai Tang could only drive while looking for a gas station. Fortunately, her instincts were sharp enough to see road conditions and signs clearly as she followed the directions toward the outskirts of the city. Unfortunately, the road conditions were terrible due to sudden darkness and fainting incidents; many cars had collided together, resulting in a series of accidents with numerous injuries and a strong smell of blood. Bai Tang didn’t have time to worry about these injured people; she needed to leave densely populated Magic City as quickly as possible. She noticed that many unconscious individuals had gone from flushed red faces to pale gray skin; their fingers were starting to turn into claws! This was a precursor to becoming zombies! Bai Tang's complexion also turned pale; while seeing zombies might seem thrilling in fiction, if it became reality, it would be terrifying. Moreover, now that the system was malfunctioning due to cosmic energy brought by the asteroid strike, her skills were unusable; her abilities at the Divine Transformation stage couldn’t be activated either. Aside from her backpack, her physical strength was slightly above average—her speed was faster than ordinary people’s, her power greater than theirs—but combined together wasn’t enough for comfort—killing one or two zombies might be manageable, but if dozens or hundreds came at her all at once, she would be overwhelmed!
After some time, Bai Tang still hadn’t made it out of the city; those who had fainted began waking up one after another, leading to various tragedies and calamities.
Zombies! This product of film and television had appeared in real life; how many families had been torn apart because of them? How many unsuspecting individuals became food for zombies or joined their ranks?
The people at Yuanhang were awakened by piercing screams. Ling Xin and Ma Congyun emerged from their room: "What happened?"
"Monsters! Monsters!" The receptionist pointed at the glass door while crying out.
Everyone turned to look at the entrance, where they saw a humanoid monster with a pale face, fangs, and claws, drooling as it continuously slammed against the Main Gate. Fortunately, the Main Gate and the iron locks on it were very sturdy; the monster could not break through and was unable to enter. Everyone inside silently thanked whoever had locked the Main Gate. If it hadn't been locked, the monster would have charged in and devoured them as if they were mere food.
"Zombie!?" Chu Donglai gasped. "Why is there a Zombie in reality?"
"Quick, come to the window!" Yu Da shouted.
Everyone rushed to the window, and at that moment, the darkness had passed, revealing the chaotic scene below. The street was in disarray, with monsters rampaging about. Living people screamed and cried as they ran, chased by the monsters. Although Zombies moved clumsily and slowly, their numbers were overwhelming. Terrified humans surrounded by several Zombies were quickly devoured.
"Ugh—" Seeing a Zombie pull out a piece of intestine to feed itself, Ling Xin and several female employees all vomited. Fortunately, they had turned to vomit outside the window, leaving the office clean. The male colleagues all looked pale, their faces barely better than that of the Zombies.
"Is this the end of the world?" Yu asked weakly.
"It's an obvious fact!" Ma Congyun said with a serious expression, once again lamenting his previous mockery. Just when his company was on the brink of bankruptcy and finally started to revive, now the apocalypse had come! Damn it, was this some kind of game with him?
Bang! Bang! Bang! The sound of banging on the door felt like it was hitting everyone’s hearts, making them jump in fear.
"What do we do? If it keeps banging like this, the door might be broken open, and we won't be safe then," Chu Donglai said as he walked up to the Main Gate. The Zombie outside saw Chu Donglai and became even more excited, slamming against the door with increased force.
